Kundapur, Feb 25: Police personnel attached to the town police station here raided a spot near Lord Kotilingeshwara temple at Koteshwara near here on Saturday February 24 and took into possession four ancient idols of Jain Tirthankars, which are said to be commanding price of crores of rupees in the market.

The raid was conducted based on reliable information the police got. Five persons, who were taken into custody relating to this seizure, are being investigated.

Nevill Wilfy Mascarenhas from Padil, Mangaluru, Anil Furtado from Talaguppa in Shivamogga district, and Ashton Sequeira, resident of Kulshekar, Mangaluru, were standing near a Hyundai Verna car that was parked near the said temple, waiting for customers. John and Anila, residents of Church Road in the town were standing a little distance away.

Police sub-inspector from here, Harish, along with other staff, raided the spot, at which the persons tried to flee. The staff succeeded in taking them into custody. When questioned, they failed to provide satisfactory explanation about their presence at the spot. The police then searched the car and found four antique Tirthankara idols concealed under the seat. The police, who checked the idols, found that they were rare and ancient idols, value of which is difficult to ascertain.

When confronted with the idols, the accused confessed to their crime. The other two persons, John and Anila, were taken into custody on the basis of suspicion about their involvement.

The car, cash counting machine, Rs 40,000 in cash and cellphones were taken ito possession from the arrested persons. Further investigation is on.

It is very painful for the Parents, Brothers and sisters to digest the truth that their son is a Idol Thief. Even the community heads are also may be wondering how come the lad from their place has been arrested. Even Political Bosses might have scratched their head as one culprit is the general secretary of NSUI. Ultimately it is a life long black spot over the family and the community. I pity them.

A police case and arrest is not a truth. A conviction in the court is truth.

The whole point that he belongs and is a upcoming leader of NSUI , should throw questions around the circumstances of his arrest. You can’t come to conclusions based on a few paragraphs of a news article... which itself is one sided based on police statement.

I also join with you to see a clean Ashton. I don't want our youth go in a different track. Be a tough mom to your kids. Then no chance for me or anybody to write Non-sense.

These jobless people should be punished. I used think our community is the best and there are very few crimes.
There may be master mind behind these crimes and these master minds must be caught and exposed. Rich temples with gold and gold ornaments are targetted and proper precautions should be taken from these thieves.

Don’t come to any conclusions based on police statement. Karnataka is going to see a lot of young people go behind bars before the polls. It looks more of a case of political vendetta.

Those statues are really beautiful and must be dear to the Jains. I advise that they build a strong enclosure around the statues so that they do not get stolen in the future.

There are many thieves in Kundapur area I feel. Many youngsters want to make quick money by means of robbery stealing and by means of selling illegal alcohol etc. These are bad activities. The elders and social workers in society must work hard towards ending this social menace. In modern day society, there must be modern discipline and honesty in life.
