Bengaluru: Girish Karnad apologizes for remarks on Kempegowda

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Updated

Bengaluru, Nov 11: A day after he stoked a controversy with his remarks on the occasion of Tipu Jayanti, veteran playwright, actor and litterateur, Girish Karnad on Wednesday 11 apologized for the statement he had made on Kempegowda.

In a statement released from his home at J P Nagar here, Karnad, a Jnanpith awardee, said that what he expressed was his personal opinion and that it was not backed by any evil intention. He said he was sorry if his remarks had hurt anyone.

The noted writer had expressed the opinion that Kempegowda International Airport at Bengaluru should have been named after Tipu Sultan. His remarks had come during the birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan organized at the state secretariat on Tuesday November 10 in the presence of chief minister, Siddaramaiah. He had remarked that Kempegowda was not a freedom fighter like Tipu Sultan.

Chief minister Siddaramaiah said the government has nothing to do with the remarks made by Karnad at a state government-organised function to mark the birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan here yesterday.

"It is his personal remarks. The government does not have any connection to the remarks made by Karnad," Siddaramaiah said, as he also came under criticism for not rebutting the Jnanpith awardee immediately at the function itself.

Siddaramaiah also said it was a mistake on the part of the Jnanapith award winner to have made such remarks. "It is a mistake. I have told you," he said.

"I do not know why Girish Karnad made such a remark. I was also there (when he made the remark), I wanted to counter but I did not do," he said.

Siddaramaiah also said there was no question of renaming Kempegowda International Airport. "A decision had already been taken to keep the name of the BIAL as Kempegowda - there arises no question of replacing Kempegowda's name given to Bengaluru International Airport," he said.

"Mysuru regional commissioner will conduct the inquiry into the incident, which resulted in the unfortunate death of Kuttappa," Siddaramaiah told reporters in Bengaluru earlier in the day.

Police caned the mob and fired tear gas on it to avert a clash between protestors and supporters of Tipu function.

The chief minister also announced Rs 5-lac compensation to Kuttappa's bereaved family.

A day-long shutdown was observed in Madikari town in Karnataka on Wednesday in protest against the celebration of 18th century Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan's 265th birth anniversary by the state government on Tuesday.

"The 12-hour shutdown passed off without any untoward incident despite protest demonstrations and rallies by the BJP cadres and VHP activists in the town," Kodagu superintendant of police Vartika Katiyar told reporters here later.

Security was stepped up with the deployment of additional police forces across the town to maintain law and order.

"Ban order restricting assembling of more than five persons under section 144 of the CrPC has been extended to ensure peace and maintain law and order," Katiyar said.

BJP, JD(S) and various Kannada outfits slammed Karnad's remarks on naming the international airport after Kempegowda.

BJP said he had insulted the founder of Bengaluru on an issue which was a "closed chapter".

Former deputy chief minister and BJP leader, R Ashok, who is spearheading a campaign against the remarks of Karnad, who had also courted controversy with some previous remarks, said that he will continue to fight against the unkind remarks made by Karnad in spite of the apology offered.

"Karnad had made his remarks in a public meeting in Vidhana Soudha. If they were his personal opinions, they should have come at a private function. I hereby ask Karnad to come to Vidhan Soudha and make a public statement about his apology in the presence of chief minister," Ashok stated.

Hundreds of BJP's cadres, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajarang Dal activists staged a protest demonstration at T G circle in the centre of the town and took out a protest rally to the district's deputy commissioner's office against the state government for organising Tipu functions across the state.

JD(S) leader and former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy said the remarks were an attempt to divide the society and the chief minister should have immediately responded to Karnad's remarks. "Does he (Karnad) know history? I don't know for what reason he was given Jnanpith," the JD(S) leader said.

Besides the opposition BJP, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajarang Dal and other political, social and religious organisations criticised Karnad.

Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce president SaRa Govindu said those with sense should not speak in that manner. Karnad's remarks were an insult to Kempegowda and an attempt to tar his image, he said, adding, the entire film industry condemned it.

Various Kannada organisations and heads of religious institutions also condemned Karnad for raking up a controversy by trying to equate Tipu with Kempe Gowda, who belonged to the dominant Vokkaliga community.

yes, what a shame. I would have appreciated if they hit the real Karnad with a chappal :)) why because he is a nonsense, he created hatred during the Kaveri issue also. Why does he not keep his intellect to himself than creating all this fuss? Is he not intellect enought to know that his remarks will create a furore? Is he a buddhi jeevi or illadha jeevi?

Commenting is human habit. Can we live in this world if we start giving importance to every comments that everybody makes? Now a days it has become a dangerously routine. Some one somewhere makes a statement, media hypes it and protest starts. This is only increasing hatred. Why cant we learn to ignore such things and live peacefully?

If Tipu is freedom fighter then British are also freedom fighters.
Mysore kingdom from wodeyars was grabbed by Hyder Ali in a cunning way, British liberated and handed it over back to wodeyars.

Mysore became prosperous and peaceful state under wodeyars, dams, factories, universities and many first things in Asia like Hydroelectricity plant established.

More than anyone British contributed more for India, united it politically the map which we see, laid foundation for democracy etc.

