Bengaluru: Health hazard - State government plans to ban use of Ajinomoto

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Mar 21: Considering health hazards posed by Ajinomoto, which is also known by the name, monosodium glutamate (MSG), the state government is planning to ban use of this flavour enhancer, which is mainly used by Chinese food outlets and hotels. The government is contemplating to impose blanket ban on the use of this compound, which is famously known as tasting powder, as it is being used indiscriminately and has serious affects on health of people.

Ajinomoto is mainly used in Gobi Manchurian, Fried Rice, Salad Dressing, Sauce, Soups, and many junk foods. Health experts have often come up with advice to ban use of this chemical compound. The government now intends to take this advice and move ahead in all seriousness to implement their recommendation.

Replying to a question raised at the legislative council session on Monday March 20 by BJP councillor, Ramachandra Gowda, minister, Ramesh Kumar, said that monosodium glutamate is being used in Chinese restaurants and roadside eateries for enhancing taste and flavour. He said that the government is seriously considering the practicability of banning its use in view of the health problems it creates in case of excess use.

The minister said that this compound is permitted to be used when following proper manufacturing methods. "It is therefore easily available in the market. But health department officials have not been studying about the side affects of its excessive use. We will table a report about in the house. The government does not dither in the matter of banning it if it is in the interests of the consumers," the minister clarified.

MSG disrupts brain chemicals because it breaks down into glutamate, which is an important chemical messenger in your brain. Too much of any particular neurotransmitter can become an “excitotoxin” and over-excite cells to the point of damage, according to the book “General and Systematic Pathology.” Too much glutamate in the brain leads to various enzymatic cascades that result in neuron death. This may explain why many symptoms reported from MSG consumption are neurological in nature.

    Sir,

People with lowest levels of marks join the no-stress degrees of being a nutritionist. No science. But plenty of old wives tales.

But nutritionists, with their little or no science, thrive in writing eye-popping articles to the newspapers and the websites.

Does govt bother to check the pesticide content in the milk?
Or does it bother to check the pesticide content in the vegetables and fruits that are being sold in the markets?

No. It thinking of banning MSG. There are no studies showing that it is fit for human consumption. So how are they going to justify ban on it?

I find it amusing that people think only Pepsi and coca cola are bad. What about all the local soft drinks?
KFC, Macdonalds and other western fast food companies are always targeted, but what about all our local fast foods?

Now coming back to Pepsi and Coke. They are bad for health. Thats because they contain too much sugar(and not because they dissolve you teeth). Now.... if they are banned for this reason.... why should all our local sweets should be allowed to be sold?

MSG an even aspartame should be banned! MSG is an excitotoxin, which means it overexcites your cells to the point of damage or death, causing brain damage to varying degrees, and potentially even triggering or worsening learning disabilities
Common adverse effects linked to regular consumption of MSG, include: obesity, eye damage, headaches, fatigue and disorientation, depression, rapid heartbeat, tingling and numbness...

Do not blindly believe in FDA as they r actually controlled by large corporations n the invincible pharma cartel!!!

The minister and the so-called "health experts who have often come up with advice to ban use of this chemical compound" are quite wrong.

MSG is an extract from plants, refined and sold in dry form. Im a way, it is no different to processing our good old sugar which also comes from plant extract.

Because of the scare-mongering by various self-declared "health experts" many Western Governments (especially in USA) have conducted various studies on MSG over many decades, but have not come up with absolutely nothing adverse. The substance is as safe as eating sugar.

The article quotes the minister as saying that MSG "has serious affects (sic) on health of people".

Would have liked to know what studies - conducted in India (e.g. UP and Bihar laboratories) or abroad - has the minster based his opinions on?

The minister would seriously help the people by educating them not to fry things in oil - a very common cooking practice in India. The frying process is potentially very dangerous to health.

Or perhaps dissuading people from drinking any sweetened fizzy drinks: each can contains something like 7 teaspoons of sugar.

FDA says on its website that the controversial monosodium glutamate (MSG) is ‘generally recognised as safe’ (GRAS). MSG occurs naturally in many foods, such as tomatoes and cheeses.

So, does the state govt plan to ban tomatoes and cheeses in the future?

For those who disagree my comment,

I have put in my comment what FDA , in US says about MSG. There is no evidence to suggest that MSG affects our health in any manner. If you find one please post a link.

In this information age, I am surprised that people could be so uninformed. They may be uninformed or they may have some predetermined stance.

Now you people may wonder how I arrive at a conclusion that MSG(aginomoto) is not harmful. This is because like I stated before, FDA (whose standards are accepted world over) has deemed it safe. secondly, aginomoto is used widely in eastern Asian and south-east Asian cooking. And they consume quite a lot than we would ever have. But i don't see any major health issue in those countries. So why should such a thing be a issue over here that state govt wants to put a blanket ban on it? There are many other issue than need more attention than do some stupid thing that does not affect anyone.

    Rita,

What I am saying is that there has not been any conclusive proof that MSG is bad for human consumption. Any decisions taken by the govt must be based on some studies. Simply declaring something is bad and banning it is ridiculous. If you have found a study showing that MSG is bad then please send me a link.

Putting up board at restaurants does not mean MSG is bad. It can be that restaurants want to get more customers who think that MSG is bad for consumption. they are just using marketing phycology, think this way - there are many people who generally believe that restaurants use MSG in their food. So those people to will avoid going to restaurants specifically for this reason. But if restaurants put up board outside saying they are MSG free then they may attract those people who earlier would not have entered that restaurants.

Actually i heard about bad effects of MSG on a Ophra Winfrey more than 10 years ago. And I had believed it then. But after reading about this topic i noticed that there is no study proving that consumption of MSG as any bad effects on the human body. This is not me saying but the FDA of US stating that. Since FDA standards are accepted globally, i tend to trust them regarding this matter than any of our Indian food authorities. As you may know to how much degree Indian authorities may be corrupted. Since this MSG ban will mainly affect the Chinese restaurants, it may be that some politician wants to make money out of it.

Do you think that banning of Maggi noodles and launching of patanjali noodles was co-incidence?

    Sir,
There is absolutely no evidence to suggest that MSG causes cancer or any other disease. This is based the many studies conducted by various Western countries over many decades.

However, you may have come with something different. Would appreciate if you share the evidence.

To create and sustain health, feeding the body properly is absolutely essential – which is why I advise my patients to eliminate all processed foods. Why is this so critically important? Because virtually all processed foods are loaded with bad-for-the-body additives that wreak havoc on your health. Topping the charts of dangerous additives is the deservedly maligned MSG, (monosodium glutamate), a known carcinogen, endocrine disrupter and killer of brain cells, which may also be linked to the development of cardiac problems, kidney problems, neurological disorders, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Lou Gehrig’s disease to name a few. Any wonder why feel I must spread the word on this devastating toxin millions of people eat every day ... Dr. Frank Lipman.
