Won't release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, says Karnataka

Bengaluru, Mar 24 (PTI): Bengaluru: Karnataka today said there is no question of releasing Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu in line with the Supreme Court's directive as the state itself is facing a shortage of drinking water.

"There is no water for drinking purposes. If we had water we could have released. We have 3-4 tmc ft shortage to provide drinking water to Bengaluru, Mysuru and surrounding villages. Therefore, there is no question of releasing water," Water Resources Minister M B Patil told PTI.

He was replying to a question on whether the state will release water to Tamil Nadu in the backdrop of the apex court directive.

Patil said the Karnataka government had also mentioned this before the apex court and that the state's legal team was working on the matter. "There will not be any meeting (with the legal team) per se as of now," he said.

This is the second time in a year that Karnataka is defying the top court.

In October, the Karnataka government, backed by a state assembly resolution, refused to release water to Tamil Nadu in compliance with the Supreme Court directives to release 6000 cusecs of water for 6 days. But the state government gave in after the court rebuked the authorities and the state's lawyers advised it not to push it luck.

Karnataka is facing an acute water crisis, with its reservoirs 37 per cent short of capacity. But Tamil Nadu has a much more severe problem, with reservoirs in the state 80 per cent deficient.

Despite strong objections from senior counsel Fali Nariman, the Supreme Court on Tuesday directed Karnataka to continue the release of 2,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu till final orders are passed in the batch of appeals challenging the award of the Cauvery River Water Tribunal.

In logical sense Karnataka itself is facing acute water shortage. It reasonable to deny water to downstream when people around the basin facing the crisis.

Supreme court ruling should based on the annual rainfall. Instead of directing Karnataka to release water every time, the court should ask Tamil Nadu government for water conservation, rain harvest etc

During the rule of the Adil Shahi kings in Bijapur traditional water conservation structures called as the bavdis, which were the main source of water .Three are the current deplorable situation of the Bavadis are another term for a well. There are more than 1000 lakes in Bangalore use to supply water for the city once. Now lakes being filled for real estates. Once water canal constructed during Tipu Sultan is now carrying the sewage. Rivers running parallel to the industrial town became direct dumping ground.

When Middle East and South America is adopting to conventional method of conservation, India is letting the water flow to the sea without charging the ground. Hyderal project are hardly serving the nation present requirements.A countries like Peru is harvesting the mist with nest for agriculture requirement.

Water is the basic necessity of every living. Some countries are blessed with rain God but some not.
Tamil Nadu need more water conservation effort and rejuvenate its water bodies. When aride Bijapur sultan can feed its kingdom without modern technology why can't we do?

It is collective effort of every individual. This unethical, unscientific practice of Supreme court under the political influence is condemnable.

TAMILNADUS SHOULD DO CLOUD SEEDING AS THEY DID IN UAÉ FOR RAIN.

NO NEED FOR TO WAIT FOR KARNATAKA WATER TO RELEASE

.BY DOING CLOUD SEEDING. U CAN GET PLENTY OF RAIN WATER. THATS ENOUGH.

INDIAN TECHNOLOGY IS FAR BEHIND THAN UAÉ. MODIJI ONLY FAKING.

There are so many Tamilians using Cauvery water in Karnataka state, that I think is more than the SC order to release to Tamil Nadu. Bengaluru and surrounding areas will face severe water shortage in-spite of not releasing water to Tamil Nadu. The concerned should take serious measure to overcome this crisis. Else there might be a big exodus.
