Mangaluru: Fr Victor D'Mello rubbishes allegations, shows proof of innocence

Daijiworld Media Network

Mangaluru, Aug 17: Former parish priest of Urwa Victor D'Mello, who is currently serving as parish priest of Our Lady of Remedies Church at Kirem, has been accused of 'misappropriating' Rs 11 lac allegedly after forging the will of Urwa parishioner Annie Pais, a spinster, and taking her thumb impression soon after she breathed her last on July 31, 2010.

A private complaint was filed by an Urwa parishioner in the local court, which referred it to the local police station for investigation.

A report based on the complaint was published in an English daily of repute a couple of days back, giving rise to several questions and creating anxiety among the parishioners of Urwa and also the faithfuls of the diocese.

Based on the complaint filed by Winnie Pinto, the niece of Annie Pais, case has also been filed against Irene Lobo, an 84-year-old spinster who was a close friend of Annie Pais and was living with her for during her last years. It is alleged that Irene had transferred the amount of Rs 11 lac from Annie Pais' account to Fr D'Mello's account. Kevin Martis, the then parish council vice-president, Jenevive Mathias, the then parish council secretary, both of whom were witnesses to the second will of Annie Pais, are also accused in the case.

The allegation is that the first will, dated February 4, 2008 is in English and has all the details such as her movable and immovable properties, cash at bank, fixed deposit details etc which were duly signed by Annie Pais, and notarised. But the second will, dated June 18, 2010, according to the police complaint, does not bear clauses of the first will, and does not bear the signature of Annie Pais, nor the notary stamp. But it has her thumb impression. In the will, Annie had reportedly allotted her property and cash to the 30 members of her family.

Fr Victor D'Mello shows proof of innocence

When Daijiworld correspondent visited Fr D'Mello at Kirem church, he said he was unfazed by the allegations, but expressed disappointment at the one-sided reports by certain newspapers. He hinted that a certain person from Urwa parish who wanted to settle a score with him could be planting stories to defame him.

He explained that he has nothing to do with the will of Annie Pais or with Irene Lobo. He recalled the cordial relation between the two spinster friends Annie and Irene. He also recalled that Annie Pais wanted people to remember her through the church even after her death, so she wanted to donated her house to the church, but instead of taking the house, Irene and the parish council members convinced her to build an adoration chapel in her name. She agreed and volunteered to write a letter in the form of a 'will', which, due to her ill health, she could not sign, but she put her thumb impression and gave the letter through Irene Lobo.

"I am extremely surprised to see newspaper report that the complaint accuses me of taking thumb impression of Annie after her death. This is really cruel. I have nothing to do with it. People should not make stories without verifyng it," he said.

He further said that an amount of Rs 12 lac was there in the joint bank account of Annie Pais and Irene Lobo, and after the death of Annie Pais, Irene legally got that money into her account, and from that money, she transferred Rs 10 lac to the parish priest's account for buildng the adoration chapel.

Fr D'Mello has provided the copy of statement to Daijiworld, which shows that the amount was transferred on December 7, 2010 in three transactions of Rs 3 lac each twice, and 4 lac one entry.

"The newspaper report sounds as if the money has come to my personal account. It has not. The money has been transferred to the parish priest account which was duly audited and accounted. Out of Rs 10 lac, Rs 9.5 lac has already been spent on building the adoration chapel, so where is the question of cheating or misappropriation of money by me?" questioned Fr D'Mello.

"I am extremely pained by the false allegations against me. I have requested the bishop of Mangaluru to appoint any kind of committee to investigate the accounts. I am ready for anything. I only pray that the Almighty shows the right path and guides those who are trying to spoil my name by creating stories for their personal gain and ego," he said.

"I was transferred from Urwa in May 2015. Before leaving Urwa, I made a public appeal to the parishioners to meet me if there was any doubt regarding accounts of the church or any other matter. But no one came forward. Now I am surprised that after so many years they are dragging my name into this. I have done my duty as parish priest, and with utmost satisfaction I have been serving God through my service."

When Daijiworld contacted a few parishioners in Urwa, they were of the opinion that Fr Victor D'Mello was transparent in managing his account, and he was known as the 'people's priest' as he had initiated several pro-poor projects to reach out to the needy. In 2009 during his tenure as parish priest, he took the initiative of raising Rs 38 lac as medical fund by organising Fancy Fete and Bazar, which has been helping not only the poor parishioners of Urwa but people throughout the diocese at large in meeting their medical needs.

The police are expected to submit a report to the court by next week.

Fr. Victor. D'mello known to many people, there is no doubt in his honesty. There are some people to satisfy their ego doing these kinds of work and end up by getting themselves bad name.

There is no doubt Fr.Victor will come out clean, and by this his name will get more and more popular.

If you go by the allegations, its very clear that It’s planned campaign over a period of time. Media should have verified its authenticity before publishing. Where was Winnie Pinto when Annie Pais alive ???.

    Truth always wins.

Luke 16:15. You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of others; but God knows your hearts; for what is prized by human beings is an abomination in the sight of God

No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other; or devoted to the one and despise the other. You can not serve God and wealth.