So we must celebrate Jayanthi of British rulers also

I really can't understand what is going on.
Govt, leaving issues like farmers death, busy in trivial issues celebrating Jayanti's which are widening rift in communities.
The very concept of freedom fight is misinterpreted.
Tipu fought against foreign British and allied with foreign French.
Invaded Indian Malabar King to expand his Kingdom.
Instead of protecting his subjects, forcibly converted and on prejudice, killed scores of other caste subjects.

What's the big deal about Karnad's statement that there should be demonstrations on the streets? Karnad in his speech actually praised Kempegowda and called him a great leader. all he said was that the airport should have been named after Tipu as Devanahalli is his birthplace and he was a freedom fighter. Those protesting against this statement are merely doing it for political benefits. it is time people saw through these violent elements

Accepting apology from Karnad means supporting his ideology. Karnad has uttered his statement with full conscience mind is in no way pardonable. Slip of the tongue that too by the personality like Karnad is not easily recoverable. Karnad's statement has come at the time when state is passing through bad phase of controversial issues.
Why the political leaders are not abstaining from issuing provocative statements ? Are they are aiming at unrest in the state so that they can make use of public sympathy for attracting votes ?

    Inscriptions
On the handle of the sword presented by Tipu to Marquess Wellesley was the following inscription:
"My victorious sabre is lightning for the destruction of the unbelievers.Ali, the Emir of the Faithful, is victorious for my advantage, and moreover, he destroyed the wicked race who were unbelievers. Praise be to him (God), who is the Lord of the Worlds! Thou art our Lord, support us against the people who are unbelievers. He to whom the Lord giveth victory prevails over all (mankind). Oh Lord, make him victorious, who promoteth the faith of Muhammad. Confound him, who refuseth the faith of Muhammad and withhold us from those who are so inclined from the true faith. The Lord is predominant over his own works. Victory and conquest are from the Almighty. Bring happy tidings, Oh Muhammad, to the faithful for God is the kind protector and is the most merciful of the merciful. If God assists thee, thou will prosper. May the Lord God assist thee, Oh Muhammad, with a mighty great victory."

During a search of his palace in 1795, some gold medals were found in the palace, on which the following was inscribed on one side in Persian: "Of God the bestower of blessings", and the other: "victory and conquest are from the Almighty". These were carved in commemoration of a victory after the war of 1780. The following is a translation of an inscription on the stone found at Seringapatam, which was situated in a conspicuous place in the fort:

"Oh Almighty God! dispose the whole body of infidels! Scatter their tribe, cause their feet to stagger! Overthrow their councils, change their state, destroy their very root! Cause death to be near them, cut off from them the means of sustenance! Shorten their days! Be their bodies the constant object of their cares (i.e., infest them with diseases), deprive their eyes of sight, make black their faces (i.e., bring shame)."

In light of this and other events, B.A. Saletare has described Tipu Sultan as a defender of the Hindu dharma, who also patronised other temples including one at Melkote, for which he issued a Kannada decree that the Shrivaishnava invocatory verses there should be recited in the traditional form. The temple at Melkote still has gold and silver vessels with inscriptions indicating that they were presented by the Sultan. Tipu Sultan also presented four silver cups to the Lakshmikanta Temple at Kalale.[66] Tipu Sultan does seem to have repossessed unauthorised grants of land made to Brahmins and temples, but those which had proper sanads were not. It was a normal practice for any ruler, Muslim or Hindu, on his accession or on the conquest of new territory. The portrayal of Tipu Sultan as a secular leader is disputed, and some sources,[which?] largely left-leaning scholars from the 20th century, suggest that he in fact often embraced religious pluralism.

There knowledge should be put in books which will be benefetial for the future generations. Karnataka has got the max Gnana Peta Prashashthi and only two veterans U.R. One thing I don't understand why these political parties always goes behind controversies..what was the requirement by the congress govt to celebrate Tipu jayanthi. the existing congress goivt and the Karnataka public doesn't know anything about him..its only from history we know some thing and that also may not be true. we Indians are facing lot of other problems.make our life comfortable by good governance. this tipu..pupu..jayanthi is not going to upgrade the life of common man.. its surprise that even after the Bihar verdict, political parties didn't learn..common man doesn't want anyones jayanthi..he wants to see his welfare has been taken care pff..

First of all, why do we have to celebrate the birthdays of former rulers of India? For example why do we have to celebrate the birthdays of Shivaji, Rana Prathab Singh, Tippu Sultan etc etc? These rulers they fought so many battles and killed so many innocent people for their own glory, success & power. One way or the other, all these rulers have hurt one or the other like Tippu Sultan has hurt the Christian and Hindus. Similarly, those Christian who see in British as their saviors from the atrocities of Tippu Sultan should understand that even the British are not good as they have killed so many innocent Indians. So by this, please don’t praise any of the former rulers of India and don’t celebrate their birthdays! It’s a total waste.
Dear all, please don’t take me wrong here and I am not against any community or any of the former rulers. But I am against the killing of innocent people in the name off birthdays.

i didnt heard celebrating Rana prataph singh jayanthi. shivaji fought for marathis, so his jayanthi celebrated in maharatra. Tipu sultan so many years no jayanthi but now due to some political intesnion started.

There is no need of celebrating birthdays of any one! it is utter nonsense. It is important to follow and continue the good work done by them. All birth day celebrations are to be stopped.
