Mangalore, Sep 28:
Phew! With Airbus A-310, a Portugal made aircraft landing on the runway of Mangalore Airport on Friday September 28 at 8.58 am, the airport witnessed a momentous day.

The Airbus, made by the Portugal company White Airways looked grand with its creamy white body shimmering against the morning rays. With this, Mangalore Airport added another feather to its cap, besides allaying fears of safety.

Dais Gomes, commander of the crew of aircraft expressed his contentment and satisfaction on landing at the Mangalore airport, said an airport official. Gomes himself was not available for comment.

The Airbus A-310 weighing 1.40 lac kilo grams has a cargo compartment to which the baggage can be loaded mechanically. There are machines to elevate the baggage and load into the cargo room. The aircraft has a 24-ton capacity and is able to accommodate 186 passengers.

Mangalore Airport director M R Vasudeva said that the maiden landing of Airbus A-310 is a factor which could drive away the wrong notion Mangalore Airport was not safe.

"Today is a momentous day for Mangalore Airport," he proclaimed.

The same aircraft will fly for five consecutive days from Thursday to ferry Hajj pilgrims, before going back to Portugal, he said. As this aircraft provides cargo facilities pilgrims need not depend on cargo planes to carry home cans of 'zam zam' holy water. Each person can bring about five liters of zam zam water on their arrival on November 5.

I am glad to see Lower Deck Loader (LDL) in Mangalore Airport soon they should have Main deck loaders (MDL) and full fledged cargo operation.
George, this aircraft can carry 18 utive and 204 economy class passengers. As you have rightly stated, probably to take more fuel they would have taken less passengers. This aircraft also has 10 m3 cargo hold to carry passenger cargo and baggage. Max range is 9000 KM.
I feel Janthra near Belman is good location for airport if it is still a barren land.

It’s not question of “Runway, Safety, weight or weather” but it’s the mentality of our Politicians. They wanted to ferry Hajj Pilgrims without any hassle. Very good move by Government, we have to appreciate that at least one such community for special need has been solved. But may I request same Ministry or Politicians that pls hire same Air Crafts during summer season when Gulf NRIs’ are travelling on vacation to Mangalore region. I hope fare will not increase that much when compare to present fare charged in AIE from Gulf region to Mangalore

I totally agree with Mr. George Belman. It is the right time to start for searching a new place for mangalore international airport. The ideal location for this is 'NANDIKOORU'near padubidri, which is nearer to udupi dist, uttarakannda dist., shimoga dist.Kodagu dist and kasaragodu.Shut down Udupi Power Corporation Company and you will find levelled acres of land without any disturbance like mountains, forests etc.without this you will not able to find suitable place for international airport in twin districts.

If we could start a petition not with the canine class useless policticians irrespective of parties. Most of spend our time sitting on PCs , I doubt Mangalore citizen do care much than expatriates , they hav eto worry more about congested roads and no power. So lets start a mail campaign Clog the PM office email and the Civil Aviation minister , Mangalore MP , Mangalore DC , state CM email ids with daily emails requesting upgradation of status, just make sure its over loaded and wont work , Show protest not just submisiveness like a butler of the british era.

The Airbus 310 is not "made by" Portugal as mentioned in the report. It is probably owned by a Portuguese charter airline. Air India too had 310s in its fleet until recently. They must have been retired due to their age and most such planes are now flown by charter airlines or as cargo planes as the 320s 319s and 330s are the new generation planes.

Airbus is manufactures in Toulose - France, not Portugal. Maybe this aircraft is leased from a Portugese Company.

Anyone know more technical details? That is, was there any payload restriction for this operation? Or what kind of payload plane carried?

Also minor error in the report - it should say "Portugal owned" rather than "Portugal made". Airbuses are Made in France with many European parts.

Sorry to sound a negative note but I frankly do not see what this celebration about. Airbus 310 has been in production since 1982 and we are celebrating landing of it in Bajpe 30 years late. World class airports talk about A380, B787, B748 and here we are celebrating arrival of an ancient relic to Bajpe.

I have said before and will say again - when it comes to expansion it is time to explore new airport area. No point pouring money to Bajpe when there is no land available for expansion.

I am fully aware that for all of us expats Bajpe has a special place in our heart but that should not blind us from exploring new.
