Kasargod, May 13: In a shocking incident, seven persons of a family from Mandekapu, Kayyar here died in a ghastly accident in Tamil Nadu in the wee hours of Saturday May 13.

As per the latest information in the ghastly accident that claimed seven lives, all from a family, it is learnt that Preema, the newly-married lady who was said to have died, survived the accident but has sustained injuries.

According to family sources, the deceased are Allwyn Monteiro (29), his brothers Herald Monteiro (50) and Sathurine Monteiro (37), Herald's wife Precilla (42), Allwyn's sister-in-law Reema (35) and their son Rohit (22), and Sathurine's daughter Sharon (5).

Initially, reports emerged that both Allwyn and Preema had lost their lives in the accident. It has now been confirmed to daijiworld that Preema has survived.

Sathurine's wife Jhosma (26), younger daughter Shanvi (1.5 years), Preema (25), and Rohit's brother Roshan sustained injuries and have been admitted to hospital in Trichy.

As reported earlier, Allwyn and Preema had got married only a week ago on May 6. After the wedding, on Thursday May 11, eleven persons of the family went to Velankanni pilgrim centre by a Scorpio car. On the way back early on May 13, a lorry smashed into the car, killing the seven on the spot and injuring the others.

The family was trapped in the mangled car and locals, police and fire service personnel brought them out.

The relatives of the deceased left for Karur soon after they received the tragic news on Saturday morning.

Deceased Herald was working in Pune and had been living there for the past 25 years. Sathurine was employed in the Gulf and had come for brother Allwyn's wedding on May 6. Allwyn was also employed in the Gulf.

Allwyn's widow Preema is a teacher in Lucknow. She is the daughter of Nerol Paul Rodrigues of Dharmatadka.

The mortal remains will be brought to Kasargod on Monday May 15 and funeral will be held at Kayyar Church at 3.30 pm the same day.

Kerala chief minister Pinrayi Vijayan said that the Tamil Nadu government would be requested to make arrangements to send the bodies by ambulance.

The Tamil Nadu government will also take care of the hospital bills and other related expenses of the injured victims.

The CM also said that he has directed the Kerala police to contact the authorities in Tamil Nadu and take necessary steps.

Allwyn's brother Denzil saved by fate

Allwyn's another brother Denzil Monteiro was also supposed to accompany the family to Velankanni, but due to lack of space in the vehicle, the plans changed at the last minute and he stayed behind in Kayyar. His wife Reema, however, died in the accident.

Very tragic accident; RIP those deceased, best wishes for those who survived, n heartfelt condolences to the bereaved fly!

Most horrific accidents take place during the wee hours, hence driving should be compulsorily avoided in the night!!

One observation I have made is most such ghastly accidents, wiping out entire families, occur mostly while proceeding or returning to/from a very holy/ religious place where devotees have greatest faith in the presiding deities??

Read some amazing comments here. While road safety is a responsibility of all people also should behave responsibly

    1. Why should we take the 11 people in a car which has a capacity of 5

    2. Why should permit be given to somebody who drives 11 people in his car.

    3. This car definitely crossed state boarders and toll booths so where where the police or authorities asleep yo see such a packed car

    4. Why don't such ghastly accidents happen on a daily basis in other parts of the world

    5. Where is the road safety and safely driving brigade now?

    6. Why do we wake up for a few days after such a horrible accident and then wait for the next one to happen.

    7. Why do we not think that it could be and my family next when we stuff our own cars with loved ones, even for short trips.

    8. What is the gaurentee that traveling by bus will nit produce something similar. Maybe the thought is that the bus might hit somebody else or maybe it's ok that it was not this family but some other family. Drivers are humans and same irrespective of bus or taxi

    9. Has anybody tried to get to Velankanni or some parts of TN by bus or train. Have you experienced the journey in India! Do you know how tough it is if u have kids and poor toilets and sanitation. Finally has anybody evaluated connectivity..... it's easy to talk once someth Ng has happened

    10. Like I said it's a collective responsibility to make roads safe and drivable from the driver, to the passenger, the pedestrian, to the RTO, to the municipality to the Government.

I feel sorry for the families of these people who have been left behind as the burden and pain is greatest for them.

    Rest In Peace !

    Happy and safe motoring all!

Very sad news. 11 members in a car are too many passengers. Government must limit number of passengers in any vehicle depending upon size of the vehicle. For a ling trip like this one travelers should opt for bus services, than driving long distance on unfamiliar roads.

If i am not mistaken, the car mentioned above is actually a scorpio vehicle and it mentions 11 people were traveling in it. Please be sensible enough not to cramp many people above capacity of vehicle. This also adds to the danger and may cause accidents. Please dont use cars when traveling long distances especially at night on highways. Pray to give peace to the departed souls.

Very sad and unfortunate. It's time people and the Authorities learn from their mistakes. The Proverb rightly says " Speed thrills, but kills". Not necessary the situation here is speed, even a slight doze can result in catastrophy. The driver needs to always remeber that it's his responsibility and he is the gaurdian at that moment. If sleepy, park and take rest. You may only reach your destination a bit late but atleast alive. We blame the Authorities for bad roads, not necessary that accidents happens due to bad road always. One should understand that Bad roads means drive slow. Yes, the pot holes needs to be addressed. There should be 2 lanes on each side with a barrier in between. The Pole should be lit up. If not atleast mark roads with reflectors.
Drivers should remember that they may be experienced, but sometimes its beyond our capacity. Simple thing is leave early and drive slowly. The joy of driving slowly is much better than pumping heart beats.
We were traveling from Bangalore to Mangalore few days back and we are happy that we are still alive. There was a Truck overtaking a bus even knowing that a car is on the opposite direction (that's us) in Ghat. We were drifted to rhe very side off the road. Glad we were slow. Unfortunately we couldn't collect any info on the truck since there were vehicles behind us and also we were in a state of shock to even respond.
I would like to advise my fellow drivers as to remain in your lane if there is a blind spot. Never overtake in a hurry. Never overtake during turns no matter what. It takes only few seconds and then you can overtake easily. Don't be over confident. Never lose patience if someone ahead doesn't allow you to overtake, it leads to road rage. Remember he may have his own reasons or the driver isn't experienced. Remain behind the vehicle and when you feel you are ready, move ahead. Remeber, a vehicle infront of you is a like a barrier or a safety shield, it guides you and sgiws you the way. Good luck!
