Doha: Community leaders surprised over allegations on Mangalorean entrepreneur

Daijiworld Media Network - Doha

Doha, Feb 17: Following allegations at a recent press conference in Mangalore by the family of Conrad D'Souza, who met with an accident in Doha in November 2011, prominent community leaders and representatives of Karnataka-based organization in Doha visited Conrad D'Souza at his accomodation to find out if the allegations made by the family back home were valid.

Conrad's mother had blamed Space Trading's Gerald D'Mello for the delay in sending Conrad back to India, while the company had revealed the reasons behind the delay by releasing the necessary documents to the media.

Gerald being an entrepreneur of repute and community leader in Doha, leading organizations and its leaders decided to visit Conrad to find out the details.

On Tuesday February 12 evening, about 20 leaders and representatives visited Conrad's accomodation and expressed satisfaction over handling of the case, and surprise over the way his family back home made the allegations without knowing the facts.

The following community leaders, association presidents, representatives and community leaders joined the team:

S Mannangi, president of Karnataka Sangha Qatar
Ahmed Saeed Assadi, president, Karnataka Muslim Cultural Association (KMCA)
Seetharam Shetty, president, Tulu Koota Qatar
Divakar Poojary, president, Qatar Billawas
Abdulla Mono, past president, South Kanara Muslim Welfare Association (SKMWA)
Sunil D'Silva, president, Mangalore Cricket Club (MCC)
Past president, South Kanara Muslim Welfare Association (SKMWA)
Prakashchandra Ajila, vice-president, Bunts Qatar
M Iqbal Manna, social activist
Ashmath Ali, vice-president, Tulu Koota Qatar
Richard D'Souza, past president, MCC
Deepak Shetty, general secretary Karnataka Sangha Qatar
Prakash Noronha, general secretary, MCC
and media representatives

Leaders briefed Conrad on the purpose of the visit and the intention of the visiting organizations to help him in whatever way possible, should the company he is working for is not fulfiling its obligations. Each of the visitor enquired on the well being of Conrad.

Conrad was briefed on the procedures and laws of the land and his own responsibilities in resolving the issue.  He was also informed that since he is refusing to sign any papers that require his acceptance and signature, no action could be taken by anyone including the authorities. Conrad was informed that the Government hospital, which is one of the best in the region has a norm to invite visiting specialist doctors to treat special cases like that of Conrad, and the time frame cannot be ascertained. People here consider it a privilege to get this kind of treatment as it comes free. However, if Conrad wants to leave for India, then he has to indemnify his employer and the authorities here of their obligation to treat him in Qatar, they said.

Conrad has been provided a spacious, air conditioned, furnished and well-kept accommodation.

Conrad acknowledged before the leaders that the company has taken good care of him all along by providing dedicated people to look after him. The company has provided a television for his passtime, half his salary every month, medicines, transportation etc. His roommates have even taken extra care to involve him in all activities and leisure.

It was revealed that during December 2012, he felt he did not want to stay in Doha anymore waiting for a specialist doctor from abroad for the operation. He emphasized that he wants insurance money and treatment in India arranged by Gerald. He was also firm on not signing any papers for any reasons as he has been asked not to do so by his family back home.

Moreover, the leaders made him understand that without him signing the required documents the law would not permit him to travel.

The company staff who were present were asked for clarifications on the complaints by Conrad, for which they informed that until the end of December 2012, Conrad was happy and thankful to the company for all the assistance he had been provided and the personal care he had been given. He had been also thankful to Gerald for bringing him to Qatar free of cost and providing him the job of his choice. They express wonder at the sudden shift in Conrad’s attitude.

The members of the delegation found that Conrad was not consistent in his answers. He has not conveyed the truth to the public and he may have been misguided, they said. However, they all wished him speedy recovery and a bright future.

"It is sad that people make allegations without knowing the truth. Conrad is not alone here, he has been well supported by the company and the representatives of various organisations are with him. They are aware of his health condition," said one of the leaders to daijiworld representative.

"What surprised us was the fact that his family back home is demanding Rs 30 lac as compensation to sign the papers, and insisting that only after arranging that money he should be sent back," the delegation said.

When daijiworld contacted the company, the manager said that for the past one month the company has been trying every resource to send him back. The company is in constant touch with the embassy, and as soon as the formalities are over, the boy will be sent back according to the law and advise of the embassy.

