Mangaluru: City to get desalination plant worth Rs 1500 crore

Mangaluru, Jun 1: In order to address the drinking water problem the city has been facing especially during summer time, the state government has decided to open a desalination plant with an outlay of Rs 1500 crore, revealed urban development minister Roshan Baig on Wednesday, May 31 in Periyapatna near Mysuru during a function.

Baig revealed that the project will be taken up under private participation and the capacity of the plant is 200 MLD of water purification per day.


Roshan Baig

Singapore, Dubai and several cities in the world, particularly in the Gulf region, get drinking water after desalination.

Desalination involves purification of water from the sea by removing salt content in it.

    I challenge anyone!!

    Plant more tress, Construct vented dams all over Coastal region (north/south) , will have natural fresh water for agriculture, industries and human consumption for life time.

    A life line river is diverted in the guise of providing drinking water to parched district. Total outlay is Rs.13,000 Crores. Now, desalinated water for Mangalore with an outlay of Rs.1500 Crores. Election is fast approaching. Funds are required to participate in this democratic process. Progressive society is blocking all sources of conventional means and steel flyover was scrapped at arm length. No options. Money spins money......!

    Our pure Netravathi natural drinking water thy diverted to Kolar & other districts and Govt makes us to drink salt water converted water for mangaloreans..... these projects are just to loot public money in the name of Big Projects

    If they divert the money going to spend for the statue of Shivaji, Maharashtra can solve the water scarcity by building at least 3 desalination plant. NO ADDITIONAL COST, JUST THEY HAVE TO STOP APPEASEMENT BUSINESS TO DO THIS.
    Two more desalination plants can be built if they divert the money going to spend for Patel statue in Gujarat.
    One more desalination plant can be built if BJP divert the money spent for 3 year celebration.

    Desalination plants are too cost prohibitive to run for a country like ours!

    Secondly, with so much of torrential rains water supply can easily be managed by conventional means!

    If a city like Mumbai, having 25x population, can sustain summer with lakes y not Mangluru??

    IMHO, this is the most foolish idea, waste of public money!!

    Now it is a lousy and corrupt project for all bhakts, but once the project is completed Mr. Modi will come and inaugurate it, take all credit and then it will a great achievement of the BJP.............Same as Aadhar, Swach Bharat, MNREGA, the longest bridge in Assam etc etc. The GDP has crashed after 3 years in power and all those tall and empty promises, but the blame is on the Congress.................

    Nandikoor Thermal Power Plant: Air pollution and heat to coastal area; other benefits to rest of Karnataka.
    Yettinahole Project: Natural disaster for western ghats: water benefits for rest of Karnataka.
    Desalination Plant: High concentrate of brine byproduct back to the sea: clean water to rest of Karnataka.

    It is a good taught to have desalination plant, for Mangalore city......First of all why do not the Government think of having a surge treatment plant for the city and treat the water, and can be supplied back in pipe line to all the apartments around the city, were it can be only used for Flushing and also for gardening, so that Fresh water is saved.

    Desalination plant to be made for and paid by industries only. Industries need to utilize this water during summer when there is water scarcity in dams. General public should not be made to pay for this plant

    VERY GOOD MOVE BY OUR CHIEF MINISTER...

    FAST GROWING CITY LIKE MANGLORE IT IS MOST NEEDED SINCE SO MANY NEW BUILDINGS IN MANGALORE FACE SHORTAGE OF WATER.

    AT LEAST WE CAN USE THIS DESALINATION WATER FOR CLEANING AND WASHING PURPOSE AS WELL FACTORY PURPOSE ALSO CAN BE USED.

    GREAT MOVE BY OUR SIDDARAMAYYA. AT LEAST OUR CHIEF MINISTER THINKS BEYOND COW AND COW DUNG.

    ALL GULF COUNTRIES USE DESALINATION WATER.

    Door for one more Scam.. Mangalore is blessed with sufficient timely rain but due to fast growing real estate business all Natural ponds are becoming sky scrapper maximum rain water is flowing to sea. Construct check dams, remove sludge from river bed, develop rain water harvesting, Educate people to clean open well and about water conservation.

    Desalination Plant is not required to Mangalore , We have enough rain,, ,.. we have many rivers, and dams ... .. If we can maintain these rivers and dams The water is enoungh till next generation,,,
    See the Bombay city .. how they are maintaining with dams water only... .... ...

    source of power is gas/ oil to fire boilers to convert salt water into steam and use the steam to run steam turbine to produce electricity and cool the steam to get pure water ...since you were proud that UAE is storing oil in mangalore and giving 1/3rd for free ..we can use that oil ..hope i have cleared your doubts ..

    Sir here the proposal is only for desalination plant for drinking / Potable water . No need of steam generation / running turbines and all as you mentioned . The Current technology uses Membrane based (MBR) to desalinate see water which just need electric power to run the high speed pumps to push the water through fine membrane filters and pass through other small chemical process to make it good for drinking process .

