Mangaluru, Aug 6: The auto driver who was grievously injured in the drunk driving accident on the night of Sunday August 6 passed away on Monday August 7.

Praveen Kumar (21), who was admitted to hospital, breathed his last on Monday morning.

He was standing near his auto rickshaw at Jyothi on Monday night when a speeding Ritz car moving from Bunts Hostel rammed into him and an auto rickshaw. Three other auto drivers were also injured in the accident and are recuperating in hospital. Two of them have been identified as Ashok and Jagadish.

Praveen Kumar

Praveen, a native of Madikeri, has two brothers, elder and younger.

The driver of the car, identified as Anish John, was arrested later, while another person who was with him managed to escape.

It is alleged that the driver was drunk at the time of the incident. Liquor bottles were found in the car.

As news of Praveen's death spread, auto rickshaw drivers gathered at the mortuary and condemned the incident, demanding strict action against the car driver.

MLA J R Lobo too visited the mortuary and listened to the concerns raised by the auto drivers, and also by Praveen's brothers.

Speaking to daijiworld, J R Lobo said, "The deceased person's family from Madikeri met me at the mortuary and I assured them all legal assistance. I have given instructions to officials to make all arrangements to transport the mortal remains to Madikeri for the final rites. Praveen's family should get insurance without any hurdle."

Commenting on the accident, he said, "Strict action should be taken against drunken and reckless driving. Innocents lose their lives in such accidents."

I read peoples comments ..... some are quite insane. One comment also stated that the driver should be hanged !!!!!

Most people who post comments over here demanding for strict action are hypocrites. If the driver was your family member most of you would have been finding a way to close the case.

Now... i see in the pictures that there are bottles of beer and breezer inside the car. So its probably rash driving that led to accident rather than drunk driving.

Now that there is an uproar regarding this incident, in some days every body will get on with their lives. The real truth is that we don't really value life. And this attitude shows how the laws are implemented. If the actual traffic laws are to be followed to a t, many of us would be breaking the laws. This is because we simply don't value life.

    Some examples,

We dont use child seat. (some may not even know what they are)
We refuse to wear helmets when riding two wheelers (Govt has to force this on us to wear it)
We dont wear seat belts (Govt has to force this on us to wear it)
We dont give way for pedestrians when crossing the road.
Jay walking( on city roads as well as highways!!!!)
No idea of what ''right of way'' means.
Our buses are without doors!!!! (people have died falling off... but still we dont care)
Driving licences seem to be issued just for holding the steering wheel.
Our roads not designed in a scientific way.

Is overtaking on both sides of the front vehicle legal?

It is illegal to overtake on hard shoulder. Hard shoulder is on the left for India. And it is also illegal for 2 wheelers, heavy vehicles and slow vehicles to ride /drive on the fast lane if there are more than 2 lanes in each direction. The inside lane is for fast moving vehicles and for overtaking. And that sadly, no one tells here in our country.

DRIVING IS A PRIVILEGE, NOT A RIGHT.

RIP Praveen. One valuable life lost simply because of a careless person.

Keeping Bar 500 meters away or 5 kms away from High way does not make any difference though! All we need to think about is "How to keep KUDIs away from wheels"

What is happening to our Mangaluru? This driver is Insane. He has to be hanged instead of life improvement . If it is the case of loosing control while normal driving then you can give life imprisonment. But this case has to be treated as rarest of rare and the guilty should be hanged till death as a lesson to all those who drink & drive and the victims families have to be compensated well .

    Right guidelines.
    in Bar or Car.
On a long drive must have a driver who does not drink on duty. Question of spilling could be avoided if Beer bottle is made use of.
Bar, you seem to be a right company. But no politics please.

    Mohammed,
There is a lot of benefits of drinking in a bar rather than inside a car.
Inside the car you can opt only for beer whereas in a bar you can have variety of drinks comfortably with finger food on the table. You will not spill your drink. You can have the glass in one hand and a cigarette in the other.

    Never drink and drive.
You are not only endangering your life and co passengers but also of third parties for no fault of theirs.
It might be so grave sometimes that you will repent for the life.
    This awareness has to spread.
Punishment for such offences should be based on the damages caused.
Suspending the license at least for an year might act as as a deterrent.

Police do nab drivers who have a few drinks even driving with families after a family or social gathering. Do the guests to hotels and bars do not they drink and drive, if a police patrol stands outside a bar and restaurant they can nab many drivers in one night itself. In the nights or late evening even a small kid will notice many cars and bikes parked outside a bar. The police should do a lot to avoid such accidents and impose a huge fine on the cases when the drivers consumed alcohol above permissible limit and drive.

Are you sure about your suggestion Prabhuji?
I do not know whether you consume alcohol or not; but I can say with 100% confidence that many of your friends and close family members do consume alcohol on a regular basis. Considering this fact, it wouldn’t take much of an effort for the police to get hold of at least one of your friends / family members on charges to drink-driving.
Would you still justify the death penalty for your friend / family member for this crime?

In addition to this, I have seen in buses, the bus drivers tell their friends or girls to sit in the front side seat near them and talk throughout the journey, which I feel is dangerous, since they cannot have full attention on driving. In the company where I worked, there was a board on buses near the driver "Do not talk to driver while the bus is in motion".

Why stop at only drink driving? Allow general public to take law on to their own hand for every other crime too. Why bother with police, judiciary and law? Just let every citizen to be a judge, jury, prosecutor and executioner. Then there would be perfect order in every street of India.
