Mangalore: Shameful - University Professor Caught Red-handed by Lokayukta

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (VM)

Mangalore, Dec 5: We have come across a number of cases where politicians and government officials have been caught by the Lokayukta accepting or demanding bribes. With the anti-corruption mantra sweeping across the country, one would expect conscientious citizens, whose voice has been quite vociferous in the anti-corruption movement, to set an example.

Of all the people, when a teacher, considered a noble citizen who moulds the society indulges in corruption, it is indeed shameful for the entire teaching profession. In this case, it was no less than a university professor.

Dr Anita Ravishankar, associate professor in sociology at Mangalore University was caught red-handed by Lokayukta police while accepting bribe here on December 4.

She was arrested for accepting bribe of Rs 5,000 from a research student.

As per the information received, Dr Anita Ravishankar had demanded a 'fee' of Rs 5,000 while assigning the research project to her student Prema. The girl at once alerted the Lokayukta.

Lokayukta police asked Prema to make use of a recorder, through which the professor was caught with enough evidence. She has been produced in the sessions court.

Dakshina Kannada Lokayukta SP Mohandas Pai, DYSP Vittaldas Pai, inspector Umesh Shet, Dilip Kumar, officials Sudarshan, Sharath, Bhaskar, Shivaprasad, Salim, Harishchandra, George, Pramod, Madhu and Sudhakar were part of the operation.

Guys Corruption has no face/name/religion/designation/proffession.. Its a disease and needs to be treated at the roots.
I cant understand why media has to sensationalize by throwing in the profession cards. Are you trying to glorify the corruption in other professions?

It is a sad incident. I too studied in the Mangalore university during 1986-88 batch in Economics Dept. Things were not so bad. Even I Knew personally Dr Ravishankar of the English Dept and he was considered to be a fine gentlemen. However, if this happened to his wife, it is disappointing. Beeing a noble profession, I hope that the teacher learns from this and never do the same. Any how, it is a sad thing a for a institution in which I studied and proud of.

NO DOUBT, A PERSON WHOM I MET IN MANGALORE SAID THAT HE CAN MAKE ARRANGEMENT FOR MY MASTERS OR ANY HIGHER DEGREE CERTIFICATE.

When I was in Mangalore for holidays I met a person and was discussing few matters and while talking, I told him that most of the present generation are double MASTERS or Highly Educated in multiple fields and I find it difficult to find a suitable proposal of good girls as most of the girls around are more educated than me and I don't get much time or in need of extra certificate at work. For that he said, he can make arrangement for my Masters degree if I am willing to spend some money and be around in India for some time. But I had no time for this nonsense… I had to come back for work.

Really great achievements done in INDIA…... Corruption at its Best.

Everyone of us need to question ourselves. Have we ever bribed someone to get favors? Probably, one percent of the population of India may come out clean.

I have studied in several educational institutions in Mangalore but never came across such gross miss use of power and exploitation. I was sent out of class for sleeping (a boring economics period)and that is right. But at the same time, I studied only in convent institutions.

Recently, I met a class mate who is settled in North America. When he tried his luck to get into a job, he was asked to re-qualify. Taking the advise, when he tried to enroll to professional studies hoping for exemptions for the degrees he had from Mangalore University, the enrollment office rejected all qualifications and advised the applicant to go through the full course. However a Pakistani managed to get exemptions as the university was an approved university! and that is for a record. Can someone enlighten me where our coveted Mangalore University stands in the outside world?

It is only a tip of the iceberg. A FISH has been caught, and many wild THIMINGILAS are still moving freely in the campus of Mangalagangothri. Recently a Chairman of a PG Department was removed as the Chairman of Ph.D ion committee for similar reasons but no serious action was taken. These few teachers in the University have converted the university a centre of disgrace for the region known for integrity and high ethical standards in educational institutions. In the name of Quality, Mangalore University and majority of its Teaching faculty try to monopolise Ph.D Guideship and till recently PG programmes also. Though there are many well know subject experts with vast research experience in the UG colleges , they are not given the permission to guide Ph.D candidates.. Though there are many others with enough complaints of harassment, The VC of who always speaks high about the university is either acts blind or forced to pretend blind.. Hope this incident wakes up the people of this region and try to weed out these corrupt elements .

The students and the parents both get looted by the school and the teachers during the course of education and the parents have no option but pay so that the student is not targeted. Many private schools all over India are charging anything between a few thousands to a few lakhs of rupees as donation, depending on how reputed both the school and the parents are and the problem persists across aided, matriculation, CBSE and ICSE schools. Other than tuition fees, they charge several other fees like admission form charges, PTA charges, learning aid fees, orientation fees, workshop fees, other fees, postage charges and what not.
The Right to Education Act prohibits both — the practice of schools accepting donations as well as interviewing children during admissions. However, nothing seems to prevent schools from seeking donations during admission time every year. And parents continue to pay till there is strong law to severely punish the faculties and suspend the school license.

