Mangaluru, Apr 10: The sessions court here on Monday April 10 announced its verdict relating to a case of suspected terrorist activity pertaining to the year 2008.
The court convicted three and acquitted four accused in the case.
Convicted persons are, Syed Mohammed Naushad (25), a resident of Subhash Nagar, Ahmed Bawa (33), a resident of Haleangady, and Fakir Ahmed Bawa (46), a resident of Uchila.
The quantum of punishment will be pronounced on April 12.
Four, namely Mohammed Ali (45) resident of Ullal, his son Javed Ali (20), Mohammed Rafiq (26) resident of Bantwal, Moulana Shabbir Bhatkal have been acquitted in the case by judge of the third district and sessions court, Pushpanjali.
Three of the accused namely Riyaz Bhatkal (35), Iqbal Bhatkal (35) and Mudassir Yasin (27) are still absconding.
In the said case of suspected terrorist activity, charge sheet was filed against a total of 13 persons. Apart from the seven named herein, the others included in it were of Riyaz Bhatkal, Iqbal Bhatkal, Mudassir Yaseen of Gujarat origin and staying at Subhas Nagar here, Qayamuddin Sharfuddin Kapadia alias Moosa from Vadodara, Muhammed Iqbal lsmail Choudhury alias Sayeed from Maharashtra and Ahmed Yaseen Bhatkal.
In a joint raid conducted on the morning of October 3, 2008, police personnel from the city and Mumbai, working with the assistance of Anti Naxal Force of Karnataka, had arrested Mohammed Ali and his son, Jawed Ali, from Mukkacheri, Ullal. On the basis of information provided by them, rented house of Riyaz Bhatkal at Chembugudde was raided but Riyaz, who came to know in advance about the impending raid, had escaped from there. During raids at Subhas Nagar and other places, Fakir Ahmed Shabbir Maulana, Muhammed Rafiq, Ahmed Bava alias Abubakker, and Syed Muhammed, were arrested. Out of seven arrested persons, four were released on bail in course of time. The bail plea of Shabbir was rejected by the court.
During these raids, five bombs, Rs 11.39 lac in cash, a motor bike, map of Gujarat, mobile phone set, several sim cards, Jihad literature, laptop, hard disk, four passports and other things had been seized from the arrested accused.
Over a hundred police personnel, under the guidance of the then inspector general of police, A M Prasad, and Dakshina Kannada district superintendent of police, Satish Kumar, had guided the operations. The then district crime intelligence bureau inspector, Dr H N Venkatesh Prasanna, had registered the case, while Ullal police sub-inspector, Shjivaprakash, had conducted preliminary inquiry. Further investigation was conducted by the then Panambur deputy superintendent of police, Jayant V Shetty, who also filed charge sheet in the court.
Public prosecutor, Narayan Sherigar, presented the case on behalf of the prosecution.
