Udupi, Aug 8: In a unique protest, social worker Nithyananda Olakadu on Tuesday, August 8, swam symbolically in potholes to catch the attention of concerned authorities regarding the pathetic condition of Malpe-Manipal national highway 66.

The well-know social worker, donned in a rain coat and gloves, received enough support from the locals for the symbolic protest.

Addressing mediapersons, Nithyananda Olakadu said, “Manipal is popularly known all over the world as an educational hub. Recently, I had a bad experience, when a patient who had suffered a cardiac arrest, died before we could reach hospital. He died half way to the hospital, due to the pathetic condition of roads here. So I decided to protest.”

“Thousands of commuters use this road. The road from Syndicate circle to MIT Manipal is completely damaged. There are many slush-filled potholes, the road resembles like a mini paddy field and vehicles move with great difficulty. Both the central and the state government should draw their attention to these NH roads,” he stated.

“The concerned department should take certain measures. As the road is upgraded to national highway, special facilities should be provided by the government which are missing here. The road must be concretised. The contract workers and commission agents are enjoying part of funds instead of providing service. Due to the poor quality of concrete works, the locals are suffering since years. Such contractors name should be black-listed. The concerned department should start concrete work at the earliest,” added Nithyananda.

“Taxi driver Vittal, who has working since 32 years in Manipal said, “We are facing the same problem since years. No one is bothered about the road. There is still some confusion if the road belongs to CMC or NHAI. There is no lighting at Manipal bus stop since two months. This shows the municipality’s negligence towards the interests of the people.”

Harish, a conductor said, “There is no space to park buses at Manipal bus stand. It is very hard to pass through this road. Driving is a big challenge on these roads.”

Tharanatha Mesta, a protester, expressed his anger by symbolically fishing in the potholes.

Balakrishna Kodavoor and other locals joined the symbolic protest.

    What a pity!

This is a busy road where Government officials, Ministers and People's representatives also travel on a daily basis. Are they not knowing the condition of road?

Does this person has to swim there and wake them up?

This place is a hub of educational institutions and hospitals and see the condition.

Road and roads should be named after the contractor with his photographer who did the road with his full address and contact number instead of naming in the dead mans name.

Nice move by the Social Activist & others who supported him to show their displeasure and highlight the pathetic condition of our roads. This roads are always temporary filled when any high ranking government officials are visiting Manipal and then it is back to the same old situation after few days. This is an occurring problems year after year, which seems to have no solution unless the roads are well concreted. Hope the government would act immediately.

It's time the Manipal group gives back to the Society by constructing a good road as a social cause.
    Lead by example.
Thousands of critical patients are travelling to the hospital daily. Travelling this stretch of road is a harrowing experience even for the healthy.

@sri- elder karkala, what matters if it is a national or high way?road should be still made fit for transport and not for fishing.Afterall the one who did it got money ,not for umme.People should be aware of importance of it,first place panchayat,or corporation ,whatever it is.It is a public road. When it was own ,they would do it with more heart and good as possible.

I think Manipal Group can repair & maintain it as CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiative if NHAI fails. No harm in that.

Give something back to the society also.

Cannot believe the roads of Manipal a internationally famous place for the education and medical treatment have such bad roads. Social worker Nithyananda Olakadu is doing a good job, but the elected representatives are deaf, dumb, and blind, only during election they wake up. Will Udupi MLA Pramod Madhwaraj ply is Rolls Royce ply on this road? What is the MP doing Shobha Karandlaje doing? If9850 there is any problem in Mangalore or DK she is present, Madam you have to look after your Constituency.
