Udupi, Feb 10: The skeletal remains of a fisherman who had gone missing about three months ago was found in a field here on Sunday February 10.

Muhammed alias Dada Muhammed (65) had gone missing all of a sudden on the day of Diwali festival in 2012. He had a trawl boat operating at Hejamadi-Kodi. Search operations had been conducted in the surrounding areas, but he was not found.

Thereafter, police took several persons into questioning, but no clue was obtained. The case thus created much curiosity among the locals. It was suspected that he might have been kidnapped and murdered, and several organizations had requested the home minister to look into the matter.

However, on Sunday, when Muhammed's skeletal remains were found in a field, it was surmised on initial investigation that he had been electrocuted by a broken wire.

The snapped electric wire was found below the dead body, which led to this speculation. The locals claimed that electricity was still running in the wire.

It is suspected that as the tide is high on new moon day, on which Diwali falls, Muhammed may have gone to shut out the water from flowing into the fields.

Muhammed's adopted daughter identified the body based on the clothes.

Padubidri police have registered a case. The cause of death can be determined only after report by the forensic team, which arrived from Manipal.

Appeal for action against Mescom: The locals alleged that Mescom had left a snapped electric wire unattended for three months. District JD(S) working president Ghulam Mohammed who visited the spot urged the authorities to take strict action against Mescom.