Luke 5:31-32. Lord answered, Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.

This matter is nothing but destroying a person in the “Public Opinion Court”, when the allegations are baseless and cannot be proven with evidence in a court. This is defaming a person with bad faith intentions bearing false witness. Those Christians who bear false witness by advancing false baseless allegations would befall to the wrath of law for their own detriment. Because bearing false witness by advancing baseless allegations is the worst form of crime that falls below the human dignity. No one has such moral or legal rights. Instigating a case or claim with falsehood and bad faith is a crime of its own of criminal nature indicating flawed character, no person shall ever promote such matter. This is very simple. A lady who had the legal rights to dispose of funds following the demise of her joint account holder, had been abused for some personal gain by some people who did not like the deed, accusing another person. There is no substance in this matter. Hope such people withdraw their baseless petitions and seek forgiveness for their unjust allegations. There is God, and that God has the power to prevail over people who bear false witness.

Dear Fr. D'Mello; Our heart goes out for you. People with NO Conscience consider themselves Holier
than Thou and resort to inhumane activities. .
I had one such experience - I just leave it up to the Man on the Cross!
I sponsored a family to the U.S. - What little I knew at the time that they had to leave India to avoid Jail Time! They were caught stealing lots of cash from a company in Mangalore.
They repeated their ART in the U.S. Cost me over a million dollars and lots of grief!
Rather than admitting their guilt and apologize/repay they decided to accuse the sponsors of Human
Trafficking! Many people bought the story - told with emotion laden tears!
    Fabrication paid off!
But father its a short term, temporary joy - the long term horror awaits!
Take courage and fight like a mean Red-Neck! That's the only language some people understand!
We pray for YOU and WISH YOU the VERY BEST!

The allegations are to be separated from facts to understand the matter in legal terms. The two spinsters had a “joint account”. Under the banking regulations, the joint account belongs to the survivor upon death of other joint accontee, thus it is also called TOD, transfer upon death account. In this case no NO will applies. A will would apply if both spinsters die. The person who survived can use the funds for any purpose. Here the surviving spinster gave it to the church account and it is allegedly documented. Whatever the church did with the money would in accordance with the wish of the surviving spinster, regardless who influenced her by whatever means. The prevailing legal facts are (1) joint account, (2) the survivor has the custody of the joint account upon the death of other, and (3) the survivor has legal right to dispose of the funds however she or he pleases. Rest all information is baseless.

I have known Fr. Victor D'Mello closely for the last two and half years. We have shared a lot about life and ministry and we have undertaken a pilgrimage together to the Holy Land not too long ago. During the Holy Land tour, we shared a room together. We had so much time to share about life and all the topics under the sun. Fr. Victor always came across as an open, sincere, genuine, kind and loving friend. He is a man of God, has deep love for the people and always works tirelessly for the welfare of the people under his care. He has a special corner in his heart for the less fortunate.
I was shocked and pained to see the allegations made out against him in some sections of the press. It is so unfortunate and despicable that the media carried the news without verifying the truth of the matter.
I always believe challenges and crisis moments bring out the best in people. This little hurdle that has come on the way will simply bring out the best in Fr. Victor and he will come out of it stronger, victorious and powerful to bear even greater testimony to the love of God and serve people.
Dear Fr. Victor, we are with you during this trying moment. Don't get dismayed or disheartened. Keep your cool. Carry on with the good that you are doing. May God bless you and lead you out of it all. Assuring you of our support and best wishes.

The overwhelming response in favour of Fr. Victor D'Mello is expected. As stated by Mr. Alex and Mrs. Lynette in today's response, our relationship with Fr. Victor too dates back to nearly two decades through Couples For Christ. Since then he has been our Mentor. A noble priest, humble and righteous, has lead scores of families to the spirit filled life through devoted priesthood, teaching and guidance.

It is no secret that the campaign is planned and nurtured over a period by a few to humble the priest and thus satisfy their ego. But they should understand it has hurt the community of God to which they belong to, and the God they worship, more than meeting with their intention. In the prevailing circumstances all over, outsiders may grab the opportunity to foment discord and affect our unity too.

We appeal them to understand the futility of the purpose, kill the ego, cleanse the conscience and reconcile.

You belong to us, we need you. Together let us build the community and Church by building loving and serving relationship.

Father, we understand how you feel. Please do not get perturbed. God is with you.

    Liza, Urwa

I am a long standing parishioner of Urwa. In short, I can say Fr. Victor is an exemplary priest with all good virtues including perfection imbibed in him. After his leaving Urwa I remember him at every Mass for his well prepared homily and also for his clear and meaningful Mass. He once said `I offer every Mass with a feeling that it is my first and the last Mass’. Before he left Urwa, he has seen to it that the Urwa Church and the surrounding premises were perfect in all respects.

To settle scores with Fr. Victor, the learned man has made the niece of Late Annie Pais a scapegoat.

With this type of accusations on a man of God, I wonder how this man in a few years time, would stand before the judgment seat.

