Udupi, Feb 16: In an incident which happened at Pitrody, Udyavar near here late in the night on Thursday February 15, a gang forced its way into a house there and savagely attacked a youth. The victim of the attack was Vidnal D'Souza.

The alleged attackers have been identified as Giriraj, son-in-law of Sugandhi, president of Udyavar gram panchayat, Sanjeeva, and Vijeeth.

In the past, a quarrel had broken out between Giriraj and local villagers about the widening of a road at Chullukudru. The said road passes from in front of the residence of panchayat president,Sugandhi. Giriraj, it is said, had haughtily told the villagers that he would not allow widening of the road as it passes through the house of Sugandhi. Vidnal, it is said, was among the villagers who had resented the rude behaviour of Giriraj and rebuked him.

Because of the grouse at this incident, Giriraj, assisted by his accomplices, allegedly entered the house of Vidnal and attacked him. Villagers who heard the cries of Vidnal, rushed to the spot to help him. Seeing the villagers, the attackers fled from there, it is said. In the meanwhile, the villagers have retained the car in which the accused had arrived on the spot.

A case about the incident was filed in Kaup police station. Sanjeeva and Vijeeth stand arrested by the police. Both of them secured release through bail. Main accused, Giriraj, is absconding, and the police have launched a search for him.

It is outrageous that the two accused were able to get the bail even before the main accused was arrested. How were they able to get the bail so quickly?

Anarchy has no place in civilized society. I am not well versed with Indian law regarding eminent domain. If broadening the road is required for greater good of the society, a legal recourse need to be followed as opposed to hacking each other. There is no end to blood shed in our country, I do agree with Mr. Valerian DSouza, seems like some of the northern evil social elements have permeated South Kanara which was known to be a cradle of culture and civility.
