Mangaluru, Apr 16: Scores of social activists, students, professionals and other concerned citizens gathered near DC's office here on Monday April 16 to participate in the candlelight vigil held to condemn the incidents of rape and other crimes against women, especially the Kathua, Unnao and Surat cases.

The candlelight vigil was symbolically launched by Kusumavathi and Chandappa, parents of Sowjanya who was raped and murdered in Beltangady in 2012.

Addressing the gathering, renowned rationalist Narendra Nayak said, "The rape and brutal murder of an 8-year-old at Kathua is a shameful act and a blemish on our country. We should not be silent about it anymore and stand against it. When a girl gets raped, her dress and behavior are questioned, and they say those are invitation to rape. If modern dressing provokes you, what about rapes and murders of women in burkha and saree?

"First and foremost, a son should be taught to respect women and not treat them as objects. He should be taught to treat men and women equally. Five years ago, Sowjanya was raped and murdered in Dharmasthala, but still justice has not been done. Mindset towards women needs to change. We should never hesitate when it comes to raising our voice. When thousands of voices are raised, there will be a sense of fear among guilty politicians and perverts," he said.

Sowjanya's mother said, "Five years ago my daughter was brutally raped and killed, even today I am fighting for justice and I will continue until I get justice. I do not have any affiliation to any party, religion, caste - for me all are equal. I request you to support me and stand with me."

Mohammed Kunhi said, "Our country is famous and respected globally for its culture, tradition and values. It is unfortunate that today our country has been recognized for rapes and murders, which is a tragedy. It is horrifying to see how these rapists are being shielded by some holding the national flag. We should persistently protest and get these rapists strict punishment and make the law even stricter."

Among those present were social activists Vidya Dinker, Suhail Kandak and others.

    Dear Mangalorions;

We are sad about the issue, let us think about past incidents happened in our district within the premises of famous colleges and schools.
It is better and most important to think for the future of our children.
Let us see our surroundings, Baby care, LKG, UKG Schools, Tuition institutes are opening and working in residential premises and private homes. These all are beyond the rules and regulations. BEO"s are least bother about this. They will permit and even issue licenses by bypassing the rules and regulations. There are several such schools and institutions in our city working by the grace of our great corrupt government officers, there are cases like permission granted on record for one village and the school locates at another village inside a small house , and studding more than 60 students in 650 sq ft. house building . we the general publics are too supporting these schools by sending our lovely children to these schools and lately crying upon the issues.
    How great we are ??????

Go out from Mainstream paid media and check in the internet & some small news websites about the truth of the Kathua incident before coming to any conclusion... look at all the events..properly planned to defame India....to defame Hinduism.... its very sad that people blindly believe whats shown in some leading paid media by the prestitutes.... no newspaper or media is bothered to check the reality themselves...

Most heinous crime against humanity. But the reponse from the so called right wingers is far worser. Threats to the lawyer, calling her anti Hindu?

Dear citizens " each one of us by our silence and support to the right wingers" we become culpable .
Hitler too was charismatic. He was a good orator. His ability to mesmarize ( under his modi) entire German society to to think Jews were the reason for their woes.
What right wingers are are doing exactly the same. Love jihad , conversions etc.

Our silence emboldens them. Let's stand up and say enough is enough.

Untill and unless all the rapists are hanged I don't think the incidents of rapes will come down.Worldwide Hindustan is being referred as' Rapistsn ' making us to bow our head in shame.Perhaps ours is the only country in the world where laws are still lenient towards rapists .On top of that rapists are shielded by politicians. It is time for the central government to bring in the strict legislation towards punishing the rapists within a short period otherwise we can only expect the worst.

Nice to see people from all walks of life to have joined for a noble cause. Now it is high time we show the same zeal in standing up to the moral policing elements in our peace loving Kudla. I bet they will think twice before venturing into any unwanted activity.

It is true that in this modern world where we live, everyone is influenced by money, power, fashion, dress, education and a job to live in. Here and there we could also hear a separate group of people who try to play crime on women. children and elderly people. This is due to lack of proper guidance given to a child by his parents, and also surroundings where he live in. For every crime we could also see a group of lawyers who fight for such criminals for money ignoring the pain experienced by the victim. Our LAW and the Court also takes years to give proper justice and punishment to them. Lack of severe punishment like we see in Gulf countries should be adopted here also for crimes like rape and murders. Then only we could have a respectful living with good faith in everyone in this society.... Govt should give priority for severe punishment with short period of time to the criminals....
Awarness and a protest is also makes this society safe...

@JK southkanara, only here and there rape cases? As you say awareness and protest makes the soceity safe?It should have long back done .Instead its only increasing due to political background ,money and lack of harder punishment .WHo got till now a harder punishment?Only going around with candles and protesting doesnt make any difference. Each one rape is too much. How many women ,small girls ,died and how many have to die.Politic must atlast wake up and quick and harder punishment only will make a future raper to be bit afraid. In North these poor dalit girls are looked upon down and raped, killed ,hang in public. Is it with protest gone down?why does Modi do Swatch Bharat but doesnt do any hard punishment till now?It is not to sweep roads but sweep off these rapers off the line.Give back the respect to our girls and women what they deserve.
