Mangaluru, Mar 16: People within Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) limits are in for a tough summer ahead, with the mayor on Thursday March 16 announcing measures to curb supply of drinking water to the city in view of the low water level in Netravati river.

Addressing a press meet here, mayor Kavita Sanil said that as the inflow into the Netravati river has stopped, the water stored in Thumbe and AMR dams will be used to meet the drinking water demands of the city till the end of May, or till monsoons begin.

From March 20, water supply within MCC limits will be stopped every Monday from 6 am till Tuesday 6 pm.

Water supply will be restored from Tuesday 6 pm till Thursday 6 pm.

Again, there will be no water from Thursday 6 pm to Friday 6 am.

Water will be supplied as usual between Friday 6 am till Monday 6 am.

In a nutshell, the water supply will be stalled and restored every 36 hours, except between Thursday evening and Friday morning. Altogether, there will be no water for 48 hours a week.

The above schedule will be followed till the end of summer, the mayor said.

The myor said that the decision has been taken in the interest of the citizens, and requested the public to cooperate.

"Last year we faced acute shortage of water and were dragged to critical situation. In order to avoid such problems, concerete measures are being taken. If monsoon arrives in the district, the order will be withdrawn.

"The present water level in AMR dam is 6.25m which can be used for 40 days, in Thumbe dam it is 4.15m, which can be used for 20 days," she said.

Buntings, flex boards to be removed

Sanil also said that from April 1, flex boards and buntings within the MCC limits will be removed. Banners will be allowed for 5 days if permission of MCC is sought, she said.

Is the new mayor Kavita Sanil sleeping?
It’s been 3 days there is no water in Kuntikan Barenail area.
Last evening at 6pm onwards we were supposed to get the water from municipality. Its Wednesday morning 9:24 am and not a single drop of water in the tap.
Within a week of becoming a mayor she has made our life hell.
If you are getting this message please do something about it and don’t be like the same old political leaders. Kindly set some example so that people talk about your good work for decades to come.

It is learnt all sorts of drainage water is left directly into the river at various places enroute to the city n there is high contamination of fecal matter, what is being done on this?

Secondly, how come skyscrapers r being given permission when there is acute shortage of potable water already?

Situation will become grim in the future!

A big boon to tanker water n bottled water suppliers!

What a great smart city which lacks basics like adequate water supply?

We the citizens of south Kanara always suffer during the summer months. Its ridiculous for ruling bodies to hold meeting in public and bark like shameless by giving excuses and silly solutions. They sit on their chairs their eat and go that's all. Last year they were talking of desalination plant to put up and sort out etc.. All went down the drain. These ruling body God only knows what kind of brains they are made off.

With over 3700 mm annual rainfall (average) in the area and still no drinking water in the summer??... is an excellent attribute to the smart the city. Looks like development is only measured with the number of concrete towers erected, pollutant spewing vehicles on the road, construction dust, filth everywhere and open sewage lines! The future appears to be grim, isn't it?

It does not surprise anyone when a donkey kicks. This is because it is its nature to do so. Similarly, don't be surprised if a politician makes promises and does not deliver. We have heard those nice words about 24x7 power, 24x7 water etc. They sound nice to hear. Come elections, people forget these and vote the same jokers back. That is only half the story. No one talks about the clueless bureaucracy which need to offer scientific solutions to these problems. Real issue at hand is inept bureaucracy which does not want to work hard for the people

We can not believe our Mayors. Because Harinath told last week that water is there for 3 months. Now where the water has gone? High level enquiries must be done. They are playing with citizens .

Hi .... I had read an article where an intellectual had once said .. If you go sit at a tea stall the person preparing a tea at the stall will lecture on Government on how it should function and measures to be taken on various issues and says the person running the government is useless and not functioning ... or to that matter all follow cricket .. he would advise how a cricket match would have turned if captain taken this decision , or Dhoni had payed other way round or whatever... Its a different thismg whether he prepares the tea right or whatever he makes up with ...My point is .. see the authorities have given the information on what we are going to face ahead ... and how we need to use our resources during hard times.. so we all be prepared ... So learn to appreciate for the information provided ...
Save Water ... and enjoy the summer break by leading an example.

It is said, 2000 TMC of water from Netravati flows into Arabian sea and our leaders could not think of doing something to conserve some of it by different means. The worth of water is not felt, till the well becomes dry and every year, only during summer, the leaders wake up.
