Bhatkal, Sep 14: Tension prevailed here on Saturday, September 16 as the man who attempted self -immolation two days back breathed his last.

Ramachandra Nagappa Naika (26), a resident of Asarakeri is the person deceased.

He was hospitalized in Manipal for two days after he sustained 50 % burns.

On Thursday as people protested against the town council's move to hold open auction of shops within its limits, Ramachandra, the brother of one of the shop owners had attempted suicide when officials came forward to seize the shops for auction.

Ramachandra’s brother Eshwar who rushed to his rescue also had suffered burns on his hands.

As soon as the news of self-immolation spread, shop owners and public had gathered in large numbers and staged a flash protest by blocking the road.

Ramachandra Nagappa Naika's body reached Bhatkal on Saturday morning.

More than 500 police personnel have been deployed in Bhatkal as security to avoid any untoward incident.

Superintendent of police (SP) Vinayak Patil is monitoring the security situation. Bhatkal MLA Mankal Vaidya has also reached. Funeral is expected to take place soon.
