Bhatkal: Rejected by family, mother burns alive her 12-day-old girl baby

Bhatkal, Mar 13: In a shocking incident, a mother allegedly killed her own baby by burning it alive, reportedly depressed over the fact that her family refused to accept her as she had given birth to a girl.

The woman, identified as Yashoda from Vengtapur village here, alleged set her 12-day-old baby girl on fire. The baby died on Monday March 12 after battling for life in a hospital in Manipal.

Yashoda got married to Gopal about three years ago. They had been staying in a rented house in Bhatkal. When Yashoda became pregnant, she began staying in parental house located in Vengtapur.

About two weeks ago, Yashoda gave birth to a baby girl in Murdeshwar hospital. Since then, her family allegedly stopped seeing her. It is said that neither her mother nor her husband even came to see after the delivery, which distressed Yashoda.

After getting discharged from hospital, Yashoda returned to her mother's place with the baby. However, the behaviour of the family continued.

Yashoda, sensing that her family members were upset that she gave birth to a girl, reportedly went into depression, and poured oil on her 12-day-old baby and set her afire.

When the family members saw the baby burning and screaming, they rushed to rescue her. Yashoda's brother tried to douse the fire and took the baby to Manipal hospital. The baby unfortunately could not be saved.

It is said that at the time of the incident, Yashoda's husband was out on a fishing expedition.

Bhatkal rural police registered the case and arrested Yashoda, who is now in Karwal jail under judicial custody.

    Nature naturally helps Mother to protect her child at least till it grows up! Even Dog, Cat,Snake, Bird,Chimpanzee .. etc are no different.

    More over animals don't follow any religion & fight over it!!!

    We are all so proud of Being Human! But some of the act by Humans are so barbaric, feel ashamed of our self!!!

    Horrifying incident. Its a misconception that girl children are a liability. I have seen many girl children after they grow up looking after their parents well. Girls will have more affection towards parents than boys. Girl children will always have a strong love towards their family than boys. I am of the opinion that it's better to have girl children and boys. No family must illtreat a girl child. Girl child are a great asset to any family. Girl children are goddess Laxmi. They look after the family and always will show love towards father and mother. I am terrified horrified and feeling very very sad at this incident. Let there be no more such incidences in future. I am really feeling sad. I don't know how to express the anguish I am feeling at this incident. Its purely wrong on the part of family to do this. Let such an incident neve occurs in our state anymore

    When we have sleeping and dancing CM,these things are expected. His Bhagyas does not reach poor people. Instead of Shadi Bhagya there should be Beti Bhagya. This child could have been saved. It is humiliating for these sleeping people to follow Modi's " beti bachao beti padao " These mother require proper counselling to get out from post-natal depression. We should be ashamed that these things happen in 21st century. God save our country. Education is the only answer for all these problems .

    Rakesh mangalore,however this tragic case,here counselling needs not this mother but soceity,her husband and family.They hwoever forrgot that they too were once,girls and mothers/inlaw.Without a girl,boys too cant exist.Men are responsible by deciding a boy or girl baby.So dont blame ministers,or woman who deliver.God alone decides .when both family members give her the fault,then any woman will have depression and may commit horrible things like here.She could have given the bay to a childless family or go to a far place to live with that child alone .Poor baby ,no fault of its own,had to suffer a tragic death,caused by mother and family.May this angel live in Heaven with other angels.Mother must have handled in affect,so dont give her heavy punishment.instead take family to task.

    @Janush ,mangalore,no where girls in India are sure.This old time saga is continueing.Girls had to be married and gone that require lot of money,Lot of dowry makes everyone fear to have a girl baby.Govt should make it a point to set off this dowry system compulsery.The one who starts taking dowry should be punished.Afterall girls are being given good education that itself is enough later to earn their daily life.May later even after marraige harass to bring dowry more.So many fear a girl..But when a woman delivers a girl is not a cause to hate her and dont care.so people should be punished for acting like this.I pity that woman for not being loved by her husband ,but hating for delivering a baby girl.Poor familys have no chance to pay ahigh dowry and get marry their children.Thank God in christian community at present have no such dowry system problem.

    Really I am very sorry to hear this. Poor mother. First delivery. First baby. She wanted love from her husband and family. She did not get. With depression taken extreme decision.

    Her husband did not come to visit her after delivery. May be hard hearted man. No space in his heart to his wife and children.

    Now baby gone. Mother also may or may not get prison. But her soul and mind will be experiencing prison all her living days.

    There are many cases around the world where post-natal depression makes the mother do the unthinkable.

    Post-natal depression appears to make some women completely lose control over themselves.

    Other reasons could be making the condition worse.

    Hopefully her punishment will be light.

    Felt saddened by this incident which is happening in our society. Her husband and in-laws are equally guilty as she is.

    Our beloved institutions and govts are busy in dividing societies and peoples on the basis of their religion so they can fry their political interest. People should educate their family member s while they come across these issues in their families.
