Sharjah, Nov 18 : The pride of Mangalore, London Olympion in high jump Sahana Kumari will be inaugurating 'Mayura Cup Sports Day' organised by Karnataka Sangha Sharjah on November 23.

Sahana Kumari has won several state, national and international high jump medals for her performances right from school days.

Sahana Kumari had been selected for London Olympics in the high jump event, where, in the qualifying round, she scaled a new height of 1.92 metres.

Born and brought up in Ullal, she completed her early education from Anandashram School, Ullal and later joined Sri Gokarnanatheshwara College, which proved to be the right choice to pursue her sporting dreams. Sri Gokarnanatha College has been the home for many a young, dynamic and successful athlete. Her brother and her elder sister are also successful sportspersons. Her sister, like Sahana, is a high jump athlete and her brother is a volleyball player.

Sahana is now married and settled in Bangalore. Her husband, Nagaraj, is also an athlete. They have a daughter, Pavana (4).

Sahana got into sports nearly 18 years ago. She credits her sucess to her parents, husband, coaches and family members who have always wholeheartedly supported and encouraged her.

The prestigious ‘Mayura Cup’ Competition 2012 will be held on the lush green lawns of the Wanderers’ Club, in Sharjah. The UAE-level competition will include volleyball for men, throwball for women, tug-of-war, kabaddi for men and so on.  The ever popular tug-of-war attracts some of the best professional teams from across the Emirates and some class action is guaranteed at the Wanderers’ Club, Sharjah.

The competition is expected to be flagged off at around 8 am on Friday November 23 under the able leadership of Satish Poojary, president of Karnataka Sangha, Sharjah and his team of dedicated and committed group in the executive committee.

In the recent past, there has been a burst of activities in the sports and athletic arena organized by the various regional, state-level and inter-community level competitions which have attracted some of the best talents from our country and such competitions have given ample opportunities to the enterprising athletes/sports persons to show case their trade mark capabilities on the field of athletics and group competitions.

There are a few extremely solid performers who rarely get an opportunity to participate in activities in which they excel. So, here’s an opportunity for all those athletes to come forward and rekindle their love for games and sports here in the Emirates.  It’s a treat to see even some of the conservative girls and ladies showing off their athletic skills on the turf.  It’s indeed a pleasure to witness such prodigious talent which would have gone waste had it not been for community associations like the Sharjah Karnataka Sangha who have made it their moral duty to adopt innovative ways of attracting common people to come out of their ‘comfort-zones’ and participate in these highly effective and successful sporting activities.

The chief secretary Raju Bhandary of the Karnataka Sangha, Sharjah along with his counterpart in the sports department, Nityanand, the sports secretary accompanied by the ever supportive executive committee and the president of the Sangha, have given a clarion call to all sports enthusiasts from Karnataka state residing in the United Arab Emirates to come forward in large numbers and make this event a grand success.

Its ridiculous that such a large number of people are criticizing the holding of such tournaments like Throw Ball and Volley Ball again - even if the spectators don't enjoy I urge all the participants to go ahead and take part in good numbers because, I would like to tell all those critics to go out and play in the open Sun for half an hour on a week end and see for your self how your adrenaline pumps up and gives your body such a light and flexi feeling, that you won't criticize any number of such events come week after week! Are you bored of cricket that keeps happening these days even during rainy season??? So, why blame the authorities for observing such games? Let it happen every week during this salubrious weather for come April, you won't venture out with any activity, don't you??? So much for couch potatoes and arm-chair critics... Welcome Sahana, hope you have a pleasant stay in UAE...

Mr.shivananad,Mr jerry and mr jacob i am requesting you, pls sit at home and watch big boss it is more interesting with gossips. To make the throwball game more interesting may I suggest to all throwball tournament organizers to adopt a 14 or 15 points throwball points for the games instead of having tennis points system. In the interest of the entertaining /good game I request more review comments on this suggestion from the organizers & members of the participating teams.

    Dear sir,
I agree with Ronald Pinto and Shivanand. Just 2-3 trournamanet per season is quite enough. Now Throwball / volleyball has become outfashioned, people are losing interest. Instead, please organise picnic kind of events (Like Paradela, Mangalore konkans organising)...every one can enjoy. In this only players are enjoying and others are wasting time. Hope next year Karnataka Sangha will organise something different

My sincere request with sports organisors of UAE, kindly try to introduce new sports / games. Throwball and volleyball have become boring games these days after every Friday sam story ! I think, only players are thier family are participating in such events, we cannot see outside crowd. No entertainment. I am sure in the coming years organisors will make a note of this and organise different types of games

Appreciate organizing a nice event for Kannadigas. A small suggestion to the organizers to conduct children sports in the afternoon session as most of the children are busy in the morning with the sunday schools, tuition and other scheduled activities.
