Mangalore, Jul 10: In yet another case of alleged cattle trafficking, Mangalore rural police on Wednesday July 10 seized 19 cows and calves and a vehicle which was transporting them. However, the accused managed to escape.

The incident took place at Gurpur bridge at around 6.30 am.

The police were on their routine check when a Mahindra pickup, without number plate, passed by. The police signalled the vehicle driver to stop, but instead, in a bid to escape, the driver drove the vehicle in reverse.

The police chased the vehicle for a short distance. At the same time, another vehicle came on to the bridge, and the driver of the pickup could not drive any further and was forced to stop. The three persons inside got out and fled before the police could catch them.

After the persons escaped, the police inspected the pickup vehicle and found 19 cows and calves inside. The seized the vehicle and the animals were taken to the police station.

Out of the 19, four animals died soon after, sources said.

Mangalore rural police have registered a case.

Why is such a silly incident so highly highlighted ? Is the job of the Mangalore Rural Police only to catch transportation of cows ? Are they meant only for that ? It seems so !

These same Police Station guys watched the fun from outside during the BJP ruled " HOMESTAY ATTACK '.

Let us ask BD/Ramasene to create trouble in one of the Orphanages/Old age homes with conversion issue as they were doing earlier, vacate the place by force and turn it into cow shed. This is the most suitable way to protect animals. If these groups strive to help and protect the poor and helpless same way as they do in cow case, our State will be Paradise. Most animals are transported this way only in India. Sheep and goatvan pack animals where by the time they reach the destined place many are dead. Even pigs are packed and transported in the same way. Chicken are even more cruelly transported in small cages. They are also carried on cycles, scooters and bikes, most of the time heads dangling down, rubbing against wheel or ground etc., This is the way we treat these animals in India before culling them. So there should be a policy to treat all animals including cattle to be handled and treated hygenically.

Only during my childhood days, we used to taste beef once fortnightly. I have never witnessed the pathetic scene of these animals, the way they are shown. Disgusting and hear-rending. The butchers would have sold the dead meat to some prolific customers.

I think it is a good question Zaid Sir. We may get some logical answer.
I feel cattle should be 'transported' as you rightly said. Perhaps in a pick-up truck, not more than 2-3 at a time without over-crowding could be the best way. I do not know the 'rule'. Certainly not in passenger cars or 19 heads in one truck.
Surely, I am not expecting them to be transported in AC Volvo busses but at least the poor animals LIVE in dignity (they deserve) till they are put to death?

I don't know why people are making such bg big issues. When human dies no body will come and asks. Forget abt 19 cows a single cow is not allowled to transport. Its just political issues to get the votes. My request is to those soft corner people there r many cows who don't have any shelter in many places. Go and bring those cows to the home and get them have food. Fooling public is very easy now a days

DisAgree [13] Agree [10] Report Abuse

    Wed, Jul 10 2013

    Mr. Zaid,
    Please do not mix issues.
I don't think anybody in this forum is so inhuman not to deplore human killings or to show apathy towards the death of a human being.
Problem here is more than political.
There are some people who enjoy commenting by hurting others sentiments or belief. This is the problem. They know there are some people who get hurt by that action because cow is scared to them. You thought all these comments they throw at another human being, glorifying illegal trafficking of cows / eating beef and how tasty it is etc. were innocently done? It is a clear attempt to insult a section of people (albeit small) who see their God in cows.
Why you think a person should not have soft corner towards animals? Who says Hindus are not offering shelters to aged cattle? There are many shelters already. Those who are staying in flats have practical problems to bring cows to their homes Sir. Just because they can’t bring the cows home you want them to stop feeling for the cows?
What about those cows stolen from the house where it was tied in the shed?
Please tell me what makes you justify cruelty to animals? Whoever transports them and kills them is not supposed to kill that animal according to his religious beliefs? How will you ensure that it is done properly? In this case 4 cows died during transportation. What if the contaminated meet were to appear in some unsuspecting hotels in the name of CHEAP & TASTY food?
Where is the politics if I call for safe meat and practice hygiene?
Why your community people should get agitated when there is a question of a PIG? You may be kind hearted person to ignore the insults thrown at you. Unfortunately not all are same like you Sir.
Fooling public is easy, but what is so great in scoring points over each other?

Its pathetic, why these people transport animals in such manner, they can officially make a sale deal, unless these cows are stolen. During this season Beaf meat is more in demand. Partly we should blame for the law against cow slaughter in Karnatka, soon it should be lifted. Those who want to eat let them eat, those who want to worship let them worship.

Very disturbing pics, especially for people who have roots from villages and have grown up seeing catlle in their backyard being raised & cared more like a family members. All humanity is not taken to consideration about the value of a Cow in ones lives from its milk to the ones who pull the heavy plough giving us the rice we eat today. I guess the people who do these things (Sealing & stuffing twenty cows in small such vehicle) do not eat rice but $#!^.
Guys is this Meat worth so much that you don't mind doing such inhuman & heinous acts of hurting these poor animals who spend their lives serving us ? Why don't you ask the Govt to import Beef from New Zealand or Down under where the herds are raised for meat purpose and eat a best quality meat than steal and traffic somebodies hard earned and rared cattle thus creating a social problem for all ???

    Dear Sharath,

Absolutely agree with u. I do not know which language these cow-traffickers will understand. If people dont sell their cows, what is the problem with these thieves ? If these thieves want to have beef, let them rear cows by themselves and eat as much as possible to build flesh. No values at all to these rogues. Any person who knows value of a cow wont stoop to this level. We need tough actions from authorities. Let the beef lobby pressure government to procure meat from abroad.... but not to steal precious cows from families.

It will not work dear, under this Govt the CM will give his vehicle also and ask his cabinet also to give their old vehicles to aid such trafficking as its the blood flown and meat consumed of these innocent animals is what brings them votes and their seats they are sitting in now.

Indeed very sad to see the animals in a pathetic condition. However, at once do not jump to conclusion saying these cows are being transported by a particular community unless the person involved is caught. Politics is a dirty game and politicians can stoop to any low to gain peoples' support. Police should investigate thoroughly and catch the real culprit, not the innocent one under the pressure of any party/group.

This is totally unacceptable. Gurpura, Addur, surathkal, katipalla, yedapadav, farangipet, etc. are the main centers of cow traffickers. People should march to MLA/Minister offices and demand to produce the culprots and their masters in full public display.

This cannot go on. These cows of various colors n age have been picked up from grazing areas for sure. The vehicle carrying these defenseless creatures doesnt have a number plate.

Can some responsible authorities take courage n burst out this racket of cow thieves once for all.... for the good of society ? Cow feeds everyone in various forms irrespective of belief systems. India which is a soft state must deal with this kind of menace seriously. Dont do this stealing please. If u dont eat beef for one day you wont die. Plz understand. Political patronages must be stopped in this issue.

Many communities take care of cows very well at their home. They make a living out of it. Along west-coast belt, it is the hindu n christian n backward communities that have huts for cows n produce milk, organic manure etc. But the meat business n slaughter centers traditionally are run by muslim community. If cow is economically beneficial to hindu/christian communities, they wont sell their cows for meat purpose. Meat is the last use of cows that comes to people in this business. When the supply of cows has been stopped from families owning cows, these thieves look for cows in grazing areas, and in many cases flick from huts too ( Dog wont bark !!). It is also true that many chrsitians and majority muslims eat beef. When demand is more, and also profit is more, cow trafficking is the only way left for procuring cows. Whether cows exist or not, people want beef. This is totally unacceptable. If families sell their cows for meat, then let these people take. But not by force n cheating.
