Kalaburagi: Clash erupts after govt okays religion status for Lingayats; BJP slams Congress

Daijiworld Media Network - Kalaburagi

Kalaburagi, Mar 19: Soon after the Siddaramaiah-led Karnataka government accepted the suggestions of Nagamohan Das committee and okayed separate religion status for 'Lingayat' community on Monday, clashes broke out between Lingayat and Veerashaiva followers in Kalaburagi city.

The Lingayat supporters took out a victory rally at Sardar Patel circle, while the Veerashaiva supporters were protesting against CM Siddaramaiah and setting his and his cabinet ministers' portraits on fire.

Situation turned worse when Lingayat supporters beat up a Veerashaiva follower identified as M S Patil. The police had to intervene and disperse the crowd. Four were taken into custody.

An elated Tontadarya math swamiji told reporters that the 900-year-old fight for a separate religious tag is finally taking shape. However, Veerashaiva pontiff, Rambhpuri Guruji had earlier said, report submitted by Justice Nagmohan Das committee was biased and warned Congress consequences if they recommend it.

Karnataka cabinet's decision on Lingayats divisive: BJP

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called the Karnataka's Congress government decision on Monday to recognise the Hindu sects of Lingayats and Veerashaiva Lingayats as separate religion an attempt to "divide the Hindu society".

BJP accused Congress of indulging in “vote bank politics”. BJP party general secretary in-charge of Karnataka P Muralidhar Rao alleged that Siddarmaiah intends to "divide and rule".

"Congress carrying 'Divide and Rule' legacy of Britishers in India. Siddaramaiah ji is playing with fire for vote bank politics. Why has Congress done this before elections? Why haven't they done it 4 years back?" he said in a tweet.

The party's Lok Sabha member Shobha Karandlaje, tweeted: "Kannadigas (people of Karnataka) will never forgive you (Chief Minister) Siddaramaiah for your intention of dividing the Hindu society. For cheap vote bank politics, you are playing a dirty game. You cheated the whole community by dividing the leaders and Swamijis of Karnataka."

By granting a separate religion status, the ruling Congress was asking Lingayats and Veerashaiva Lingayats, who believe in 12th century social reformer Basava's ideologies, to not follow Hinduism, she alleged.

Briefing media persons after a cabinet meet, state law minister T B Jayachandra said: "Based on the recommendations of Karnataka State Minorities Commission, the state cabinet has unanimously decided to grant status of religious minority to Lingayats and Veerashaiva Lingayats."

Lingayats and Veerashaiva Lingayats,Awho worship Shiva, together constitute the largest community (17 per cent) in the southern state, and their votes could influence the outcome of the upcoming state assembly polls in April-May.

How can anyone worshipping Shiva be called as a Non Hindu. Shiva in any form, be it Linga or otherwise is one of the Trinities of the Hindu religion along with Brahma and Vishnu. Its dirty politics by a politician who once said he is not a Hindu and now after his Master said, has now become a Hindu. This would be the Waterloo of this congress government which has done nothing in the past 5 years but has indulged in spending crores of rupees on publicity. Corruption is at the highest level. They will definitely be kicked out of power. They have tried to outsmart BJP but have miserably shot at their own legs. The youth who are rejoicing at this turn of events, should realize, its the saddest day of their lives, they have been reduced from one of the dominant communities in Karnataka which gave so many Chief Ministers and Ministers to the state and the Centre to the status a MINORITY community. There won't be any pride left in them to call themselves as Basavanna's followers.

Sir, This is the exact point I made it our mass media. If the readers know the difference it easy to understand the dispute.
Please read the last article of Late Gauri Lankesh and M M Kalburgi has few books written on this subject.
I would rather say, this dispute is similar to Brahmanical dominance through Shankaracharya who made 'Jains' once the most populated majority community to minority of this nation.
But hardly our new generation new about the past history of Jainism.

In Gujarat Patels wanted backward status, Haryana Jats wanted backward status, Marathas wanted in Maharastra and Congress supported this and was behind the agitation. Now in Karnataka Lingayats want to be backwards and obviously Congress is behind this. Just see the results in all states and you will know what is going to happen in Karnataka.

In this century and age its surprising to see people indulging in caste politics ,its such shortsightedness,
to further the cause of winning elections ,otherwise this happening is absurdity .I am sure most of the population knows how to judge whats right. But these kind of happenings are a step backward in progressing our nation and its citizens as a whole.

In 2013 Yediyurappa appealed the UPA govt to give separate religion status for Lingayats and now Yeddi not uttering a single word about it. BJP President Amit Shah is from the minority community and why cant he recommend Modi govt to cancel the minority status for Jains which was given by UPA govt. Around 60 Lakhs Lingayats in Karnataka and at least 50 Lakhs from them will vote for Congress this time. Siddaramaiah have not done anything from his own but this demand came from Lingayat community and being an CM of the sate he addressed the issue. Now ball is in Modi govt's court, let BJP take the decision as they like.

Our mass media may have covered the separate religious issue of Lingayats. But I regret to say that none of our media is honest to make reader understand what is the core difference of 'Lingayat' , 'Veerashaiva' and 'Hinduism'.
By lack of understanding of the clear understanding of the subject 'Lingayat' became political issue blaming Congress and CM Siddaramaiah.
Most of the commenters don't even know 'Linga' worshipped by 'Lingayat' is nothing to do with Hinduism. Moreover 'Lingayat' always remained loyal to BJP in Karnataka and voting for them but their voice is being supressed due to intervention of 'Ashta mutt Swami's and 'Shankaracharyas.
Lingayat is the reformed religion which gave equal representation with casteism which otherwise controlled by Brahminism.
I would request all state mass media and Lingayat come forward and clear this misconception of divisive tag for the religion founded by 'Basavanna'.

"Meanwhile, BJP accused Congress for indulging in “vote bank politics”. BJP Party general secretary in-charge of Karnataka P Muralidhar Rao alleged that Siddarmaiah intends to "divide and rule"."

Something is amiss. Tontadrya Swamiji says 900 years of fight for a separate religion is succeeded today but BJP accuses Congress of 'Divide and Rule' - is BJP supreme commander of Hindus ? Since the constitution permits freedom of faith and since the Lingayat sect is in Karnataka, they approached the government. Their fight would have continued no matter which government is ruling in the sate. It could have been there when Yeddy Govt was ruling. If its vote-bank politics, why did Yeddy not heed to their fight ?

Its not the first time a fraction breaks away from the main group. Baba Saheb Ambedkar migrated to Buddhism with thousands of members from Mahaar community. There is Jainism, Sikkhism, Is this the first time this happening in the history and is it happening especially because of Congress ? Amusing !

There is a saying in Kannada - thaanu hada, haduvavanigu bida. BJP is just like this - won't do itself, won't let others do it.
