Udupi, Jul 22: “The beat system, implemented from April 1 was started with an aim to bring down criminal activities in the district. The revamped beat system will certainly achieve that objective," said district superintendent of police (SP) T Balakrishna.

The district police department of Udupi in a meeting on Saturday, July 22 was discussing rural level beat system to maintain law and order on pilot project basis at Ammanni Ramanna hall, Udupi. SP was addressing the meeting.

"Further, It will build a better public relations. Earlier there were only five beat teams but we are planning to increase the teams as per the availability of police constables. Public can also approach these teams and inform them of criminal activities in their localities without any hesitation. The beat system has been implemented with all preparation and nearly 2000 constables are working in the district in them and 13 lac constables over the state,” SP added.

“No confidential issues will be leaked. Everything will be kept confidential. The beat system will certainly succeed in preventing criminal activities. It is a government’s revolutionary project,” SP said.

“The revised beat system aims to make police department as ‘Citizen Centric Policing’. Other objectives of this project is to empower police personnel by decentralization of policing, strengthen the community policing, connect to the community, making police force more effective and approachable to people.” he concluded.

Addressing the meeting, DySP Kumaraswamy said, “People should not give police complaints with any prejudice or bad intention. If the relationship is good between public and the police personnel, the number of criminal activities will reduce. The revised beat system will help to build confidence in people. The appointed constables will keep in close touch with the beat police for the exchange of information.”

Voicing his concern, social worker Vishu Shetty Ambalpady said, “Police play a crucial role in preventing communal issues too. Sometimes police officials are also reasons behind the rise of communal conflicts.”

Another member of Jaya Karnataka said, “We respect the police department, but there is difference of opinion within the department. That should be cleared first.”

Past CMC president Yuvaraj said, “There has to be a good bonding between police and the public. Only then the improved beat system will get its true meaning.”

Manipal head constable, Nethravathi, Manipal SI Sudarshan, IAS Probationary Puvitha, beat police constables Laxman, and Malpe station Barama Reddy were present among others.

    ''Citizen Centric Policing''
First, police should stop harassing common man.

''If the relationship is good between public and the police personnel, the number of criminal activities will reduce. ''
Police have completely failed in regards to clamping down on moral policing.

''The revised beat system will help to build confidence in people.''
    I seriously doubt that.

''The appointed constables will keep in close touch with the beat police for the exchange of information.”
What information??? Are police going to respond to a complaint that two consenting adult couple at the beach or at a coffee shop or a lodge??? If police takes any action on those couples.... police are failing at their job for protecting the individual liberty granted by the Constitution. What police must do is to reprimand people complaining about such things.

It would indeed be a good idea to public participation to work in conjunction with the police. That would indeed help. That apart the people of Udupi would have the satisfaction to be a part of the beat team.

More the corruption, lesser the beats. Ask how ? Because these corrupt politicians need more protection now. So the police are busy protecting them from angry public. Therefore shortage of personnel for beats.