It is indeed heartening that such a hugh no of Entreprenuers in the Mangalorean Community. We were hoping to see the picture of Conrad here finally smiling and giving assurance to the public that all is well with him. Hope each of the good hearted Entreprenuers have pledged a few lakhs each to help Conrad to deal with his permananent disability. Let this be your goal for 2013 to help one needy member of the community rather than making multiple contributions. Action speaks louder than words.

Gerald is a good person who as per Conrad helped him to go abroad free os cost. The company has looked after him well too. So why this guy has made an issue? It simply implies that they must be greedy. However, dont want to come to any conclusions, but greediness doesnt last long.
I sincerely appreciate whatever Gerald has done knowing for the fact that so many peoiple wouldnt go to meet Conrad, if Gerald didnt have a good reputation. So good job Gerald, keep up the good work, God keeps people like you very close to his heart. Dont give up on other needy people who need your help, because of this incident

Keep visiting people who are undergoing similar situations in Qatar and bring justice to these individuals from their employer/employees.. The good work must continue and people in such numbers make a difference.. The true stories could be then brought to Indian mission attention and justice could be drawn.. I would not mind joining if this is the motive behind the visit.

Indian Missions at overseas to take care of visiting VVIP"S, VIP's and politicians. Not interested with NRI (Not required Indians). Till date the Indian mission is well aware of the issue and should have issued official clear & true statement so to close the subject.

Very grateful family, the greed in human being's are so much that they want every thing. What ever received from the Insurance is his right to get, not demanding 30 lakhs etc. One might ask is Conrad worth only that much, Conrad may be worth much more if he had Insured himself handsomely. Giving a job free of cost is a great thing he must be grateful to Mr. Gerald. May be conrad thinks because of Mr. Gerald's good deed he met with a accident.God help these people

The problem with most of the people come to Gulf countries, without having the proper knowledge of the local rules and regulations. Am sure Conrad is one among them. Mr Gerald D'Mello has shown such a compassionate heart, that Conrad and his family should have been grateful to him. Instead their approach was very dishearting. It seems that someone is misguiding the family of Conrad. Please do not get carried away by this but accept whatever comes on the way. Mr Gerald D'Mello is a great person. He will certainly look after you. Send your apologies to him immediately.

Both sides need to be heard well .In many cases the Employer doesn't take much care about the Employee when he meets with an accident while on the job .And there are cases in which Employee try to extract maximum Compensation from the Employer for even a Trivial damage .A Balanced workmen s compensation should be arrived at both with respect to the Treatment of the Case and Compensation .Cases like these cannot be judged superficially .I remember one case in which one of my Patient got injured while working in a Rig in west Africa .He had sustained a Brain Injury I got a phone call at night .The Patient was given a Chance either to Fly to Mumbai and get treatment or get treatment at nearby hospital .I Advised to go to a South African Private hospital in Johannesburg and the Patient was operated and he is doing extremely well now and is back to the same company with promotion in the Job . with all these people involved I think a good treatment offer was given to Mr Conrad

Being a very close associate, good friend of Jerald D Mello and a well wisher of Space Trading and all his employees, it is very disturbing to read this article. As I was away on tour I could not put it across whatever the facts I know about this case. I know this case since the first day of the accident which was really unfortunate. Jerald being such a wonderful human being, philanthropist and an excellent community supporter, I am fully aware of how nicely he takes care of his employees .Jerald has come up hard way and with out the dedication of the employees it is difficult to be a successful business man which he is. Employees will be dedicated only if you take care of them well.

There is absolutely no reason why he will neglect the treatment of Conrad. Before publishing and tarnishing the image of any individual or company it would have been worthwhile to investigate the case through so many ways especially in this internet era. Understand every father and mother are concerned about the well being of their children. Same way there are lot of employees like Jerald too take care of their employees like their own family members. Conrad will not be different. I am sure in spite of the heavy mental strain and damage caused on the reputation, Jerald will do his best to take care of Conrad . Being a community leader I too will extend whatever support is required to Conrad for his early exit from Qatar. Media can make or break the society. In this case I highly appreciate Daijiworld for the thorough research of the event prier to publishing it which has given the true picture to all the readers.
