Chennai: Russian tourist seeks alms at Kanchipuram temple

Daijiworld Media Network - Chennai (SP)

Chennai, Oct 12: Destitute persons and families are often seen begging near temples, Maths or other centres of worship which are thronged by people eager to earn divine grace. Deviating from this practice, a Russian tourist was seen begging from the visitors to the temple at the main gate of Kumara Kottam temple at Kanchipuram in the state on Tuesday October 10. Surprisingly, this tourist was not a destitute, but an ultlra rich tourist from Russia, identified as Evangelin Berngowe (32).

Evangelin, who had undertaken world tour, had arrived in India on September 24. He had travelled many places in north India before beginning south Indian tour. He possesses his passport, visa and other documents. He travelled through length and breadth of Kanchipuram town, which is known for ancient temples, after coming here from Chennai on Tuesday morning. He later visited an ATM kiosk located near Lord Kumara Kottam temple on West Raja Street, Kanchipurm. To his bad luck, the ATM card he inserted into the ATM machine was swallowed by the machine and in spite of his best efforts, it could not be retrieved. It is said that he had forgotten his PIN.

The tourist came back from the ATM kiosk but he had no money for food or to even return to Chennai. He then thought of begging for money to pool enough money to return to Chennai. A few devotees, who were surprised, put some money in the outstretched hat of Evangelin. But the personnel of Siva Kanchi police station nearby, who came to know about this strange beggar, came there and took him to the police station. During the questioning, they realized that the frustrated Russian was really rich and was in possession of all the documents needed for travel but lack of money had forced him to beg. The police also came to know that he had exhausted money in his cellphone too. The harassed traveller had searched for fellow Russians in the town for help but failed to find any. Therefore he had decided to beg.

They then handed over some money to him to meet expenses till he reached Chennai. He was put on a train to Chennai and advised to get down at Egmore and reach Russian embassy from there for further arrangements.

Really pathetic scene. Sometimes certain circumstances force anyone to do this act. So being human we have to help such persons who have come from abroad on tour.

If he was some poor Indian with the same predicament, none of our fellowmen would have accepted his story; only because of his white skin people went out of the way to help??

I saw a man in front of a Church, with a leg wrapped with worn-out gauge. People did feel bad for him and put a coin or two in his tin. To my utter shock, a while later, I saw the same man carrying a rag-picking bag and going somewhere.

As such, your concern for an Indian in a situation as this tourist is absurd. In India one can have at-least one relative who will house/help him for a day/two by when he can set things right with the bank to get his ATM card back. For this man, convincing the bank to sort his problem may have been an herculean task.

Sometime it can happen in this digital age. I cam across a couple who In Mangalore Kadri Temple 4 years ago sleeping on temple floor,Yuri and Tania from Russia. After talking to them they turned out to be lovely couple who had lost money and on the way to Ernakulam. We took them home and they lived with us for 3 days and 2 nights. Never troubled us. We gave them access to Internet and own room and shared food on the table. Later after 3 days we dropped them at Train station and gave them some money and tickets for onward Journey. At the time of leaving Mangalore they were filled with tears and were thankful for Mangalore and its people. Dear people please help people when they have need and not greed ! What we do someday will be returned to us in some good way of blessings!

I liked your comment very much and its my opinion too. We never know who will come to our help just in-case we happen to in such a position. Always remember, what we do to help others, always comes back to our loved ones when they are in trouble.

I agree, the world is not as honest as we expect it to be but lets not contain our helping nature fearing adverse affects.

    Sushma Swaraj, who tweeted,
“Your country Russia is our time-tested friend. My officials in Chennai will provide you all help.”
She is a savior for people who are critically in need of help (medical, diplomatic or otherwise)
In this digital era, sometimes we are not fully guaranteed with the digital facilities.
While travelling, especially tourists must keep liquid currency to for emergency or in case of any unforeseen eventuality
Thankfully, some bad elements did not take a chance part with the cash!
Hospitality is the quality of our culture.

@Mac mangalore, what Ahmed mangalore said is nt wrong.Of course some people do beg ,go to gulf special at that time to sit and beg. They know people there give rich alms at that time.Dont make irrsinn comments.even though it is not allowd to beg ,many people do it and were caught, even a woman did it.I should praise our police for extended help to this Russian man without any problems.Do police have a heart?I say yes.

Tourists from the European countries begging in Thailand has become big problem there...also in some other South East Asian countries ..Often some white tourists from the European countries have made it as a hobby to travel to poor South East Asian countries without money and fund their trip by begging on the street..
Hope such trend doesn't spread to India..
Everything is white privilege... Meanwhile somewhere in North India blacks where beaten up recently

I wonder you did not mention Asian beggars flocking Arab countries during the holy month of Ramadhan.

Though there is a ban on begging, on a sly, many do this business sand quietly return to their country after the duration of their visa completes.

I read in"Arab News" that in Saudi Arabia, a journalist disguised himself as a beggar and stood begging in front of a mosque during Ramadan to find out how much beggars get, and by the end of the day, he collected more than 5000 Saudi Riyals.

So what... Did I defend them... Atleast Saudi is a rich country it doesn't create problem to their economy....
But I don't understand why white European tourists begging for their Trip from poor countries in South East Asia...It is a growing problem there ...Rather than tourism benefiting their economy it is ruining them... I had similar concerns for India...that's all no need to get enraged and start whataboutery..
