Bengaluru: Amid row, photos of Jagadish Shettar, Yeddyurappa in 'Tipu' events go viral

Bengaluru, Oct 23 (Agencies): Amid a heated debate on Tipu Sultan’s birthday celebrations, old photographs of former chief ministers and senior BJP leaders B S Yeddyurappa and Jagadish Shettar participating in programmes allegedly related to Tipu Sultan have gone viral on social media. The photo of Shettar shows him dressed as Tipu Sultan.

Former deputy chief minister R Ashoka and former Lok Sabha member D B Chandre Gowda are also seen wearing the headgear in the viral photos.

However, Shettar denied that the photo was from Tipu Jayanti celebrations. "It was from an award ceremony of the party's minority morcha, where we were given headgears and swords," he said.

BJP sources claimed that Yeddyurappa's photo was taken in 2010 at an Iftar party and had nothing to do with Tipu Sultan.

Chief minister Siddaramaiah has said Shettar had written a preface to a book praising the valour of Tipu. Shettar had called Tipu a patriot in a book written by historian Sheikh Ali.

"When Yeddyurappa was in KJP (Karnataka Janata Paksha), he had celebrated Tipu Jayanti and Shobha Karandlaje had also attended the event. Now why is Yeddyurappa opposing Tipu Jayanti? They (BJP) are opposing it for political reasons," Siddaramaiah said.

"These photographs are proof of the BJP's double standards and hypocrisy. The BJP leaders who had earlier praised Tipu Sultan are now criticizing him for political gains," he said.

The Siddaramaiah government has decided to celebrate Tipu Jayanti on November 10, when the BJP is planning to call a statewide protest against the 'minority appeasement' politics.

Many BJP leaders, including Union Minister Ananth Kumar Hegde, had refused to join the birthday celebrations of Tipu Sultan, terming him “anti-Hindu and anti-Kannada.”

BJP general secretary and MP Shobha Karandlaje said the party will launch a protest if the government goes ahead with the celebrations.

“There is no need to include the names of BJP leaders in the invitation on the pretext of following protocol. The government is spreading communal hatred by repeatedly organising Tipu Jayanti." Shobha said.

Behind all this drama, what has to be appreciated is that we Indians are tolerant. These leaders do not hate any community. They will do what is necessary to get the community support. Check in Pakistan- no leader dare wear a tilak or visit a Hindu temple. He will be killed for doing so.

Today, medieval India is seen as a place of eternal religious conflict. But that view is more due to modern-day politics than the actual events of history.
Tipu was the most feared Indian of his time in Britain. He was the only Indian ruler who understood the dangers the British posed to India, and fought four wars to oust them from India in that sense he could be called the first freedom fighter in the subcontinent.
Tipu was fascinated by western science and technology, and got gun makers, engineers, clockmakers and other experts from France to Mysore. He then set up his own manufacture of bronze cannons, ammunition and muskets to “Make in Mysore”.
Tipu was not an outside invader he was a son of the soil, the third generation of his family to be born in south India.Tipu’s chief minister Purnaiya, was a Hindu, as were several prominent nobles at his court.
Tipu was a generous patron of several Hindu temples, including the Sri Ranganatha temple near his main palace at Srirangapattana, and the Sringeri Math, whose swami he respected and called Jagadguru.
Attacking temples during war wasn't exactly unusual (for example, the Maratha attack on the Tirupati shrine in 1759 is little remembered). But this was no ordinary place of worship. It had been founded a thousand years before by the father of Hindu Advaita philosophy, Adi Shankaracharya. The monk set up an abbey in each corner of the subcontinent: Shringeri in the South, Puri in the East, Dwaraka in the West and Joshimath in the North.
With the rise of Hindutva in Karnataka in the 1990s, Tipu’s image was sought to be changed from a secular freedom fighter to Muslim tyrant. However, this incident stuck out like a sore thumb. The event – where “Hindu” Marathas attacked a temple protected by a “Muslim” Tipu – confused people who would have liked to see medieval Karnataka as a mirror of modern India, with Hindu-Muslim communal sentiment being a major axis of politics.

These BJP fellows can put even a chameleon to shame. Although I am not in favour of organising this Tippu Jayanti, it now appears that it was the BJP who started all this drama. And now they are taking a U-turn. But that is of a piece with their habits.
They keep blowing hot and cold over matters. The most unreliable party.
