Mangaluru: Showing scant respect to church mass, Christian outfit holds cow slaughter protest

Mangaluru, Jun 11: The Rashtriyavadi Kristara Vedike led by Franklin Monteiro on Sunday June 11 staged a protest against cow theft and slaughter in front of St Lawrence Church, Bondel, disturbing the Sunday mass that was going on in the church.

Addressing the protest, Franklin Monteiro said, "Cow slaughter should be banned with immediate effect. The people who are supporting slaughtering of cows are agents of slaughter houses and cow thieves' gangs. In India variety of food is available and I cannot understand why some want to stick to cow meat. Nobody wants to give their cows to slaughterhouses, so cows are being stolen from shed and being slaughtered illegally.

"So many cow theft incidents have been reported in the last few days in this area. We condemn this act. The thieves are being protected by some politicians. If this continues, we will force be forced to organise other methods of protest," he warned.

"As our organisation belongs to the Christian community, we decided to hold this protest with the support of a large number of community members. We met parish priest of Bondel Church but he denied us his support. Some community leaders are behind this. They are getting benefits from cow slaughtering shops and are behaving like their agents," he alleged.

He later distributed cows to three families whose cows had recently been allegedly stolen.

Rashtravadi Kristara Vedike leaders Adv Amruth Lal Joyce, Herald D Souza were protest.

Protest disturbs Sunday mass at Bondel church

Ironically, the organization which claims to 'represent' Christians held its protest at the same time when Sunday mass was going on, showing scant respect to the church. The protestors use loud speakers on high volume, disturbing the mass and hundreds of parishioners and devotees who had gathered.

In his his speech, Franklin Monteiro mentioned the parish priest and the community leaders several times, levelling all sorts of allegations against them. Also, a group devotees from Kerala were misguided by the protesters, who reportedly told them it was a church 'programme'. Later, on hearing the hymns, the group realized that it was the mass.

Kankanady rural police provided security for the protest. Some of the devotees questioned how the police could allow a protest take place in front of a church when mass was going, adding that it hurt their religious sentiments.

Speaking to daijiworld, Bondel parish priest Fr Andrew D'Souza said, "Cow theft has become an issue in our area, so the Rashtriyavadi Kristara Vedike held a protest in front of our church today. We are not against the protest, but against the fact that it was organised at the time of the mass and it disturbed the devotees. This is condemnable. Being a Christian organisation, they should have waited till the end of the mass, but they did not. They used the sound system in high volume and it hurt a lot of devotees. I cannot understand how the police could give permission for this protest at the time of mass. After the mass, a large number of devotees came to me and expressed their disappoint."

Expressing unhappiness regarding the protest, general secretary of district Congress and leader of Christian community Stany Alvares said, "An organisation called Rashtriyavadi Kristara Vedike held a protest in front of the church on cow theft and cow slaughter. It was creating invconvenience to hundreds of devotees present for the Sunday mass. It is unfortunate to note that the core belief of Christianity was disregarded by the protestors who claim to be part of a 'Christian organisation'.

"Everyone has the right to protest, but such freedom must not be misused, like clashing with others' rights to practice their religion. How did the police grant permission for a protest held in such close proximity to a place of worship? These protesters have violated the rule of maintaining adequate distance from the church while protesting. The volume of the sound system was jarring which disturbed the ongoing mass. It seems like some organisations are drawing political mileage from the cow debate. But it is an irony that people are not respected as much as cows. I will take up this matter with higher officials of the police department. Such blithe disregard for faith is condemnable," he said.

Rosaline, a devotee said, "I am a native of Udupi and residing in Mumbai. I came directly from Mumbai to offer special prayers at this church. But I could not concentrate during the mass because of the protest. The speech was too noisy and it disturbed me a lot. After the mass I came to know that the protesters were Christians. I do not question their right to protest, but who gave them the right to disturb others?"

Everyone has right to protest in a democratic country. You cannot call vedike protest as disturbance as even hindus are disturbed by mosque loudspeakers but they never complain or are allowed to complain. So going by that angle Vedike is not disturbing anyone with loudspeaker. If you feel that loudspeakers are a disturbance then all sorts of loudspeakers be it mosque, temple or church must be banned are you citizens ready for that??? If no then stuff cotton in your ears

It is so sad to see conflicts being "created" within our communities. This is not going to help our country and our society at all. If one analyses these conflicts and unrests happening over a few years, we can settle with one voice by saying, its all political. We used to live before with peace among different communities and hoping to have better education, health, culture and tolerance. Very sad to see these kind of incidents. If we continue to live in like this, how we can grow better as a nation ?

i think police would have cllaced and arrested them all for disturbing community prayers inside the church .

Hats of to Franklin Montero and the out fit for the great courage and protest for cow slaughter. I am sorry that church Mass got disturbed but there is no option. Because after the mass everyone will leave and what is the point in holding the protest when no one is left in Church to highlight the issue.
There are many of my Christian friends who do not eat Beef and Pork. They realise the sentiments of majority and the Motherly Holy Cow which has become part of the family for thousands of years. Also , all over the world people are worried about deadly diseases like cancer, mad cow, heart diseases (red meat) and constipation.
Monterey,We have full support for you and one day the Holy cow will unite the nation.

Whether this Franklin Monteiro protested against attacks by BJP and Sangh parivaar affiliates throughout India???

