Bhatkal: 2 teen students drown at Kumta beach, locals save 3 others

Bhatkal, May 11: In a tragic incident that took place at Kumta beach, 2 students died and 3 were rescued by locals on the late evening of Wednesday, May 10.

Prajwal (19) and Francis Braganza (18) are the deceased students.

Students from Haliyal had come to Kumta beach on picnic. When they were taking bath in the sea, 5 of them were seen sinking in water. Locals rushed and saved three of them while 2 students died.

The dead bodies are yet to be recovered.

Police have registered a case.

    I had been to Kumta beach on the same day around 5.30 pm on the same day just moments after the dreadful incident took place. Lets not fight over what eventually caused this ''avoidable'' incident. Partly I agree with Mr. Saldanha that youths (current generation ) enter the water without taking proper care /due diligence and often ignore warning from locals when they are cautioned about high/low tides. Of course the harshness would have been avoidable taking into account the snuffing out of young lives and the trauma caused to their families and friends. Peace .....

    Very sad incident. What a young age to die. May God give strength and courage to their Parents/Family members/Near and Dear ones to bear this Loss.

    Mr. Saldanha, you first learn to empathise in such a situation. Death does not tell us in advance. It can come to you or me even if we know swimming. Do not be so harsh with your comments. Why are you so critical and negative with all your comment's? Do not be a sadist and take pleasure in other's sorrow. Sometimes the words we speak out comes back and bites us. If at all the close friend's or relatives of the deceased read your comments how would they feel? Have you thought about it? Leave alone that one! Step yourself in their shoes and think for yourself, how would you feel? Do not judge people with your half knowledge! How sure are you that they do know to swim? Think from your heart in such situations and stop being rude to people with your rude comments!!

    Dear Cynthi,
    It is quite obvious they didn't know swimming but still ventured in the deep sea. This is not the first time this has happened. Hundreds of children have died in these waters & still no one is listening. Second is reckless driving & killing people. By just grieving & sympathizing these instances are not going to stop. Someone has to bell the cat. I do not mind being rude & showing people their places. This is what I am & I will continue till this does not come to an end. Today I have penned so many words after a long time. Have a nice day …

    Dear Sir,
    Neither the deceased nor their parents can read your comments or advice. The real background of the incident will come out may be after diligent inquiry by the concerned authorities. The fact, as I heard, is that a number of youth, belonging to a parochial youth group of Haliyal came on picnic; they went to Murdeshwar beach, which is dangerous than at Vannalli. From there they went to Vannalli, which is considered to be safe even for children under supervision. However, it was low tide, and there was pre-monsoon thunderstorm previous day, which these youth were not aware of, and these youth from ghat section do not know the danger of Low Tide Sea, they must have thought low tide means less water and more safety. Even before all could alight from the vehicles, they ran and ventured in to the water even before the local people could warn them. Of the five youth, who went down, three were rescued by the locals as the reports say, but two unfortunate ones were caught up in the treacherous currents and perished. Let us be sympathetic and empathetic and not pass premature judgment without knowing the facts. It is easy to judge from hindsight without knowing the real facts. May their souls rest in peace. R.I.P.

    You are not born in this world to judge. Stop thinking that you are perfect. Again I ask you the same question - How sure are you that they did not know swimming?
    If you want to really fight for justice, go and save the rape victims. Go and save poor people who are on streets without food, water and clothing. Go and save this planrt earth.
    You have no right whatsoever to pass your foolish judgements and think that you are doing a great job.
