Mangaluru: Rains gain momentum, situation in state changes

Mangaluru, Sep 16: There were severe concerns that out of 176 taluks in state, 160 taluks will be affected by drought, as rains were comparatively scanty this year.

However, since the last 15 days the heavy rains the state received has changed the drought situation. The number of taluks receiving scanty rainfall has reduced to 37.

Out of the 176 taluks, 91 are receiving average rainfall, 37 taluks are receiving rainfall below average and 48 above average.

The Haliyal taluk in Uttar Kannada district has received the least rainfall and taluks in Dharwad and Kodagu district have received rainfall above average.

In the coastal region, Belthangady, Bantwal and Sullia regions have received scanty rainfall.

The revenue department which records rainfall between June and September, prepared a list of taluks that have received scanty rainfall. It has taken into record that till September 14, 37 taluks received below average rainfall. However, there are chances that the rain may increase by the end of September. The list is prepared taking these facts into consideration.

Heavy rainfall continues in Mangaluru city.

    It is good that we are having good rains now. Nevertheless Mangalore and many areas along the coast have had deficit rains for the entire year, Mangalore itself at about 21 % deficit as of September 1st. Even though we are getting good rains now it is likely not enough to make up for the large yearly deficit in many places in Karantaka. Water rationing may occur next April in some areas. Hopefully the population will conserve water until then, and not blame the government and officials if and/or when water rationing occurs, or if food prices rise per lack of water for plants.
