Rape of minor girl by Kerala priest: Five nuns among eight booked

Kannur (Ker), Mar 4 (PTI): Eight people, including five nuns, have been booked for their role in hiding facts related to the alleged rape of a minor girl by a vicar of a church in the district.

The in-charge of the private hospital at Kuthuparamba in the district, where the 16-year-old girl gave birth to a boy on February 17, and two others, besides the nuns, have been booked under non-bailable sections of POCSO Act and Juvenile Justice Act, Peravoor Circle Inspector, Sunilkumar, who is the investigating officer in the case, said today.

A report has also been submitted to the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights and Kannur district police superintendent against the Chairman and a member of the Child Welfare Committee of Wayanad district for hiding facts in the case, he said.

The report recommends action against them for concealing details of the newborn from the authorities. Based on a complaint lodged by the victim's mother with the Childline that Fr Robin alias Mathew Vadakkancheril had "sexually exploited" her daughter last year, the vicar was arrested on February 28.

Fr Robin

He was also removed from office by church authorities. The offence came to light after the girl, a resident of Neendunokki in the district, gave birth to a baby boy at a private hospital in Koothuparamba on February 7.

The 11th standard student was studying in the school in which the accused was also the manager, police said. Robin had attended a public programme on February 25 and left the place the next day, after police lodged a case against him under IPC section 376 (Rape) and the Protection of Children From Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

He was picked up from Chalakkudy in Thrissur district and brought here.

Had it been in Mlore , the Cong leaders would have rushed to help him and clear his name out of the scandal, and would have blamed the opposition or Modi for misguiding media and the youth. A large protest would have been held & defemation case would have been registered over the girls parents.

There are many cases which are not brought out in open. Madrasa teachers, Priests of different religious groups indulge in sexual atrocities. These get the religious political backing to save them. Whom to blame for?

Why Asaram bapu.. are you trying to change the topic. why not state that other priests be monitored. Priests are by and large actively involved in their religious societies where they are trusted as men of god and if they turn becoming predators then it's time to have them in check.
Asaram bapu does not represent Hindus .. if that is what you are trying to insinuate. There is a difference between this god man and priests. I condemn both, but in this case I would expect a christian such as you to support your fellow human than one wearing a Robe.

This is no witch hunting. Th fact is that people have such great reverence to religious figures that they immediately conclude that it is conspiracy against their religion. What is important to understand is priests do not represent their religion. They are all fallible. They could only help us, if they are faithful one to realize God irrespective of religions. The very fact of his suspension it is clear that the church is partially aware of the truth. And the nuns - they are a fearful lot and they would do everything to cover the sins of the priests than denounce their evil lives even if they are aware. It is sad but true. There is a section of very worldly priests in the catholic church. Unable to stand up to them, the nuns simply silently do things even if the priests are wrong. It is a good lesson for people of all religions. Denounce priests when they are wrong. Don't spare those who were a party to the crime by hiding facts. When religious men and women are exposed for their hypocrisy we will have a better society

Yes. A very large portion of clergy are after worldly pleasures. They preach but never practice. I find a lot of similarities between the pharisees of Bible and todays clergy.

If convicted, the main accused should get life in prison. The priests are held in higher standard and they are suppose to be role models to others. The gravity of sexual crime increases when priest commits it than the ordinary drunkard with low morale.

Not only the child, the child's father too should be with the girl. Let the tests prove who the father is and then wait till the girl attains 18 years before getting them married.

Giving a child to an unmarried girl invites innumerable problems. Yes, nobody has the right to take away a child from it's mother.

    Manohar,

Absolutely agree that the father should be in jail because Indian laws say sexual relationship with a girl below 18 is rape. Now, what if it was consensual ? Why did she not reveal about it till she gave birth ? Why did her mother come out only when the girl delivered ? Did she have no idea about the changes of her daughter's body ? Her never occurred menstrual cycles since nine months ?

Being a man you should have asked these questions than straight away demanding jail to the man.

Instead of allegations or speculation, it needs to be proved beyond any doubt by paternity test whether he is the father of the child the girl bore.
Then the police can take any action on remaining accused they have booked now.
As this case is involved a priest & a minor this case needs to be investigated & taken to a conclusion without any redtapism or delayed system we see in almost all these cases.
