Karkala, Jun 6: The 8th District Kannada Sahitya Sammelana 2013 was held at Sri Anantha Padmanabha Sanity auditorium Hebri on Thursday June 6.

The function was inaugurated by Pundalik Halambi, president, Rashtra Kannada Sahitya Parishat. In his inaugural speech, he said that not just the government but everyone has the responsibility to adopt Kannada language in day-to-day life in such a way that it becomes part of life and not an option.

“Parents think only about the future of their children. They cannot be blamed because they think only English can earn them livelihood and not Kannada. This trend should change. Parents don’t have a problem with the language but they need a bright future for their children,” he said.

“In order to gain importance in society, we need to implement the Dr Sarojini Mahishi Report. But it did not get recognition and the project has been thrown away,” added Halambi.

He added that 50 percent reservation or concession should be given in the CET exam to Kannada medium students. “Congress, in their manifesto, mentioned that they would preserve Kannada language if they came to power and now they are in power. So let us hope they do what they promised,” said Halambi.

He further said, “Kannada Sahitya Parishat was formed 99 years ago and in its long journey, it has worked hard and well for cultural development to make the language strong and powerful.”

Ambathanaya Mudhradi, convention president, was the chief guest. He said that Udupi is a cultural city. “English is overpowering Kannada. Kannada should be preserved. Conventions and meetings to give importance to
Kannada are not enough. What is needed is implementing it in our life,” he added.

“Around 3,000 acres of land has been wasted being unusable in the district. There is no proper waste management system either. At least 8 schools in the district are running English medium institutions in the name of Kannada medium and this should be stopped at the earliest,” he added.

Gopal Bhandari, former MLA, Thingale Vikramarguna Hegde, Neelavara Surendra Adiga, Nadogi Ramesh Rao, Harikrishna Punaruru, Dharmadarshi, A S Chanappa, Junjanna, information department officer, Upendra, president, Kundapur Taluk, Narayan, Ravishankar Karkala, Vittal Shetty, Subramanya Bhat , D K Pradeep, and Subramanya Basrur were present on the occasion

We people from undivided south canara being non kannadigas always boost our love and respect for "kannada" language ...but in real on the other way we get very less support from kannadigas for our tulu or Konkani or beary languages. I wont think any kannadiga will have same love to tulu or Konkani or bearybashe. This is Tulunad then why don't you use local language, language born from the same soil "Pundalik Halambi"?.

I dont understand the policy of this Kannada Sahitya Sammelana. Spending crores of money on this is really waste. People come just to have food as its given for free. All these people who are in the dias, dont follow strict kannada in their life. Just for the purpose to sit in stage they take this post. DK Kasapa president's children goes to cbse school and he is one of the prez of famous eng medium school. In media they say big words in Kannada.
