Udupi, Sep 26: Jyothi U Shetty, a 49-year-old impressive athlete of Udupi, is a courageous person since childhood and has led an independent life. She quit studies while in tenth standard. As she grew, her zeal for sports grew further, and she never looked back thence. Marriage and children did not make much difference to her.

She was a woman of an unrelenting attitude and has developed into an all-rounder. In 2011, she drew international attention after bagging ten medals in the national events in running, long jump, high jump, shot put, hurdles and 100, 200, 400 and 800 meters relay.

Her financial constraints denied her any possibilities of making it to the international events held in China, Brazil, Japan, France and Singapore in spite of selections.

Her success is recognised and is evident from her massive fan following from various parts of the country. Besides her accomplishments in sports, she is an inspiration to many for her social welfare activities.

Extending a helping hand to the poor and downtrodden is commonplace for Shetty. She often drives patients to the hospital and back home. There are also instances of her, performing last rites for the unattended dead animals. The social activities by her have gained public notice.

She has raised her concerns about some age-old prejudices and has successfully abolished certain practices often with the aid of the police.

Jyothi's enthusiasm in participating in district and national level events continues to grow strong. Recently, she took part in the thirty-seventh National Masters Athletic Meet in Mysore from March 2 to March 6, for the 16 to 50 years age category. She won a gold medal in the 4x400 meters relay and the 21 km half marathon there. She bagged silver in the 300 meters race, 4x100 meters relay and bronze in the 80-meter hurdles. She contested in nation-level competitions, investing from her resources.

After six years now, Jyothi eagerly awaits the World Masters Athletics Championship which is hosted in Australia commencing on October 26. She intends to participate in the event and seeks financial assistance to realise her dream. The expense towards the event is approximately Rs 2 lac of which, Rs 50, 000 is being borne by sponsors and from likeminded donors. The balance of Rs 1.5 lac is hoped to be accumulated from kind-hearted sports-loving donors. To live her dream, she herewith makes a public appeal.

Let us all help to make this dream of hers a reality. Hoping, Jyoti U Shetty makes it to this mega event and through it, with excellence. Wishing her the best and generous financial aid from sports lovers.
