Justice for Mangaluru's 'Baby Nirbhaya' - Scores of people raise voice in unison

Mangaluru, Mar 21: Nearly 1,500 people from all walks of life came together on Saturday March 21 evening to demand justice for 'Baby Nirbhaya', as they called the three-and-a-half-year-old LKG student who was sexually assaulted allegedly by her school van driver.

Men, women and children, irrespective of caste, creed and religion led a candlelight march from Nehru Maidan to DC's office, where a protest meet was held.

Flagging off the march at Nehru Maidan, Nandagopal of Centre for Integrated Learning said, "We are against perverted minds. We have to build an educated society. So far we have heard of rape cases in Delhi and then in Bengaluru, and now we hear of it in our own neighbourhood. This candlelight march is to enlighten people against such atrocities and demand justice for the child."

Addressing the gathering near DC's office, Renny D'Souza, state convener of CLC Karnataka said, "No action has been taken against the school and hence we are organizing this march. POCSO Act has to be implemented in the right way as it is, and action should be taken against the culprit. We should teach our children about their safety. This is only the beginning of our protest. Let the government and the police take warning from this march and ensure that such incidents do not occur again."

Activist Manjula said that the police have failed to take sufficient action on the matter and expressed suspicions that they were trying to close the case. She also slammed the school management for not showing concern and taking responsibility for the action of the school driver. She demanded action against the school and speedy probe into the case so that justice is done to the victim and her family at the earliest. She also urged the district administration and the education department to check security measures in schools in the district.

Among those present were Vidya Dinker of Citizens' Forum, Sachita Nandagopal, Umar U H and others.

Do not vote for the next elections.

While they come home asking for vote, ask them what action(s) have their party taken aginst such incidents ? Be it BJP, Congress or any other party.

Remember, they are not for the benefit for the people/society. They are for their own benefit.

Great show of unity. This will not bring justice but will send a clear signal to the future rapists as well as schools in Mangalore/Udupi. The government both state and central will also will be careful about people power. No wonder we do not see CAP LOCK Shetty here today as well as jeevan, Ad, J Anatha to name a few. Now everyone knows what kind of humans they are. It does not matter for us since we know there are more humans than these inhumane in our society. There is no point of waiting for the police to take action against the school. The parents should name the accused and the school in their FIR and go to the court directly. Judiciary will order the police what to do. Police always will wait for their master's order unless the get get a kick from Judiciary.

    @Shankar,
First of all you used the word "Sickulars" which shows your mindset and no need further explanation what you are.
If the Police & Govt is doing their job is fine. But this procession and protests are moral support to the victim & family. Also it shows the unity of the people against crimes and it will bring awareness in other school managements, teachers, police depts, parents to be alert about school going kids. Also such a sick minded people will not dare to commit this type of rapes, crimes etc. in future if we are all united. But people like you never change, every incident, every crimes you will look only on communal angle.

For all sickulars here, let me clarify my stand once and for all.

The sexual assault on the child is in no way be supported at all.
The accused (the culprit here) has to be punished with the most stringent law applicable.
The school administration also should be booked though they are not directly involved in the crime, but they did try to hide the truth.

Now, the accused is arrested, chargesheet will be filed soon. The SI who delayed the arrest is transferred already.

What is the use of these processions and protests? Are you protesting because the suspect is already arrested? You are just elevating the issue to higher levels where the outside world will see the incidence as ' a Hindu rapes a Muslim child'.

If you all have a human heart, let the judiciary punish the accused he is booked under POSCO. Let the matter die down so that when the child grows up, let her not be haunted with those bad memories. Let her playmates do not make fun of her or humiliate her in school.
    Hope you understand.

    Shanker,

The CANDLE LIGHT March was to show how UNITEDLY we Mangaloreans protest such heinous crime irrespective of caste, creed, color or religion.

It is to bring AWARENESS in the Society that such crimes should not be repeated in our society.

The UNITED protest March was to demand JUSTICE should not be delayed to BABY NIRBHAYA Mangalore.

Stringent punishment is to be given so that people will think 1000 times before doing such crimes.

    We need peaceful society.
We need Hindus, Muslims live with love, trust and brotherhood. We do not want see communal Mangalore.

Hope now you understood the objectives of the PROTEST MARCH.

Shankar - firstly, the march was to show solidarity against such heinous crimes. Secondly, only the accused has been arrested - there has not been any action taken against the school management who took this case so lightly. Why? Such schools should be shut down because if they cannot stand for their students, they cannot take care of them either.

Also, this is NOT A COMMUNAL issue. People like you try to make it one. Since you have anyways brought it up, let's look at this from another point of view..if the victim was from the majority and the accused was a minority.. protests would have turned violent and the "moral police" would have been creating havoc all over the place.

This was just a silent, peaceful protest in which demands were put forward to the administration to provide justice to the victim and her family.

Shankar - think twice before you post anything. Think from the victim's point of view. Have a heart.

There are 58 countries who have used a death penalty in at least the last 10 years and still have it as one of their punishments. 16 of those countries use it for crimes of rape, rape of children, and rape under aggravating circumstances while other countries have been under pressure to impose it, because of the high rates of crime.

In countries around the world, there are thousands to tens of thousands of children being raped every year.

This march is nothing but a attention seeking rally by the convenors. They want get noticed by the state and national media, want to give interviews, project India in a dark shape and thus get foreign funds like Greenpeace.

    For the convenors.
What awareness you want to create? How to disrupt an on going investigation by unnecessary pressure? Or are you creating awareness among kids about good touch and bad touch? In that case make teams go to schools and have an interaction with kids for one hour.

Adultery begins in the heart. Cutting private parts will not do much good. A change of heart is what is needed. Sin starts in the heart.

"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.'But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart" (Mathew 5, 27-28).

To lust after someone in their heart is just like adultery because it occurs in the mind just as the actual physical act. It is a covetous heart that lusts after the flesh and seeks instant gratification at the expense of another. Adultery... therefore begins in the heart before it ever reaches the bed... So when lust lingers unabated, it conceives sin... Certainly the physical act is far worse but adultery in the heart, by lusting after someone who is not your spouse, is already sinful as the mind has performed what the body didn’t have to...

"Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me" (Psalm 51, 10).

@C D'Souza, The atrocity dine by that rapist deserve more noise all over the state. First, thus march is a protest as well an awareness for child safety. Secondly, lot of efforts going on to save the culprit. Finally, we need quick action on this bcoz everybody know 'justice delayed is justice denied'.. Please do not stop protest until rapist is duly punished for this heinous act on innocent child.
