Bangalore: Kannada Activists Attack Konkani Catholics over Language Issue

Edwin D'Souza

Bangalore, Nov 19: Konkani Catholics from around Rajajinagar were on Sunday November 18 attacked by a group of about 25 Kannada activists at Saccidananda Chapel over the use of Konkani during church service.

The parish churches in Bangalore being too small to accommodate the large number of Catholics, and as they do not have Sunday services in English or Konkani, some of the Konkanies from around Rajajinagar and Yeshwantpur frequent Saccidananda and Sabbhavana chapels of the Capuchin and Carmelite Fathers respectively. There have been constant threats from some Kannada activists to stop all services in languages other than Kannada. Recently even a group of Kannada priests had barged into the premises threatened the friars with dire consequences. Over the last couple of weeks, protests from Kannada activists have intensified.

On Sunday when the faithful came out of the Saccidananda Chapel, they faced the wrath of about 25 Kannada activists; fully drunk, using abusive language attacked the faithful. The Konkani Catholics totally taken by surprise, put up a tough resistance. In the scuffle that lasted over an hour, two Konkani leaders and a young boy were physically assaulted. The Kannada activists were shouting slogans, “Konkanies go to Goa! There is no place for you in Karnataka.”

In a short while, the police arrived at the scene and dispersed the crowd. The wounded Konkanis after obtaining first aid at the local hospital lodged a police complaint at the Subrahmanyanagar police station. The local police inspector Somegowda after conducting preliminary inquiry gave assurance that such incidents will not be repeated. FIR has been filed against the activists.

According to a local leader, “The pontifical commission that visited Bangalore has given its opinion that while safeguarding the primacy of Kannada, they are in favour of masses in all languages, namely, Tamil, Konkani, Malayalam, Hindi, etc. That is the reason why, the Kannada activists are agitated. They want to stop Archbishop Dr Bernard Moras from implementing this order.”

Now the Konkani Associations are alerted, the Konkani Federation has reiterated its stand for Konkani language. Other language groups, such as Tamil, Malayalam and some moderate Kannadigas have promised strong support.

Konkani leader Edwin D’Souza stated, “There are over three lac Konkanis in the Archdiocese but how come we do not have even a single mass in Konkani?” as the state government has recognized Konkani as one of the state language and formed Konkani Sahithya Academy and also introduced Konkani as third langue in some of the schools. Richard said, ”Our fight will not stop until Konkani is duly recognized in the Archdiocese of Bangalore. Dolfy said, “Till now we have been silent, now on we will continue our agitation, until we reach the goal.”

"The question of one's faith and ability to pray peacefully to GOD" God is Omnipotent and His presence is everywhere. When we search our heart we wil find Him. Prayer is such a thing which does not need any place, it could be said anywhere anytime anyhow. Church as one thinks is not a place where people really go to pray in earnestness. Most often it is to show off their new jewellery set, new Kanchivaram or Mysore silkjari saari or their new vehicle purchased. Let's be honest and confess whether all seriously go to pray... My home is the best place where I can pray that too in the privacy of my kitchen toilet bedroom living room. All I haveto do is sit in silence invoke God's presence and pray and this has worked wonders in my life and God has favoured me in many ways. Let's not fight over a place which belongs to none...

I Subibe to the veiws of Mr. Prabhudas.
I am referring to langauage of worship in churches. Incident is outlet of subjagated emotions arising out of denial of self expression to the downtrodden. Because earlier Bishop of Mangalore Late Dr. Basil D'Souza introduced Konakani as language of worship of Mangalore Diocease faithfuls have been able to involve themselves in prayer. All worship, prayer, functions, hymns are in Konakani which has enabled all to channelise their talent in praise of god. It will be hegemony if believers whose mother toungue is Kannada are made orphans in their own land. Konakanis better understand this.

God only knows one language The language of love. Language is meant for communication between human. No country in the world forces to speak a particular language. you have freedom to speak in your mother tounge in any part of the world. Nobody can enforce particular language in worship place. It is unconstitutional and violation of human rights. KONKANI IS ALSO A PART OF KANNADA CULTURE AS IT IS SPOKEN AS MOTHER TOUNGUE IN MANGLORE WHICH IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF KARNATAKA.

