Fr Tom's rescue shows growing respect for India: Ravi Shankar Prasad

New Delhi, Sep 12 (IANS): The rescue of a Catholic priest from Kerala, Tom Uzhunnallil, from captivity in Yemen displays the growing respect for India internationally, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Tuesday.

Prasad was asked about the release of the priest who was abducted by terrorists in Yemen's Aden in March last year and was rescued from an undisclosed location in Yemen after intervention of the Oman government.

"We are very happy. The details will be disclosed by the Ministry of External Affairs," Prasad said, adding: "There was serious concern... the father hailed from Kerala."

"Now we are told that he has been released. The government of India undertook serious diplomatic steps. It only shows rising political respect that India commands," he said.

Uzhunnallil, who belongs to Kottayam district, was brought to Muscat, the capital of Oman, on Tuesday morning.

Later, the Indian priest left Muscat on board an Oman Air aircraft for an audience with the Pope in Vatican.

Uzhannallil is an employee of the Vatican, which has been engaged in talks with various quarters for his release.

The Oman government took the lead in getting him released after a papal representative visited Oman last month and had an audience with the King of Oman.

Living in Oman we are so proud and privileged that His Majesty Sultan Qaboos and the Omani govt was involved in getting the release of Fr. Tom. It is a know fact that His Majesty has helped many Govts in not only getting release of their citizens but also brokering peace between nations because of his sound and friendly foreign policy of having very good relations with all Govts in the world.
If any Govt wants to be successful in their foreign policy i think Oman is the best example. We as residents of this country have great love and respect for our leader His Majesty and we pray that the Almighty God shower his mighty blessings upon him with good health and our best wishes go out to the friendly Omani people.
Also looking in the right prospective it is very clear that the collaboration of the Vatican and the Omani Govt which has helped in the release of Fr. Tom and if the Indian govt has contributed in anyway towards the release of Fr. Tom we appreciate its efforts.
As His Majesty and the Pope Francis always propagate love and peace in this world let us also work towards this goal to make this world a better place for all to live.
"Let hate and violence be of the past and let love and peace be of the present and future".

Ravi Prasad (mantri) is talking crap and wants to take undue credit with an eye on Kerala voters. It's Omani Sultan who mediated in the release of Fr. Tom.

R.S.Prasad don't take undue credit instead thank Vatican for release of the priest. As long you have secular friends all over the world you will be surviving and save your posterior. This is reality which is opposite to your FAKUISM.

Oman has been a friendly and trading partner with India since ages, much before the current Sultan was born. Khimjis have settled there over 100 years ago and so are so many Indians who are now Omani' Nationals. Some prominent Indians in Oman may have intervened with the Govt. to secure the release. Our Manthri is trying to take credit. Foolish Fellow !!! Tomorrow it will slowly shift to the credit of the BJP.
