Udupi: Standoff between private, KSRTC buses - where it is headed?

By Harshini Brahmavar

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Jul 6: Private Bus Owners Association of the district has taken a defiant stand against operation of the government's ambitious scheme of running affordable and comfortable city buses under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). As their efforts were heading nowhere, Canara Bus Owners Association members also approached the state High Court and succeeded in securing stay order against operation of 55 JNNURM buses to which permits had been issued. In the bargain, the association has also earned the ire of district in-charge minister, Pramod Madhwaraj.

Because of this tug-of-war between the government and private bus operators and lack of coordination between the two, the JNNURM buses which the people of rural areas were eagerly awaiting, will not be able to operate for the present.

Madhwaraj flagging off JNNURM bus service on September 7 in 2016

As per the demand of the people, Pramod Madhwaraj had taken an initiative to introduce government buses to rural places which were facing shortage of transport. It is said that private buses started suffering losses in these sectors as government buses did not adhere to time tables strictly. Canara Bus Owners Association president, Rajavarma Ballal, claims that government buses are being unnecessarily run on routes which already have excessive number of buses.

Although the High Court stayed operation of these 55 government buses on June 28, the buses were operated till July 2, as the officials said they had not received official communication. Regional transport office symbolically seized four buses for violating law on Tuesday before releasing them, by way of warning. Still these buses continue to be operated in rural and city routes, which has come as a problem for private bus operators.

Major objection of the private bus operators is about buses that are being run by the government on Karkala, Shivamogga, Hebri, Shirva and Kundapur routes from the city, although there are many private buses already on these routes. The association strongly feels that these routes do not need to be served by the government.

The people in general have however come to appreciate government buses rather than private buses because of comfort and space. Some however say that these buses are not maintaining their timing properly.

Why everyone is complaining against private busses. If pvt.busses stop their service do any one know how much people loose their daily bread. Govt. Busses are started only some years before in districts before that for a long time pvt. Busses have catered you. Remember that. Though the pvt operators act harshly they are ready to help public at any time and at any cost. I have experienced this personally

Its high time the government nationalises all the routes from Puttur to Bhatkal to get rid of private bus menace and run equal number of government buses on these routes.Private bus mafia is creating havoc in our coastal area. Some of the things the private buses do:
    1.Reckless driving
    2.Rash behaviour
3.in respect of buses with permit to Manipal, they drop us at Udupi and say 'Ait pole' directing at city buses which are not available after 9pm
4.Even if one stone is thrown at Mangalore, all the private buses stop travelling to udupi ,thus harasding the daily commuters between mangalore and manipal.
These are a few of the ressons,we wsnt givt buses to run.But then, who is to bell the cat as,msjority of the buses are owned by MLA's and people with power!

Pvt Buses assume they own the roads, loud horns.
    They don't follow rules.
They enter streets where they have no permit.
Always in a hurry and if your in front of them, they honk as if its their right of way.
Totally rash driving (not all pvt buses but Majority)

    A menace!

Government, in general, does a terrible job in almost every field. Think of government hospitals, government schools, government airplanes etc. Government bus service should be no exception.
The government in general is very inefficient. The problem is, it is very hard to motivate government employees. For example, private companies can give bonuses if an employee performs well. Hard to do that with government employees. There is profit incentive for private - there is none for government.

So, in general, government should get out of service industries and stick to forming laws and enforcing the laws. If the existing laws are not adequate to ensure public safety, then make new laws and then enforce it strictly.
Private airplane companies operate so well. And there are aviation laws that government put in place. And airlines follow it so well. Why? Because there is good government enforcement.

For once Karnataka Govt and Minister Pramod Madhvaraj have done a great service to people.Excellent service.Lovel buses.Freindly staff.

Who are private owners to decide Govt need not run buses in these routes?.If it helps rural/poor people why not?If you give better service ?..Tomorow grocery shop Oweners might object to buying rice from Govt shops!!

How could High Court give stay on such a people friendly service?..Karnataka Govt should take these Pvt bus owners to task and continue the service.

These govt buses in Udupi are jus awesome. Other than private bus owners rest of the public are happy with this.
I travel in this bus through Udupi-Doddanagudde route and Udupi-Malpe route.