When in Rome, be a Roman as the saying goes,I think one has to respect the sentiments of the localites. However, every language has to be respected. Especially in Churches services in every language hs to be welcomed but, at the same time priority should be given to the local language. Just becaue of any majority one cannot demand for the rights. I would like to know for curiosity sake, if service is held in Kannada language in Mangalore, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, etc.? Like Tamil, Malayalam and English services Konkani also could be implemented for convenience sake but not with a demand and as a right. Karnataka is a land of Kannadigas. If it is tolerating other languages, let us not make it one's birth right to disturb the sentiments of the people. Let not language be a barrier in the name of religion to bring disharmony among the people of Karnataka. Let us learn to live in peace and be united in brotherhood.

In Bangalore nearly three lakhs konkani people are staying.Just to give the statistics of kannadigas in bangalore for example in Nativity church of vidyaranyapura hardly one dozen kannadigas where as more than ten dozen approxmately 120 houses belongs to konkani people.
No doubt bangalore is in karnataka state.Priority of kannada exists in church because of state language.kannada is surviving in church because of konkani people.Konkani man knows kannada fluently.More than ninty percent konkani people studied in primary and highschool in kannada medium.Konkani people has a right to say the prayer in konkani.Majority of the people use kannada script for writing konkani.Bible is written in kannada. People are going to church just to pray and get solace to heart.God knows all langauges. Our country has many langauges. Our constitution says unity in divrsity. If you think in that direction it is good for all of us.

The argument is that in karnataka it should be in kannada, my question is that catholics from tamil and kerala are they not in karnataka? And why these so called kannadigas are not attacking their churches and only for Konkani? there is no logic in this. at the same no bishop can go against the vatican II decree which says the mass should be said in the langauage of the faithful. Hence the bishops should take a strong stand without any fear and come what may to introduce here and now konkani massess in all the dioceses and do justice to the vatican council II. So be strong and have courage and stand for the values. May God inspire our spiritual leaders. Pass a decree on konkani Mass.We pray.

Time to unitedly take a stand to respect all and coexist in harmony. What do drunk people know about religious service and prayers anyway! "Tu usse na dar jo kudha se nahi dartha hai..Tu usse dar jo kudha se dartha hai".

I am sure most of the literate and intellectual class from any language other groups will not vouch for such hooliganism by few misguided elements. It is a pity that the fundamentalist forces ruling this State are working behind the scenes in augmenting this trouble. They are just using those few to create a divide among the community and watch the fun.

Preaching and practicing religion being fundamental right of every citizen of our beloved nation, these hooligans will not go a long way in forcing any language or their culture on others.

The contribution of Konkani speaking people in community development is huge and recognized by all. They are more patriotic than these hooligans, which fact is proved through their patience and perseverance without giving room for provocation.

It is time the Konkani tribe unite and ensure their fundamental rights of practice of liturgy in their own language.

Let us not be bogged down by these threats but stand united.

Let us also pray that the Lord may give wisdom to these fundamentalists so that they may join hands in building a just society where all can live in peace and harmony, with human dignity.

Whenever there are sporadic events of this sort, be calm and know that this is only the tip of the iceberg! The underlying issues, hurts and pains, unresolved problems and attitudes of people who perpetrate violence are much deeper.Religion as Karl Marx says can be "the opium of people".

What is needed in a country anywhere in the world, particulary in the sub continent is peaceful co-existence and pro-existence, communal harmony and a collaborative effort towards development of our people and our national development which can only spring from deep love of and respect for others which is truly love of Christ in action.

Christ is suffering today in the hands of his own so called followers!

We must distinguish followers of Christ as sheep from wolves!

We had several incidents in the past regarding religious or sect related matters. To worsen the situation, people started fighting for language to use to worship GOD. Now GOD might be thinking that these people gone to extreme point where he himself could do nothing to stop this nonsense. Are we heading on the right direction in the name of religion or faith? Do we want to control the religious fervor with language dose too? Did GOD ever instruct anyone to worship him on particular language only? This is really crazy way of following the religion but unfortunately it’s happening only in India.

