The accused allegedly had kidnapped Monu alias Razack (30) residing near Kambalabettu Dargah with the help of two others before demanding ransom of two lac rupees in exchange for the release of the abducted person.

The arrested accused has been identified as Haneef alias Jogi Haneef (36), resident of Kukkebettu in Kepu village, who happens to be a ganja addict, and who had been arrested by the police sometime back when selling ganja. He had succeeded in securing his release within a few days of his arrest. Two others sucessfully escaped just before the police action.

It is said that Haneef had abducted Monu on March 19 afternoon with the help of two others by initially enticing Monu with sweet words and then pushing him inside a waiting car, because of a preexisting enmity. The trio was accused of snatching away Rs 10,000 Monu had with him, and then calling his family over phone demanding payment of two lac rupees in exchange for the release of Monu. In the meanwhile, Monu was inflicted with injuries by piercing him with sharp weapons.

After the police gave the abductors a hot chase, the abductors had abandoned car with Monu in a deserted spot at Deralakatte before disappearing in hilly terrain. Razack was admitted into a private hospital at Deralkaatte for treatment. A case was registered in Vittal police station.

After getting information that Jogi Haneef was waiting near Kodapadavu bus stand, a team comprising Bantwal circle inspector, Manjaiah, and Vittal station house officer, Nagaraj, acting under the guidance of district superintendent of police, Bhushan G Borase and additional superintendent of police, Vedamurty, raided the spot and arrested Haneef. A cellphone, Rs 4,000 in cash and lethal weapons were recovered from Haneef on this occasion.
