Udupi: DC forms special committee to curb illegal sand mining, issues directives

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (EP)

Udupi, Apr 6: “A committee including the police has been formed to prevent illegal sand mining, do away with illegal sheds on the banks of lake and basic facilities connected to it,” said deputy commissioner (DC) Priyanka Mary Francis on Wednesday, April 5.

“I have passed orders to dismantle sheds erected for illegal sand mining and a time based committee has been set up to conduct raids involving police from Kundapur, Brahmavar and Byndoor,” she added.

DC was speaking in a meeting held at DC’s Court Hall to decide on prevention of illegal sand mining and transport. She ordered the officials to demolish boats and dredging machines using cranes and to work hand in hand with the concerned department.

DC stressed that strict action will be taken under CRPC section 144 and legal action will be taken for prevention of sand mining.

She also ordered for action under CRPC sections 110 and 107. “There is no provision for storing sand even in Patta land. Issue notices to those who store it. Let law be followed without giving room for breach of law,” she said.

“Verify the permit of lorries in instances when sand comes from outside the state. Conduct your duty on war footing”, she instructed.

Superintendent of police P K T Balakrishna, who was present in the meeting, said that the police department is prepared to extend all the necessary cooperation. “A squad has been formed and it should conduct the duties properly. A special team has been formed in Kundapur to defeat the sand mafia”, he said.

“There is no scope to only impose fine on sand lorries. Take action to cancel their permit,” DC said.

“PWD, KRIDL and Nirmithi will extend all support to prevent sand mining. The departments of geology, PWD and KRIDL are preparing to provide sand for the people in the district. A total of 60,000 tonnes of sand is available for construction work in the district. The requests for sand can be submitted to the assistant executive engineer at PWD, senior geology scientist, and executive engineer at KRIDL, Manipal,” she explained.

“Make sure that lorries transporting sand are installed GPS and record the work of staff at check posts through cameras. The quality of sand available in the department is of high quality”, she said.

Additional deputy commissioner Anuradha, assistant commissioner Shilpa Nag, all Tahsildars, ACF Achappa and officials of the department of geology were present.

Why need to ban on sand mining.
As government has put on ban for sand mining there is no water in river and lake. You can see dried rivers and locals cannot fish also.
Unfortunate foolish decision on it just to make money nothing else.
Only thing transporting to other districts should be banned thats all

We do not want to do any thing in the right way. We are crocked and break laws to gain more. But in the long run it will cause problems and bad effects for all. By wrong means we never attain the right development. Let all of us abide by the law and adopt a right way of life in all walks of our life. Then only life will be smooth for each and every one of us. Otherwise the effects of bad nature will be always bad. Thank you and God bless each and every one of us.

If DC really wants to curb illegal sand mining.... then issue a blanket ban on all construction activities. If this is done then illegal sand mining will stop.

Also has anyone checked which officials are benefiting from this illegal sand mining crusade?

Clean your department first, the expression of people sitting around you tells something else. Eradicate corruption from the department people and instruct your special committee to keep vigilance over your officers.

    Do you know the Truth,?
Within last two years 6 DC's changed in Udupi district???

Why?? Anyone not protested against the transfers or why not supported the Non-corrupt DC's?

The reason is, there are some Hidden Hands behind this Sand Mafia, Political support for the Sand miners. So, I am sure another Transfer letter is under process & delivered soon to Ms. Priyanka madam .

God Bless her. If you stop corruption, we the people living in the society should change our mentality.

I agree with Shirish Kumar. Due to corrupt officials sand mining was happening in full swing. However, due to assault on the present DC eyes have opened of government officials.

Sand was mined from our plot in Coondapur. When we complained to the Officials nobody responded. Now time has come to respond due to the assault on the DC.

It is a wake up call for Govt. Officiasl to take strict action against the sand miners.

For people who do not know the uses of sand:

Fine silver sand is used in making of various types of glass which are exported.
Other sand is used in construction.