Why not initiate defamation proceedings against this man rather than getting Fr. Victor D’Mello arrested for Rs.11.00 lakhs only, that too spent by him to build a House for God.

To become a priest is not personal or own self choice it is the call from God. Priest who gives Jesus to us. Being a Catholic it's right and duty to pray for our priest and support him in his missionary work. Leaving his family he serves the people of God. Jesus was pointed out by scribes and pharasies saying he eats with sinners sits with tax collector's (Mt 9:11).

While doing good works or taking up projects priest doesn't carry with him but without caring his health he works and at last hears this from the beneficiary. Priest alone doesn't take up any projects there is a committee about the financial matters. Making allegations is easy but before that go and speak to the person if you have any doubts ask the finance committee who works tirelessly.

A priest is ordained to be a king to be project and to be a priest and everyone has received this mission through baptism. Priest has received this in higher manner with his annointment on the day of ordination. A king works for his people and remember how much pain he takes . If he is a prophet then over he is a bad priest.

It's very sad to hear the allegations that is made against Fr Victor .

Those who have made allegations please verify yourself and examine the conscience in the same words if Jesus One who has not sinned let him throw the first stone.

Fr Victor praying for you and the persecutors.

Wherever he served we first listen only 'good' about him ie concerned for the poor and loves the poor people. A greedy man whose desire for money will never have sympathy heart for the poor people.

Always a source of great inspiration, he brought the parishioners together by organising various programs and activities in the church. He only had to say the word and people would get the job done.
As urwa parishioners, we, along with our children, are witnesses to his compassion for the people and his good deeds.
Whenever children saw him, they ran towards him to seek his blessings.

As Pope Francis rightly said: "I’m not a star, but the servant of servants of God”..

Priests are always considered as representatives of God. They leave all worldly attachment, pleasure and sacrifice wealth, property, money and everything in order to serve God as well as people. Without any concrete proof accusing any priest is not at all good; it invites curse of God. People should not take law in their own hands. Even, if they make mistake so what? Don’t we do mistakes? Don’t we cheat one another? There is an authority like Bishop and this type of matters can be reported to the Bishop; if it is true, who will deal appropriately.

I have known some cases, where people hasten to accuse, attack or level legal action against them without any proper evidence. I also know some priests who are from rich families, highly educated, gulf return left everything and leaving a very down to earth life. In some cases, they do not have a proper meal and stay in remote places, where there is no proper church and house to stay. We need to consider all these things before we level allegations and charges against them…

Let us all pray to the Almighty that the people have levelled charges against Rev. Fr. Victor D’Mello may realize the mistakes and refrain from defaming the priests, who are working for the Kingdom of God.

We are surprised and pained to read the allegations against Rev. Fr. Victor D'Mello in the news paper. The correspondent should have contacted Rev. Fr. Victor D'Mello before carrying the false and defaming news. How can we trust the reports in these news papers?
We know Rev. Fr. Victor D'Mello for decades together. Our association with him goes back to the days when he was assistant parish priest at Shirva. He is one of the very few who work for the people. He is dedicated, honest and sincere. Whether it is administration, whether it is offering mass or preaching, Rev. Fr. Victor D'Mello does it with utmost dedication. He knows the difficulties and needs of the people. Because of this he is loved and honoured by the parishioners wherever he has gone.
It is true, you can not please everyone, especially when you are honest and sincere. Even Jesus was rebuked and condemned when he was doing good. His true followers are also not spared.
Now it is clear that the allegations in the news paper were false and biased. We hope the news paper carries these clarification if it is honest
We pray that the people who work against Rev. Fr. Victor D'Mello may get God's grace to realise the truth so that they refrain from defaming the people who are with truth and work for people.

It is really hurting to know the conspiracy behind. Those who know Fr., Victor personally, does not need any certification to describe his character. He is a person with high integrity and honesty. May be the straight forward attitude of him is troubling those few , who does not appreciate such open style of expressions, what he follows.
Moreover, it is a very positive development that a priest could clearly come out with facts and figures to narrate his innocence. Can others show the same courage and confidence to come out with facts as Fr. Victor did ?
It is unfortunate that diocese is not paying a decent salary to the priests. Even a coolie person is earning more salary than a church priest today. Later, we laity people blame that, they misappropriate the funds etc. I am told that in Mangalore Diocesan parish priest is paid with Rs. 6000 as salary. In my view, at least they should be paid with additional petrol allowances and the parish where they serve should pay for their health insurance . While ,we carry a habit of criticising them when they do not perform, we should also care for them at least in terms of their health and decent salary aspects.
Fr. Victor, don't get disheartened by all these allegations. Nothing to worry. Take it cool. Now you are Kirem, so need not think too much about Urwa. There are more wise people there, to follow up. You relax.

If the allegations are false, we should seriously think of theallegator. If it's proved wrong, should be punished. Better sense should prevail.
Fr D'Mello is a people's priest , particularly for the poor people.
I wish him not to get demoralised with this,.

I have known Fr Victor D Mello for decades now. There has not been an instance when he has refused to help people. I can vouch for his innocence and hope the Almighty guide the accuser from his or her misunderstanding
