Roshan Rodrigues        Anges Concessao

The Catholic community here were a part of Bajpe and Kalavaru parishes before the establishment of Permude parish. The people were walking several miles for their spiritual needs to Bajpe and Kalavaru churches in the absence of transport facilities. The community then realized the need of a Church in Permude. Meanwhile Seraphine Nazareth had made a vow for the construction of a Church for the health of her husband, Coffee planter in Chickmagalur, Permude resident John Baptist Balthazar Nazareth. She came forward for the construction in order to fulfill the vow. Her daughter Juliana Nazreth took up the responsibility of the construction. Her son in law Albert Ambudias Rodrigues extended his cooperation. It was decided that three fourth of the cost would be shared by the founders and a quarter of the cost would be borne by the parishioners by donating material and labour. The then Bishop late Rev Dr Raymond D' Mello laid the foundation for the church on November 25, 1959.Bajpe church Parish priest Fr Leo Carvalho extended his cooperation. The Church was consecrated on May 16, 1963.

The Church built in memory of late John Baptist Nazareth was devoted to St John Baptist who is known for truth and justice. Assistant parish priest of Bajpe, Fr Peter Noronha took up construction of residence with the help of the clergy in Bajpe.

As per the official notification of the then Bishop on October 24,1965, the parish was formed after separating from Bajpe and Kalavaru parishes. Late Fr Jacob Crasta was the first priest of Permude church. Later when Kateel parish was formed, the families from Kateel to Ekkaru joined Kateel parish.

Agriculture and Dairy farming were the occupations of the people here during the early years. As the production of milk was in plenty,Permude was nick named as Perda Mudde, in Tulu. As education was given importance, many people have worked in the home town and foreign countries and have been responsible for the economic development of the place.

Eleven parish priests have served in the parish since its inception. They are-Fr Jacob S Crasta,Fr Edwin Pinto,Fr Hilary Sanctis,Fr Henry Fernandes,Fr Vernon Vas,Fr Denis Moras Prabhu, Fr Victor George D' Souza, Fr Peter Theodore D' Souza,Fr Richard Lasrado, Fr Oswald Lasrado and Fr Valerian Rodrigues. Fr Edwin Vincent Correa is the present parish priest. With the efforts of priests who served the parish, there has also been social progress. The parish has also given several priests and nuns.

The parish has 184 families with the population of 750 catholics. The parishioners have decided to celebrate the golden jubilee with the participation of all the communities on January 13, 2016. With the guidance and supervision of young priest Fr Edwin Vincent Correa, a health fund, free house for a poor family and a souvenir are proposed in the project. The procession of Horekanike will be held on January 10.

Dr Aloysius Paul D' Souza will be offering the Holy Mass on January 13 at 10 am. The Bishop will also be presiding the hall programme at 11.45 am. The Guests of honor will be Msgr Denis Moras Prabhu, Vicar General, Abhayachandra jain, MLA and Minister of sports, youth affairs and Fisheries, Nalin Kumar Kateel MP, Mangaluru constituency, J R Lobo MLA and president of welfare committee for backward classes and minorities, Ivan D' Souza, MLC, Fr Remegious Aranha, Chief priest, Kalavaru diocese, Rithesh Shetty, Zilla panchayat member; Ishwar Kateel, zilla panchayat member, Yogish Kotian, Taluk panchayat member, Ramesh Shetty, Taluk panchayat member Monappa Shetty Ekkaru, president of Bajpe service cooperative bank and APMC, Saroja, president of Permude Grama panchayat and Suresh Shetty, president of Ekkaru grama panchayat.
