Mangalore / Udupi, Sep 8: The Catholics flocked to churches across the district in huge numbers in celebration of the feast of Nativity or Monthi Fest, marking the birthday of Mother Mary.

World over, this day is celebrated as the feast of Immaculate Conception. The Konkani Christians, apart from paying obeisance to Mother Mary, also celebrate the festival of the new corn (harvest) on this day.

The faithful thronged churches in processions, dressed in colourful attires, with people carrying flowers in baskets and paddy. Churches at Bendore, Milagres, Valencia, Urwa, Bejai, Kulshekar and everywhere else wore a festive look, brimming with devotees and resounding with traditional hymns.

A series of 9 Novenas to the Blessed Virgin Mary are recited on a daily basis, at the end of which children offer flowers in a ceremonious manner at the grotto of Mother Mary. Sweets are distributed to all the children on the novena days.

The paddy or first grain is brought to the Altar in a procession and blessed by the priest. The offertory procession includes the statue of Mother Mary, sugarcane, vegetables, flowers, fruits, bread and wine.
The blessed paddy and sugarcanes are then taken home by the people. The grains are crushed at home, added to milk, and served to the family members.

It is also an occasion for get-togethers, with members of the family sharing a festal lunch comprising sumptuous vegetarian dishes. Mangalorean Catholics celebrate this festival with great fervour, no matter which part of the world they are in.

World over, this day is celebrated as the feast of Immaculate Conception.

May I draw your kind attention to the above lines. The Feast of Immaculate Conception of B.V.M. is universally celebrated on December 8 and not on September 8 as you have reported!

On September 8 the Church celebrates the Nativity of B.V.M. which is also a popular feast among Konkani speaking Catholic community known as Monthi Fest.

NATIVITY of Our Lady is observed with great fervor not only in Mangalore but almost all over the world. This co-insides with the HARVEST FESTIVAL. It is wonderful to see little children gathering round the statue of Infant Mary with flowers which they offer to Our Lady with great excitement.

When a little child I too recall taking the flowers in a plate for the purpose. However now tiny rattan basket have replaced the plates.

By this token I wish all Daiji readers a VERY HAPPY MONTH FEST. may our Lady guide and protect us.

    Beautiful and inspiring pictures.

Special thanks to those non-Christian friends for their touching comments.

In Koran, Mother Mary is mentioned 26 times, more than any other woman in Koran.

Wishing a happy feast of Nativity.

Excellent coverage by DW on Feast of Nativity. In Tulu we used to call it as 'Koral Parba' To see the snaps childrens and elders holding 'Koral' and flowers walking towards church is so sootghing to eyes.On the other hand this is the most auspicious day for Hindus especially in Karnataka where it is more populor to see temples are decorated and Lord Ananta is worshipped in all temples. This is the days day dedicated to Shesha naga as per blessings of Lord Vishnu as per legends.
Greetings and and good wishes to all on this auspicious occasion.....
Thanks pnce again to DW for nice coverage....

I remember when we were kids used to rob flowers from our neighbours and we were busy collecting different types of flowers and our elder brothers arranging in a plastic bowl and preparing us for the next day.and we were happy to recieve sugar cane, really i miss those days. and tears roll out, thinking the affection and love of our parents siblings, neighbours those days.happy feast to all of us.and still i remember, when our paddy fields were ruined. and my father prayed secretely to mother mary and the answer to my dads prayer was instant, he saw next day a big cobra snake which was distroying the paddy fields died on the road side after a truck crushed his head under the tyre. By this we can make out mother mary is still alive and walking among us interceeding for us. happy feast for all of u.

    Memories are Golden.
But I would like to correct the wrong belief of cobra destroying paddy fields.
Cobras are friends of farmer as they eat rats which destroy paddy fields.
I think you were afraid to venture into the field where it was residing.

Watching all these cute, innocent kids enjoying the festive mood, my memories flashed backed to the child wood days being spent joyously in the company of so many child wood friends. Ages have been flown away but the sweet memories of the past are still fresh like the fragrance of the flowers.
Wishing all our Christian community a Happy Feast Day of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary!

The joy of the Fest and bond of family/friendly love be with you always.

It’s nice to see all children are in colour full dress carrying beautiful flower baskets… Ladies and Gentlemen dressed in very sensible manner with smiling faces all around with religious fervor too. What else you need to enjoy the day by forgetting all hard works of khareef season, sorrow and pain they suffered by few too. I wish all our readers “A very Happy Monthi Fest”
