Udupi: Suicide pact - Four of family end lives by consuming cyanide at Padubelle

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (RJP)

Udupi, Jul 13 : Four members of a family were found dead on Thursday, July 13 at a house in Padubelle near here.

Shankaracharya (51), his wife Nirmala (42) and their children Shruthi (24) and Shreya (21) are the deceased.

Shankaracharya owned Shreya Jewellers in Padubelle.

It is said that the four consumed cyanide to end lives. Reason for the suicides is yet to be known.

Sources said Shankaracharya had gone to Udupi to make some gold purchases on Wednesday. After that no one spotted him in Padubelle. On Thursday morning the neighbours discovered that all the members of the family had committed suicide.

It is gathered that Shankaracharya had made heavy business losses ten years back. But he had recovered gradually. In the recent days he had employed 15 goldsmiths at his house to make jewellery. But his business was not doing well in the recent past. His one daughter was supposed to get married and her engagement got cancelled due to a birth of a child in the bridegroom’s family.

Shirva police have registered a case.

I doubt that engagement got cancelled because of birth of a child in bridegroom's family. Birth of a child is something to celebrate & not to cancel some other thing which is also of celebration. It could be dowry issue, but I'm not sure. May their souls rest in peace.

shortage of anything is a curse and rarely a blessing. Curse can flow to four generations of a family if one of their ancestors has commmited sin or said lies or gossip or spread hatred ( like the fanatics nowasdays) so, pray the gayatri mantra that all have peaceful and decent ideas.

Suicide seems a guillable solution but God's plans are different, he wants his creation to pray and believe in him in times of adversity. Atleast one person in the family has to be very strong. In negative times avoid reading negative news, thinking negative probably counselling or speaking with another fellow member will help. May their soul rest in peace.

    RIP departed souls!!

If u r neck deep in debts from pvt moneylenders, they r going to hound u till they repayed! Even bank recovery agents do not show any mercy n employ services of musclemen to get back the loan!! They r ruthless, just want the money back!!

In such a situation, it is easy for people to give pep talks, but who on earth is going to help u out with that much Vitamin M?? On the contrary, when a person is financially broke, most relatives/friends distance themselves for obvious reasons!

Mr Rudy, I agree with your views, but there is a proverb in Kannada-"hasighe iddastu kalu chachu".

One should take loan if he has capacity to repay. Sometime it turns out vice versa. but it does not mean that one should commit suicide.

Here exact reason/position no one knows. But who all are in loneliness/depressed may take a clue from this incident.

This family may had some property/gold. They could have sold. But sorry to say, may be materialistic world took their life away.

Lastly-yes, to give advice/comment very easy (applies me as well) but when it comes to on us own, we realise how painful it is!!!!. So always we should pray to God, to keep us safe in happiness and sorrow.

    @Nancy,
    Today's economy is totally capitalistic!!
For whatever reason one becomes financially broke to the point of no return, in this materialistic world nobody is going to bail u out even if they have very deep pockets! Believe me, when u r in a financial bust, even ur close people will avoid u putting u in more depression!! There is no other way but quit!!

Incidentally, a very very high profile director of Tata Finance, who was once a blue eyed boy of Ratan Tata, committed suicide last week after he got embroiled in a 500 crores fund diversion issue during the Harshad crash for which he was trying to prove his innocence for decades, but ultimately buckled n decided to quit!!
Unless we come across similar situations, we will never know the gravity of the crisis!
I empathize with the deceased, may their souls RIP!!

Such a disturbing and sad news that four members of a family end their lives and the date to observe is:13th.... May their soul rest in peace.

Is this true that the number 13 is synonymous with bad luck? For some, it is considered unlucky to have 13 guests at a dinner party, many buildings don't have a 13th floor and most people avoid getting married or buying a house on a day marked by this dreaded number.

I am sure more such suicides will happen when Modi type of PM's do demonetization. People who have taken money to run a business or build a house from these Private lenders or Banks, will have severe problem arranging funds when demonetization has severely affected many businesses. I believe this is because of this one stupid PM. he may not do any corruption but his policies can create such damage and kill such many business people indirectly. PM is a prime murderer of this country with his policies.

Life is full of Ups and down. Negative thinking is matter of time. After a while everything looks normal. If depressed please go and talk to someone who is trustworthy and bring laugh on your face, console you, advice you.

Don't commit suicide. God takes care. One thing remember - don't bother about people- thinking what people will say? what people will think.

Here I do not know the exact reason but feels very sad to know that beautiful family ended life.

Take care guys one another. In this materialistic/ competitive world all are busy with owns life.

Come out from the cave, visit friends relative whenever time permits.

Don't forget to have prayerful life tooo.

May their soul rest in peace.

    Well said Nancy.
In addition, the neighbouring community people should get together and talk to each other in small comminities. It is very easy to take away your life but that not what you were created for. If the daughters would start working it would share the financial burden of parents. Marriage too does not guarantee sometimes happiness to the girl though parents feel marrying in times of distress is the only option left. Nowadays girls are equivalent to 10 sons. Don't get discouraged too early. As Gautam Buddha said in muddy waters you cannot search for clean water once the mud settles down you will be able to think properly. Keep praying for strength to tackle the problems. May their soul rest in peace.
