Mangaluru, Jun 7: Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner, A B Ibrahim, has said that sand mining has been banned in the district for 60 days from June 15 to August 15. Ibrahim explained that this step is being taken in view of fish breeding season. He was speaking at the meeting organized in his office on Monday June 6 relating to preparations made to handle monsoon-related problems.

Reminding the concerned that there is a gap of nine days for the ban to begin, he advised the concerned including builders of government structures to put together enough stock of sand during this period. He added that during the said period, inter-district sand transportation will also remain banned.

He said that cases were registered for illegal sand transportation against 74 vehicles. On the basis of recommendations made to the regional transport office, licences of 30 vehicles were suspended for a period of one month, said city commissionerate deputy commissioner of police, Shantharaju. The deputy commissioner advised to take similar steps in respect of the other vehicles. He advised formation of taluk level squads with night vigil to stop illegal sand transportation.

Deputy commissioner of Udupi district, Dr Vishal R, has said that sand mining will remain banned from June 1 to July 31 in the district. He said that stock of sand available in the district as at May 31 will be used for construction during the period of ban.
