Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (DV)

Mangaluru, Jul 11: The golden jubilee celebrations of St Aloysius Evening College were inaugurated at St Aloysius High School hall here on Saturday July 11.

Prof K Byrappa, vice-chancellor of Mangalore University was the chief guest, J R Lobo, MLA, Mangaluru South constituency and Fr Denzil Lobo, rector, St Aloysius College Institutions were the guests of honour while Dr Stanislaus D’Souza, provincial, Karnataka Jesuit Province presided over the function.

Addressing the gathering, Prof Byrappa said, "Mangalore University has a lot of respect and committment towards this great institution of St Aloysius. In earlier days, the Maharaja of Mysuru had great concern for social justice, development and higher education but still Mysuru city lacked an institution for higher education, as compared to South Kanara. The love and affection of this district for higher education is the same even today. Mangaluru city is known as the city of education and a hub for higher education. In the past, people used to look towards (the then) Madras, Bangalore, Pune and Calcutta even for graduation, but later the trend changed and people started to come to Dakshina Kannada.

"Every year during April and May you see bustling activity in Mangaluru, as students come for CET and GATE coaching. It shows the discipline and committment of the people of this region. I congratulate this institution which was established over 130 years ago and started evening college in 1966. It is due to the remarkable vision of the then rector Fr Mathew Lewis and the then principal Fr Stany Vaz who realized the importance of this evening college which has now completed 50 years. I salute these two great visionaries," he lauded.

"The College has progressed remarkably and even its faculty members have achieved great success. I request the College to engage in faculty improvement and encourage the teachers to pursue PhD. That way they can render better service to society. I wish great success to this institution," he added.

MLA J R Lobo congratulated the St Aloysius Institution and said, "This is a great event marking the 50 years of service of the Evening College. St Aloysius is a well-known in the country in the field of education. It is because of three institutions - St Aloysius, St Agnes and Government College that Dakshina Kanna is a century ahead of other parts of Karnataka. The service rendered by missionaries such as Basel Mission, the Jesuits and others in this region has helped this part to develop.

"Education is not only about obtaining knowledge but about developing one's entire personality. We are 100 years forward because of the selfless service rendered by certain people that has changed the entire place. As an elected representative and a citizen, I bow to the service rendered by this Institition," he added.

Speaking on present-day education system, he said, "Education is normally meant for preparing people for future and preparing the society for growth. But today education has become a business. Today we find children being taught in air-conditioned rooms even in kindergarten classes and high donation is demanded even for them. Professional colleges are selling seats for money. My question is after obtaining education in air-conditioned classrooms, will they get jobs in similar AC environment? What type of students are being prepared in today's society? Is our education aequate to meet the requirement of today's society? Today when we charge high donation and capitation fee, it makes the student think first of recovering that amount - So what kind of person are we giving to society? We need to introspect on the type of education we need to impart."

On the occaison, rector Fr Denzil Lobo became the first official donor of the 'One Rupee Revolution', an innovative outreach programme by St Aloysius Evening College. Representatives from the students, staff, parents, and alumni/nae joined the
rector in donating 1 rupee.

Fr Denzil Lobo emphasised the Jesuit principles of special option for the poor which prompted the novel and noble venture. He also announced the special donation made by noted author Aravind Adiga who instituted a scholarship in the name of Udaya Holla, former attorney general of Karnataka by contributing Rs 10 lac. He said that the amount would be used to support deserving students coming from weaker economic
backgrounds.

Dr V Basil Hans compered the event. The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr Donald Lobo, organising secretary of the golden jubilee celebration committee. A colourful cultural extravaganza by the students and alumni/nae brought the programme to a close.

Dr Manohar V Serrao, John D'Silva and others were present.

The Jesuits had established the Evening College and the Evening High School primarily to accommodate dedicated students who could not afford time during the day as most of them were working men. Scores of students have benefited from this Evening College. Living in the College Staff quarters during my early childhood days, I recall the services of Fr Hilary Pereira SJ, who was the then Principal of the Institute. He was a dedicated Priest, much loved and respected by Staff and students. Mrs Leena Fernandes was another tall figure who gave her time and commitment to this Institute. Her dedication will always be remembered.
I am particularly proud that my father the late JFB Frank ( Lawyer Frank) and my Uncle the late SC Frank both taught Mercantile Law and English at SAC Evening College respectively. I salute all those dedicated staff members who have served in this Institution during these 50 golden years.

HALF A CENTURY.This is a great event in the life and history of an institution.

Over one hundred and thirty-five years ago the nine Jesuit fathers of sacred memory made a momentous beginning by commencing their mission to spread the gift of knowledge to just about forty students. This small beginning has grown over the years and today St. Aloysius is considered a pioneer institution.

Fifty years ago an idea was conceived in the minds of Our Jesuits to make another start by making education available to such of those people who were not free to attend classes during the day. Father Mathew Lewis the then rector along with Father Stan Vaz (the first principal)were the pioneers of giving this idea a LIFE.

I am one of those students who had the privilege to receive my education at the hands of The Jesuit Fathers. Fathers Ignatius Fernandes, Bertram Sequeira, Joe Sequeira, Picardo and other Fathers played important roles in my life.

I had the privilege of raising the Centenary toast to St. Aloysius College in the year 1980 at the invitation of Rev. Father Mathew Lewis and the memory of my taking the platform that day is still fresh in my mind.

Let us hope that THE EVENING COLLEGE too will grow like the day college and will make great strides in the field of education.

Now an important question.... what can we the past Aloysians do to help our ALMA MATER. Let us not be just spectators but let us come forward to return to our institution by contributing our mite towards achieving HER FUTURE DREAMS.

Rev. Father Stanislaus D'Souza - Our Provincial and Rev. Father Denzil Lobo our Rector are now called upon to guide the future destiny of St. Aloysius.

The present principal Mr. M. Serrao has now taken over the reins and is doing a very good job. I would also mention that the first lady Principal Lana Fernandes contributed a lot towards the growth of the evening college.
