Not afraid of ABVP: Kargil martyr's daughter's social media campaign goes viral

New Delhi, Feb 25 (PTI) : Days after Delhi University's Ramjas college saw violent clashes, a Lady Sri Ram College student who is a Kargil martyr's daughter has initiated a social media campaign, "I am not scared of ABVP", which has gone viral.

Gurmehar Kaur, daughter of Kargil martyr Captain Mandeep Singh, changed her Facebook profile picture holding a placard that read, "I am a student from Delhi University. I am not afraid of ABVP. I am not alone. Every student of India is with me. #StudentsAgainstABVP".

"The brutal attack on innocent students by ABVP is very disturbing and should be stopped. It was not an attack on protesters, but an attack on every notion of democracy that is held dear in every Indian's heart. It is an attack on ideals, morals, freedom and rights of every person born to this nation," she said in a Facebook status.

"The stones that you pelt hit our bodies, but fail to bruise our ideas. This profile picture is my way of protesting against the tyranny of fear," she added.

The literature student's classmates and peers started sharing the post, prompting students from various universities across the country to change their profile pictures with the same placard, as the initiative went viral.

Kaur's Facebook post so far has 2,100 reactions, 3,456 shares and 542 comments.

Ramjas College had on Wednesday witnessed large-scale violence between members of AISA and ABVP workers. The genesis of the clash was an invite to JNU students Umar Khalid and Shehla Rashid to address a seminar on 'Culture of Protests' which was withdrawn by the college authorities following opposition by the RSS student wing.

Why did ABVP protest ? There were slogans raised against the country. Violence isnt acceptable though. But why is it that during the time of every election/run upto an election/when an important bill is to be placed in parliament, the same elements start these programs in colleges. Anti social and anti national elements come in and shout anti India slogans. Instigate all well minded citizens. Then speak about democracy and what not. ABVP or nationalist organizations react or over-react. It becomes news and feeds everyone for days. Elections/Parliament session eventually get over. Everything subsides until the next one comes.

Colleges should be places where students learn to make a life for themselves and the society. Why are such discussions held that hardly impact the common man in the 1st place. Ask the common man on the street and he has no concerns about these things. Also have we ever thought that these things hardly happen in an engineering or a medical college (Jadhavpur & Srinagar are exceptions)

BTW, it is an irony that people who worship Lenin, Stalin and Mao daily speak about non-violence. When did communist Russia or communist China allow democracy to grow let alone flourish. Millions will killed or displaced. It is because of our great constitution that we all are able to live and speak freely. However we should ensure that such anti national slogan shouting elements are brought to book as per the law of the land. Violence is not an answer and only gives publicity to such elements

The bjp-led nda rode to victory in the lok sabha elections of 1999 on the backs of the "martyrs'' of kargil, subsuming in it the themes of nationalism and patriotism.

Post Kargil war with Pakistan in the Kargil sector of India. The CAG found abnormalities in the purchase of Coffins for the Martyrs of the Kargil War.

The Bharatiya Janata Party - led government decided to go in for emergency purchase of coffins following the action in Kargil that resulted in the death of more than 500 jawans and army officers. The scrutiny of records by the CAG showed that some middlemen made huge profit by supplying the coffins at highly inflated rates. The Indian government bought about 500 caskets for 2,500 dollars each, which is believed to be thirteen times higher than the actual price. The government incurred a hefty loss of 1,87,000 dollars in the purchase.

India is now counted among the fastest growing economies in the world. And yet it still does not have the wherewithal to produce body bags and aluminum coffins for meeting domestic needs!

How can we expect patriotism from the party which made kickbacks over the martyr of this nation?
If BJP really cares about the nation, let PM Modi click selfie 'Kargil martyr's daughter' and stringent action against the culprits?

So even if you do not complete your degree at 28, you enjoy hostel, food, studies, and take all benifits from Govt. it is okay. Even when you enjoy all the amenities from the Govt. and shout against Govt. is okay. But if you show that you are abusing your University by calling AFZAL KAATHIL ZINDA HAI .....
    BHARAT K 100 TUKDE HONGHE....INSHAH ALLAH..
    KASHMIR KI AZADI.......
    is also okay.
But if you protest against the person who shouted these slogans it is totally undemocratic and against our culture.

This girl does not know why her father died for and probably does not want to know. But she became famous by just holding a placard. She has become more important than her father. Maybe.

It is sad that a war veterans daughter has to come out in open against ABVP. Let the self claimed patriots join army and serve the nation at boarders rather than resorting to violence inside the country. Its easy to fight a battle against known enemy than unknown enemy within.
