Bantwal: Clash erupts in Youth Congress again as supporters clash during elections

Bantwal, May 15: Trouble erupted in district Youth Congress once again on Monday May 15, with supporters of the two strong aspirants for the Youth Congress president's post clashing in front of Bantwal Congress office here. The incident took place during the election to the post.

The incident comes days after a similar quarrel erupted in the Youth Congress office at Mallikatta in Mangaluru, wherein aspirant Luqman was injured.

On Monday, even as the proceedings for the election were on, supporters of the two aspirants Mithun Rai and Luqman started quarrelling on the issue of membership to the Youth Congress. The quarrel soon snowballed into a full-fledged fight and a tense atmosphere prevailed at the spot for sometime.

As many as eight persons sustained injuries in the incident and underwent treatment at a hospital as outpatients.

Hundreds of party workers gathered at the spot. As the situation threatened to worsen, party leaders tried to pacify the two groups of supporters, but they were not convinced.

On receiving information, Bantwal town as well as rural police arrived at the spot and brought the situation under control.

Due to the incident, traffic in front of the Congress office was affected for sometime. The road was closed to allow election proceedings. Vehicular movement was restored later in the day. The police led by DySP Raveesh provided tight security and higher police officials also arrived at the spot.

The elections for the post of Dakshina Kannada Youth Congress president's post and Bantwal taluk Youth Congress president were finally held.

Election to the post of the youth Congress district president and office bearers is being held between May 14 and 17 in eight assembly constituencies. On May 14, election was held at the Mangaluru north, and Beltangady, Bantwal and Sullia on May 15, Mangaluru and Puttur on May 16, and Mangaluru south and Moodbidri constituencies on the last day. Results will be announced on May 18.
