Bengaluru: New financial year shock - liquor prices to go up by 8% from April 1

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Mar 30: At a time when the state is grappling with extremely hot temperature and dust kicked up by the forthcoming election, liquor prices have been suddenly jacked up from Sunday April 1 onward. The prices have shot up by eight percent, a development that has come as a shock to people who love to consume liquor on a regular basis.

The price hike is necessitated as per the increase in rate of duty announced in the state budget this year. The excise department is making preparations for the release of the list of revised rates. Probably the list might be out on Saturday or Monday in view of intervening holidays. As announced earlier, eight percent excise duty will be increased for the slabs from 2 to 18. Along with basic duty new additional duty will be added to all the types of liquor like Indian Made Foreign Liquor, Beer, Indian Made Liquor etc.

Additional commissioner in excise department, S L Rajendra Prasad, clarified that the increase in prices being brought into fore from April 1 does not get affected because of model code of conduct. Karnataka State Liquor Merchants Association chief secretary, Govindraj Hegde, said that till the new prices are printed on the bottles, liquor would be sold by adding duty to the currently printed prices.

It is bad news for the daily wage earning drunk people. They drink 90 to 250 ml daily whether price is Rs. 50/ or Rs.350/-. They take remaining amount to their house. The car is not running without petrol. so, these people can not live without drinking liquor. Poor wife and children have to suffer. One can not change this drunk category.

Friend, You said "Only thing is you carry the best stuff". Duplicate stuff is available in Mumbai and Mangalore to an extent. But, looks like, you may not be aware that the spurious and duplicate stuff is rampant in Goa, Diu and Daman. I am saying this with my own experience. Many of my friends who go to Goa also say so.

I want the German alcohol policy implemented in Karnataka. We should be free to have a beer can in hand and travel in public transport. Beer should be available in all kiosks.

Excise duty is State level revenue in India, not central. So before blaming Mallya or Choksi, don't forget about Sheera bhagya.

It's not a shocking news for the mass Karnataka ...! It makes no much effect for person like me. I am the Sunday celebrite, a full premium scotch is enough for a whole year. Standard books of Pharmacology says one table spoon full (15 ml) is good as an appetiser, vasodilator . But it's worst adverse effect is tolerance and dependence. So 1 premium scotch for a whole is okay for medical/ legal/ finance advisor' s opinion. Thanks to Siddanna.