Whether this Franklin Monteiro protested the action of the central government to declare December 25th as good governance day denying holiday on Christmas??

Whether this Franklin Monteiro protested against the order by the Uttar Pradesh government cancelling the holiday granted to Good Friday???

Whether this Franklin Monteiro protested against the Gujarat government where Jesus Christ was mentioned as demon in Gujarat text books???

If Franklin Monteiro has given a statement that the catholic Church is benefited due to slaughter shop's then it's laughable.

Mr Franklin Monteiro has no right to create disturbance near a church that too on a Sunday which is the holiest day of the week for Christians. The parishioners should file a complaint against Franklin Monteiro for causing disturbance during mass.
Private property of the church cannot be used as a place for protest without the permission of the parish governing council and the parish priest.

However, I posted my comments against the drama by the betrayer in front of Church which you justify by calf stealing incident. Why should he force the Priest to support his protest ? Why should he disrupt the mass ? Would you agree and support anyone who will protest in front of your religious place disturbing the prayer or entering the religious place and forcing the priest to join the protest ? MY QUESTION TO YOU AND ALL THOSE COW PROTECTORS IS WHY THERE IS NO PROTEST AGAINST BEEF EXPORT ? Please, please reply this question. Moreover, I did not intend to hurt your feelings or the feelings of my Hindu brothers and sisters.

Question is not about eating beef or not, we all eat it but whats the issue in implementing law and order? Franklin and team shouldn't have had it while the mass is on that's a nuisance. (imagine the nuisance we have from various loud speakers !) . The entire issue is been twisted by political parties and confused the public. we need good slaughter house and we need good meet beef/cow /pork etc. for that illegal slaughter houses needs to be banned simple.
Its an internal matter and I believe Franklin and parish priest amicably.
To those who have asked if Franklin eat beef or not, its his personal choice and nothing wrong if he wish to get a good meet /meal beef or cow.

My friend, no one has any objection if you equate your cow to your mother, but my cow is not your mother. I am against illegal slaughter and cow theft, but you cannot take my right to eat what I want because of your sentiments and faith. Your faith is your business and my faith is my business. I do not have any right to tell you whom to worship and what to eat or what to wear and similarly you do not have a right to tell me these things. Please do not thrust your majoritarianism upon me. In India the minorities number more than 200 million, which is more than the population of entire Europe and also North America. Additionally there are millions of hindus who also consume beef. I have every right to eat what I please. The madness that you are preaching will surely finish off the cow population in India within the next decade as no farmer will be willing to rear cows. All this while a farmer used to buy a calf, rear it and then sell the cow to the butcher and with the money buy a new calf. The cycle used to go on. The current madness will put an end to it and farmers will only buy buffaloes in future.

That is exactly where parental and cultural upbringing values comes into the picture!!! I know so many Hindu families, including myself that we never went for Beef just because we are staying far off from motherland India or just because we earn in some dollars or Euro's.

When R.C. churches were attacked in Mangalore did he do any kind of protest ? Rather he was one of the accused in Hebron Pentecostal Church attack in 2012.

Most of the time you present yourself as well educated person, well dressed and fight for justice for Mangalore people, that is fine. But what is the basis for your fight ? is it religion / politics or genuine fight, If it is genuine fight then you need to be a rationalist first. Do not mix the things for your personal agenda.

How much you were paid to do this Drama ?

Just because somebody from your own community is doing such a noble deed is making you furious. Think about our Hindu sentiments being insulted and disgraced always in our own motherland in the name of secularism. Think how furious and frustrated we should be????

Stop saying our motherland. India belongs to every Indian and not just you. It is also my motherland. It is a secular nation with equal rights for all. I have no objection to your worshipping a cow, but don't try to thrust your faith and your views on me. If I consume beef it is my right to do so. If I steal your cow, it is a crime and I should be punished, but I can rear my own cows for my consumption. That is not your business.

Satya..., first reveal your real satya identity and later comment. In entire globe, India is only nation where Hindu predominants are suffering because of Minority voter banks. In any of the roman countries or Arabic countries we cant raise our voice. If it happens everybody knows what will be the reality. Only in India and only for we Hindus all these equality, constitutional and secular rights comes into the picture. So please stop teaching me and you mind your business.

Satya means truth and truth has no religion. India is a secular country and guarantees equal rights to all irrespective of caste creed or religion. Any citizen who follows another faith is no less Indian than you for your information. I am against caste based reservations in India and support reservations only for the economically backward people irrespective of caste, creed or religion. Caste based reservations have severely compromised the quality of education and services in our country. Do not say that Hindus do not have any rights in their own country. It is only the fundamentalist elements who feel that their rights are curtailed because they think that they are superior to others and that the country belongs only to them. They feel that they should be given the power to supress people of other faiths, encroach upon their religious practices, control their eating and clothing habits, decide whom they should meet with and marry and treat them as second class citizens. Thankfully the majority of people do not agree with these kind of skewed fascist views.

I find it amusing that all of the cattle slaughter protests get one cattle and they feed it to show how much they care about it. Feed ten cattle throughout the day, 365 days and then come and protest. Only then, I would consider credible. If you don't do this and then support a ban on cattle slaughter..... you don't have any credibility to say or do regarding this issue.
