Mangaluru: Prisoners hold party inside city jail, photos go viral

Daijiworld Media Network-Mangaluru (RJP)

Mangaluru, Jul 19: Prisoners partying inside the city jail has become an issue since Tuesday in social media after photos went viral.

The episode shows that Mangaluru does not lag behind in prison matters after the news of AIDMK (Amma) leader Sasikala Natarajan allegedly getting preferential treatment at Parappana Agrahara jail in Bengaluru had become sensational recently.

Though getting outside food at the Mangaluru jail is not new, partying openly and photographing it, is a new development. It is believed that the food and liquor were brought with the help of jail authorities for this particular party.

Smuggling unauthorized goods inside Mangaluru jail including ganja, liquor and cigarettes, has been going on for many years. But jail authorities have always denied these charges, claiming them as just rumours. Whenever some goods were caught by them, they claimed that every time an attempt is made to smuggle goods inside, it was stopped. But the present photo circulated in social media gives a different picture altogether.

It is being discussed that the photos were taken by one of the prisoners and with the full knowledge of the people partying there. The intention to send them to others through social media was planned, some people say.

Mangaluru jail has seen many jailbreaks in the past. Twin murder of inmates also took place here in 2015. After complaints of security lapse, KISF service was introduced outside the gates.

The jail presently hosts a prisoner population of 425. It is said that the jail faces a shortage of twenty staff while the government rules say 40 staff are required for 250 inmates. 50 KISF personnel were supposed to guard the jail while only 24 are on payroll and only 18 of them are on duty presently.

Photo of alleged birthday party in Belagavi jail

Meanwhile a photo of a birthday party held inside Belagavi jail is also being circulated. But jail authorities said it is not a genuine photo.

Some years back, a big smuggler in Mumbai's Arthur Road jail, gave a party to inmates, because he got a son. Then it was found out, that from a long time, he was allowed to go home every night. This is the story in most of the jails in India, because money is the prime mover. In Mumbai's govt and municipal hospitals, agents provide drug, alcohol and woman, only one has to give money.

The imprisonment is the punishment granted/imposed by a court.

As can be seen, the people under question are in prison. They are going through the punishment.

But has the court said that no partying is allowed? In my opinion the court has not said so.

And the court has not said many things.

So if the prison inmates do things that are not illegal as per the punishment granted by the courts, how can the prison authorities impose additional punishments?

In my opinion the inmates should not receive additional punishments fron the prison authorities. If they indeed receive additional punishment, they have a right to seek justice through court.

What is the definition of jail? Or what is difference between five star hotel and jail? Tax payers money should not be spent for entertaining such criminals. Prisoners are there to serve a punishment and not for a picnic or parties. These criminals does mot deserve any concession whatsoever. Shame on our Govt and Police.

There isn't anything more tragic than this. Criminals who have committed wrong are supposed to suffer inside and realise their mistakes but most of the jails these days have become safe havens for such people. They are safe from their enemies, regular food, ganja etc easily available, mobiles and also smuggled in to chat with sweethearts and to run their illegal businesses outside, what mode do you need?

You know what's the worst thing about all this? It's all done in our hard earned tax payers money..!!