    That's the point. From where will we get that Power without damaging the Environment !. we are already having shortage of Power in the state. Either these people have to go begging to another state or to Adani's plant in Padubidri again for power ( by giving him more land for expansion) . He will burn more coal and sell it at huge rates to the state Govt. Then our great friend from Udupi above who wants burn Golibaje using Oil & Gas will start crying that this is another scam from Adani.

    Finally the Dongis reduced our Karnataka to a Desert that it needs De salination plant at the cost of environment for Water supply.

    Instead if they would have used the same funds for
    1. Planting & maintaining Trees
    2. Convert all the dried up bore wells in the state in public and private land to do Reverse boring of Rain water and improve the water table.
    3. Mandatory Rain water harvesting for all projects commercial & residential, with Govt aid and routine checking on the maintenance fo the same.
    4. Remove Silt from clogged up rivers, Lakes all over the state irrespective of state irrespective of state or private owned lands
    5. More check dams before the River water reaches seas and provision for reverse boring as the water reaches alarming level during monsoon.

    All these if the Govt had funded instead of a desalination plant and Bitti Anna Bhaagya, state would have been in the better position to face draught or excess water.

    have you seen any desalination plant ? it produces electricity too ..drinking water + electricity ..nationalism is spending 2600 crores to clean ganga ...3500 crores for shivaji statue and 2600 crores sardar statue ...and if govt spends 1500 crores to provide electricity and drinking water ..we have a problem ...

    In my pervious stint , I worked for a Company producing Valves to these de salination plants and district cooling facilities. Are you aware of the wastage outputs of desalination plants. Do you know what happens to the high salt content waste water (after boiling) when it is left back to the Sea ?? Do you know how it affects the marine life and environment ? . Electricity is not produced by once in a lifetime withdrawing 4000 rupees by standing in the line. In that 1500, I hope you may spare 500 by the time it reaches the proposed sight.

    One cannot compare the Gulf Model here. They have got the Liquid gold to power their compressors or turbines. Cost is less. We don’t have them. To generate power we have to burn coal. The outputs of both coal plant and Desalination plant will further affect climate changes in the region besides affecting human and marine lives. Population wise if you compare 2 taluks of DK, there would be more than total Population of Bahrain I believe. What I am trying to say is we or Govt can do more and have alternative methods to save water compared to expensive methods to generate such water at a huge cost to nature.
    On a lighter note, you can add one more side effects to our people. Mangalore will be Number 1 in the country for Highest rate of BALD Heads (Due to usage of Desalinated high chloride water) in future. Ask MLA Bava, he will explain.

    Have to agree with Vikas on this one. Coastal Karnataka doesn't need desalination plant for drinking water. There is a huge ongoing cost with desalination plant. There is huge environmental impact from the salt extracted and the salty water released back to the ocean. The drinking water problem in coastal karnataka can be solved by small projects as mentioned by vikas in his original post.

    We should'nt be doing something just because gulf states have done it for years. In the gulf they have limited access to potable water, so they have to depend on desalination. we have plenty rain and we should be focusing on storing the water during monsoon and using it during summer.

    This looks like an election year gimmick, which'll never get completed - just like the announcement by Nalin Kateel about BLR-MLR highway at 1.5 Lakh Crore - give me a break.

    Any project needs to think about is it financially sustainable on an on-going basis. If we build a 1500 Cr desalination plant, you may end up paying 10 times the water bill to make the project break even financially.

    ..another loot maar scheme..if yettinahole stopped, ponds/lakes rejuvenated and builder mafia stopped from landfilling agricultural lands, then DK wont have any water problem..these politicians mint money in both project..look at the cost of the project..they know Bangalore citizen has the courage stopped steel bridge worth thousand crores, but DK people dont have that..

    Here in our state it doesn't rain like in India and there are not many lakes or rivers, so water melted from ice from the north is brought using canals, tunnels & pipelines to the south over a distance of 700 miles.

    We have many river and rivulets in our district .
    If the water from these rivers is properly utilized then there is no problem of water .

    As long as you have stupid politicians , this problem will remain .

    Its sad to hear our city ,a tropical area with abundant rain, and rivers has the been selected to have a desalination plant .But when we see experience the summer water shortages looks like we are having no other choice. Nobody is aggressively promoting rain water harvesting and afforestation ...or any other natural way,.this is the road of our future.

    An i am sure in the name of mangalore desalination plant project water will be supplied to Bangalore.

    If you have 2 to 3 small check dams in netravati river then water problem can be permanently solved .
    Desalination plant for Mangalore is a worst idea. It needs 500mw power. Power can be used for some other purpose.
    If desalination project becomes reality then it is our past karma..