How petty minded we can turn out to be? Due to advancement in technology the whole world has become a global village and here we are restricting even the expression of faith in ones own language because we happen to live in a State which has Kannada as a language. Why don't we have the good will and understanding and promote brotherhood which is the crux of any religion? Will god be more pleased if all in Karnataka worshiped Him only in Kannada? Won't God be pleased if we all live and love as brothers and sisters children of the same Father - God and worship Him from the language of the heart which is love expressed in ones own language because one feels comfortable and understands what one expresses? God help us to be broad minded and large hearted to embrace everyone as you do.

Hindus use Sanskrit all over India for their prayer services and Muslims use Arabic. It is high time, Christians use the Latin language to avoid these problems. This will solve all the problems. Latin was used earlier and there were absolutely no problems at that time and people were more pious and devoted.

There is a huge Mangalore Konkani Catholic population residing in Bangalore. So the Church must adjust and have a Konkani mass for it followers. What's wrong ?

In Mangalore,Milagres Church had a malyalam service till about 10 years ago for the Kerala population.Only after the Malyali Church came up at Kankanady did Milagres Church stopped the service because the crowd dwindled.

Ultimately, its a matter of adjustment / compromise by both - Church and the followers, although God is everywhere. We can pray even in a dense forest sitting under a tree !

Government of India Must give our future backbone of Indians the young generation the teaching through educational books to respect all the religions, languages etc.,Sad thing in this incident is that language is dominated rather than religion. Very much shamefull thing is that some of our Kannada speaking priests who are the religious teachers are also joined with such language penatics. When we worship we want to express ourselves in a language we understand. We want to say things from our heart to the Lord. Not mouth some words that we do not understand, in a language we do not even know and say we are praying. Imagine if you were to ask someone for something and had to consult third party as to what to say to ask for it and you can never be sure whether that third party has told you the real thing or not. Suppose you ask for bread and get a slap because you don't know the language. At least while praying we have to say the things we want to say in the language that we understand.

Conduct prayers and mass services in whichever language a person comprehends.

So as to offer her prayers, wish and will through the core of their hearts to the Almighty God.

Konkani speaking Catholics have the right to attend Holy Mass and the mass should be held in Konkani. Especially the language one belongs is important to express faith and convictions.
There should be dialogue and peace among religions. Religion guide the faithful and expression of religion in the own language must be protected by all means peacefully and legally.

I strongly condemn the attack on konkani faithfuls during the prayer service.Prayers never reach god on the language basis.Christians attacking christians on lanuage basis is really a shame.I dnt understand how can those activists ask mangloreans(kannadigas) to go to goa just because mother toungue is konkani!!!!The way kannada christians demonstrated their anger is not at all acceptable. However, the motivation behind kannadigas asking prayers to be recited in kannada is absolutely right. This is karnataka and kannada is the major language here.Let the things go just like that, one day everything in karnataka would be in malayalam, tamil, hindi and English. This is the reason why christianity has failed to reach kannada speaking people.I do agree that its everyones democratic right to use thier convinient lanuages. But,it shoudnt be at the cost of kannada. Why this things happen only in karnataka???Would tamilians allow this in tamil nadu?Would malayalis tolarate such things in kerala? Then why kannada is attacked in karnataka? If everyone prays or sing in kannada, would God not listen to you.If yes, then why do you people hesitate to pray in kannada, and sing in kannada? Occassionally use of other language is acceptable. But in karnataka, kannada should be given the top priority.Malayalis, tamilians, telugaits, north indians woudnt be so bad in learning kannada and implementing in their lives as long as they live in karnataka.People coming here need everything of karnataka but why not kannada????????
KONKANI IS ALSO A PART OF KANNADA CULTURE AS IT IS SPOKEN AS MOTHER TOUNGUE IN MANGLORE WHICH IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF KARNATAKA.Tamilians and malayalis supporting konkanis in Banglore is just a drama for their selfish motives.Lets kannadigas,And konkanis should understand the fact or else one day Tamilians&malayalis might ask to add thier langues as offcial languages in karnataka.
