Mangaluru, Jul 12: Dakshina Kannada district, known as an education hub, houses many colleges and institutions. Mangalore Institute of Fire and Safety Engineering (MIFSE) is one of the well-known institutes which grooms aspiring professionals in fire and safety.

Safety is one of the important elements in every individual, but unfortunately everyone tends to take it lightly. When it comes to western countries, safety gets the top most priority. But, in a developing country like India, people are least bothered about safety measures. This triggered Ando Paul, a frequent visitor to western countries, to introduce courses related to fire and safety engineering.

Chairman Ando Paul who is spearheading MIFSE, started the institution, ten years ago in Mangaluru. Today, the institution has expanded all over Karnataka and Maharashtra with 16 branches of MIFSE.

While after Diploma, one can work as a safety officer, after the completion of HSE course, successful students can join as safety managers. During the course, students will be taught how to train employees.

Excellent Facilities for Students

Various courses offered at MIFSE are technicality based where students stress more on practical sessions. They train students on different methods of extinguishing fire. MIFSE has multimedia equipment with oral teaching as well as multimedia videos.

Taking a big step, the institution has introduced tabs for all students which contains study materials in the form of videos. Lecture videos of 400 hours are installed in the tab.

A new campus of MIFSE will be inaugurated at Adyar in September 2017. The campus consisting of 6 floors will have all ultramodern facilities with latest safety equipment installed in the building. Practical sessions for the students will be held at the new campus from January 2018 where students from all the centres will come for practical sessions for 10 days. Earlier practical sessions were conducted at the respective centres hiring open grounds.

Students at MIFSE are also given 24x7 online support, where students can log in to www.mifse.com using their own log in ID with passwords to avail schedule of their teaching with additional video teaching materials.

Distinguished Alumni

MIFSE has excellent campus placement facility. As many as 10,586 students have been placed in more than 300 national and international companies including Wipro, Accenture, Manipal Group, Canara group and others. Students placed in different companies earn a minimum of Rs 2.5 lac.

Two students Syril Mathew and Vinod MV have reached greater heights in their respective streams. Syril Mathew, a 2007 batch passout, has been placed as the safety officer at Hindustan Uniliver in Bengaluru where he earns up to Rs 46,000. Vinod M V, another student of the same batch, was first placed as a safety steward at Micron Electricals where he earned only Rs 4,250, but then climbed up to the position of senior HSE Advisor at Tecnicas Reunidas at Abu Dhabi where he earns up to Rs 1,70,000.

Chairman Speaks

Chairman Ando Paul says, "MIFSE has successfully completed 10 years. This is the only institute which is affiliated to three universities of Mangaluru, Bengaluru and Mysuru. It is hard for humans to survive without safety."

"Since our first batch in 2007, everyone is placed in good construction companies including MFAR and Shobha developers. City Centre mall started its construction in 2007, in which most of our students got placed as safety officers. We felt that fire and safety courses have a lot of demand and hence expanded our branches all over the state as well as in Maharashtra," says Ando Paul.

"Since Middle East countries follow safety norms very strictly, MIFSE's courses under Mangaluru, Bengaluru and Mysuru universities have more value than others. This is a huge advantage for us. MIFSE's ultimate goal is to have a University in safety. We have to reach that position to have an exclusive university," he adds.