    Dear Jude
Somewhere getting carried away by your own explanation, you've forgotten about my grouse 'generalisation'.You seem to have a phobia about your own state which you brand as 'middle class' and go on as a self proclaimed speaker of it's whims and fancies. There in lies your folly.Your assumption of 'middle class' for starters or at the outset is at fault, the same way
as our Planning Commission experts some time back came to a conclusion(!?) that earning Rs32 per day was enough to be APL.(above poverty line).Sitting in Dubai and making calculations helps u dream about n number of cars-the Skodas, BMW's etc, where as the ground reality here is very different, be it of an average middle class or middle class. Then there is this 'disguised middle and rich 'class to contend with, which is another matter altogether. It seems that you have taken a liking for 'us the mango people'a phrase used by someone whose riches rose multifold just because of the company he kept in the name of relations.According to you then he was a 'mango man'who realised his dreams 'hook or by crook' .Why mix his phrase or bring in the IAC to deride the state you find yourself in (according to your own explanation )is beyond me! Yep -carrying mangoes on a walk ain't going to help eihter- There is as you have suggested - a need for a strong drink (together -when you come over) and discussion with no hard feelings whatsoever...! Bye and now -enough of mangoes!Take care of the original-that''s enough-Cheerio

Yep. R. Bhandarkar, I go for walks and I carry ripe mangoes with me, to remind me regularly that I am just a mango man wanting everything and everyone to change to suit my whims and fancies, to make my life easier and convenient, but at the same time refusing to change myself and my behaviour, my habits, my corruption and then ride piggy back on Kejriwal and Hazare to criticize the government politicans, public servants, large companies, businessmen and the whole world. It seems like I need a drink more than a walk my friend. Maybe a sozzled head will at least help hide the reality. The truth however is that we the middle class ( mango people) are the real curse, in spite of having everything we look at ourselves as victims of conspiracies, never satisfied with what we have. Ten years ago we had scooter, 6 years ago we could afford a car, now we have 3 cars and yet we cry when petrol prices and food prices rise, but we never complained or appreciated when our salaries rose 10 fold. We cursed our government then when we could only buy those Ambassadors and Padmini's, but now we can own Skodas, Hyundai's, Nissans or even BMW's. We had to do with those black & white EC or Dyanora TV sets, but today we can buy the Sony's and the LG's. Yet we still cry. Air travel, foreign travel seemed to be beyond us in this life time, to day many of us fly every day, yet we still cry. I can go on and on. Is this not a joke really. The porr do not havetime to cry as they have to worry about their daily bread, The rich do not care..........It is only us mango people with money and time at our disposal, do we find faltu free time to curse and complain for everything good that has happened to us over the last 20 years.

The amount of bribe itself shows how cheap this Professor is? In fact our Teachers and Professor became role model in our life for teaching us “No Bribe Principle” but we feel bad when these kinds of Teachers or Professors takes bribe from Students. Yes all Teachers or Professors are not same but one such fellow is enough to put one small black point on Teaching Profession. Can we make at least our region as “Bribe less Districts”? Yes we can and it is possible only when we oppose strongly and openly the bribe culture

It is very easy to condemn, blame others as it will not cost us any thing nor it will not pain us.

A professor earning approx 70,000 pm as salary, why she will ask for Rs. 5,000 from a student, which leads to many doubts. Is this professor has been trapped or used to settle some scores internally.

It is easy to spoil somebody's name.

Careful investigation is required in order to find out the real truth in this case.

    Dear Jude
Dude-You need to go for morning walks regularly to clear some clogs-What are you writing? What are you 'mixing'? You against IAC o.k., but how can you broadly generalise and say 'mango people' ?Don't you feel ashamed even to make a reference to it? Yep-pls go for a walk....

    Not to worry Mr.R. Bhandarkar,

we will have a newly devised course in corruption... B.C.= bachelor in corruption and M.C = Master of Corruption and obviously we will have a department of corruption in the Universities with all the qualified faculty members... I swear there wont be a dearth of distinguished visiting professors from the political arena...

I am 100% sure that Prof. Anita Ravishankar is also and ardent follower of Kejriwal. It is common people like her ( mango people) who want to get rid of corruption and yet at the same time indulge in corruption themselves who are active members of IAC.When we come across a large Queue we feel lazy to stand in that line like everyone else. We look for the office peon and pay him to take our papers across, bypassing the queue to get things done quickly, when everyone else is patiently waiting for his/her turn. This is only one example. We can find several in our daily lives and that includes you and me. Then we go and participate in an IAC agitation. This is our true colour. We the mango people.

    The caption:
Shameful- University Professor can well be written as
    Shameless University Professor...
In fact I have my PU Marks Card too signed by a Registrar, the top ranked official, who was later suspended on charges of corruption! So much for our education and it's certification! The exploits of the recent Hanumantappa or somebody -VC are still fresh in our minds! Wonder where this world of 'education' is leading us to...