    Problems faced in Beach-Malpe-Udupi route:

->Most of the Private buses are cancelled on Sundays because less visitors visit the beach in the morning and we public end up waiting hours together
->And these private buses don't go from Ajjarkad - taluk office route on sunday because of less passengers. They take Bypass-Bannanje route. So we have to catch the same bus and again change the bus in Udupi inorder to go to Taluk office-Ajjarkad route.
->Once we pick the bus in beach they ask us to get down in Malpe and Pick the connecting buses in Malpe which is difficult for age old passengers.

When we wait for these private buses we feel that these buses are only meant for tourists who visit beach and not for the daily passengers.
All the Public in our place are just fed up with these private buses and we were so happy when these buses were introduced.
Request you to increase these Govt buses rather than cancelling it.

Recently I have travelled in KSRTC Volvo bus from Mangalore to . The condition of bus was very bad and unclean. Except AC other things lacked maintenance. From reliable source I came to know that the most of KSRTC Volvo buses running between Mangalore to Manipal are the condemned city buses of BMTC Bangalore.

Private bus MAFIA should be abolished since they do not provide tickets in Mangaluru, they are rude, the bus staff are arrogant and rude, uneducated and problem for senior citizens and women. The high court should not have stayed operation of these 55 government buses at Udupi, It is the peoples money used for the buses and for the people. The government buses are of the general public. The BUS MAFIA only cheat and fool the citizens of the twin districts.

The monopoly and the arrogance of the private bus operators needs to be broken in Udupi and neighbouring districts. I have personally travelled in the JNNURM operated between Udupi and some places, and they are fabulous. Private bus operators only have their profits in mind and are insensitive to the growing ageing community in the district. The government buses do have low floors and are convenient to elderly people and differently abled people as well. I am yet to see a private operator being sensitive to these needs of the community. More importantly, the private bus operators do not want to operate routes which are not very profitable to them and even if they do, they are erratic in their service standards. One such example is Udupi City Bus Station to Ananth Nagar and HUDCO Extension in Manipal (via Manipal Syndicate Circle), where the private operators just have limited services. The population who wish to use public transport there is burgeoning and government buses would simply fill the need..

    Private buses 'Matlabis' Fekus!
Few days before a lady was traveling from Suratkkal to Jeppu Monkey-stand,
while reaching the bus at Kankanady all passengers got down and driver and conductor told a lonely left lady bus will not go to Jeppu Monkey-stand and you get down.
See the flight of this private buses and their owners!

Finally message reached Kankanady police station,
Inspector came to the bus stand and asked Bus driver(captain) and conductor reach the lady till last stop since she purchased the ticket till end and he was sure these buses are FEKU-CHORE so he send a police escort vehicle behind bus toll the end.

    DO WE NEED THIS?

people should appeal to government .
we do not want private buses.
even private buses steps also very high
old men and women can not get in easily.
    stop this private buses,
    start government buses.

Few years back Mr.Ivan D'Souza was the president of Private Bus Association and this people not allowed to introduce Government Buses that time too.

    Toatally goondaraj in Karnataka.

If this Private Buses says excess busses running on the route, fine let them stop Private buses running on that route. Very simple, we public don't need these Killer busses.

Just take an example, during season (Peak time) Private busses increases 3 times more than the regular fare from Mangalore to Mumbai. No one is asking them nor any control over the ticket fare?

Mangalore Airport to Mangalore City Government introduced Volvo buses, this Private lobby forced them to stop. Government agreed???

It seems private bus service owners got a upper hand in Karnataka they went to high court and brought injunction order to stop running new government buses in udipi. why so far govt. is silence in this matter is surprising. they can bring ordinance and new rules for running govt. buses replacing private buses.

in Private buses. Display board shows State bank.. When we come from outside city... Reaching jyothi they suddenly announce. Every one get down here. We are not going to State bank. From Talapady side buses some time it stops at Pumpwell circle itself and passengers have to suffer with their luggage. If you new to city. God only save. No one controle private buses. If you travel mangalore to udupi or Mangalore to Moodbidri. Their speed. continuous horn sound.. In narrow road also they over take without giving value to life of common person. Only government buses is solution for this.
