Kundapur: Gangolli Ratha Beedi school - Children, teachers have tough time

Kundapur, Jun 5: At a time when children are happy attending schools after summer vacation with fresh clothes and new friends, the students of the school at car street (Ratha Beedi) Gangolli shudder at the thought of attending their classes. They are not afraid of the teachers or the lessons, but the terrible stench and filthy environment at the school that have turned schooling into a nauseating experience for them.

The Ratha Beedi government lower primary school at Gangolli in the taluk is located by the side of the local fish market. The effluent from the fish market gushes into the school compound, and the students have an aversion towards the bad odour of decomposed fish spread around the school, which stays in their nostrils much after they leave school.

There is a tube well in front of the school, but as the tap there has rusted, the school people have to struggle to get even drinking water. The fact that only three small rooms are available at the school to accommodate first to fifth standard students besides making room for teachers room and space for ‘Nalikali’ programme, have complicated the matter. The parents of the school children are worried at the discomfiture of their small ones, who do not get even basic facilities at this school.

The vendors at the fish market are contributing to the mess by using the space at the back of this school for relieving themselves. The drunkards have found the backside of the school a convenient space for tossing the empty liquor bottles at night, and students can be seen curiously looking at these bottles and trying to get more knowledge about them.

The children of this school do not have a good ground to play. Although the school is located very near to the road, it lacks proper compound wall, posing the lives of the small children to increased risk.

Although you are outside India, you are a Kundapurian and very near to the place where the school is situated. You may be having relatives\friends and may even know Mr. Halady who can be contacted to do the necessary to uplift the surroundings of that Govt. school.
    Try your best.

Mr. Simple ... Thank you very much for your simple suggestion...For you it seems very simple to say so. In any case I have already made my attempt to do the awakening job. I am glad that it touched your conscious too. I hope it touches someone in Gangolli also.

Things that are possible for the concerned people to do must be done by them, as every one knows from childhood how to clean his bump.

Well written. Society has a responsibility towards upkeeping of local schools and other public utility services in the common interest. Contrary to the common belief, people have a tendency to throw anything that is rubbish, outside his/her compound. This habit/belief (anything that is outside our compound is not belong to me/us) is deep-rooted in people possibly due to years of colonial rule but it is high time that we mend our ways and take responsibility for our surroundings.

What does the Grama Panchayat do? It is the responsibility of the local governing body to deal with such menace. Also, if the people of that place and the parents of those children are united and raise their voice, some solution could be found. At least they should take this initiative rather than just ignoring such unhygienic condition. I am sure they must be keeping their house clean, then why not the surroundings of the school when their own children are suffering.

When I was in school, every day there used to be one period for each class for upkeeping of the school and its surroundings, i.e. constructing the mud compound wall, watering the plants, growing vegetables, maintaining the playground, cleaning the surroundings etc.,
But, now a days these habits are not taught to our children. Parents themselves are dead against giving such duties to their children. Then, how can we expect our future generation to lead a value based life? That is what is happening now a days... nobody bothers...hence the jungle raj everywhere.

It should be 'Ratha Beedhi'with a 'H', but it does not matter because the authorities concerned here may be simply smoking 'beedi's' and doing nothing else by the look of things!
