Udupi: Copper Inscriptions of Vijayanagar Empire Found in Barkur

Udupi, Nov 8: Two copper inscriptions belonging to the period of Vijayanagara Empire have recently been unearthed in Manigara Keri of Barkuru near the Temple of Sri Somanatha Shwara. They were found when the old house belonging to the couples Sri Manjunatha Bhat and Smt. B.K Sushila Bhat was being renovated.

The famous archaeological research scholar Dr. Keladi Venkatesh Joish estimated the period of these inscriptions as 1387 AD and 1473 AD.

The old couple that had a chance to find them in the cracks of the old walls of their dilapidated residence have handed them over to the archaeological department for preservation and for further research.

    The archeological department along with other Kannada sahitya/culture academy(s) needs to throw light on this issue. During Vijaynagara Empire, Chalukyas, and Rashtrakootas this great land used to attract foreigners/tourists and as noted and recorded by them, jewels and precious stones were sold on road side open market till such time the country was plundered by invaders. Now it’s high time at least we shall keep our culture intact.
