Mangaluru, Apr 30: Famous people’s priest and progressive poet of yesteryears Fr Vitus Prabhudas passed away on Sunday, April 30.

Fr Prabhudas was 76. He had recently celebrated golden jubilee as a clergyman.

Born in Siddakatte in 1941, Fr Prabhudas joined Capuchin congregation to become a priest after his initial studies. All throughout his profession, he lived a simple life and was hailed as people’s priest.

He was also a diploma holder in journalism. He worked as editor of 'Sevak' Konkani monthly and was Superior at St Ann’s Friary for several years during his stay in Mangaluru. He was also the president of Konkani Natak Sabha where he brought in revolutionary changes.

As a renowned Konkani poet, he chose the progressive path in his poems. ‘Sheth Bangrallem’ was one of his famous Konkani poem collections which became an instant hit. Love of nature and special concern for the downtrodden could be seen in his literature.

Fr Prabhudas was also a Konkani activist. He was the founding member of Konkani Basha Mandal.

Famous Konkani singer late P H Pinto was Fr Prabhudas' brother.

He lived at St Ann’s Friary during his last days.

Mortal remains will be brought to St Anne's Friary, Jail Road, Mangaluru on Tuesday May 2, for the public to pay last respects between 1.30 pm and 2.30 pm.

Thereafter, the mortal remains will be taken to St Fedelis Friary, Monte Mariano, Farangipet, for the funeral Mass at 3.30 pm.
